One of my favorite softball moments in the simpsons is when Lisa says: “dad hit a home run 5 minutes ago and he’s still rounding second.” Homer then collapses on third and says: “let’s call it a triple”
Got to appreciate Mattingly's comment after Mr. Burns kicked him off the team. "I still like him better than Steinbrenner". At the time I had no idea the significance behind that comment.
Here's hoping you cover the greatest single game performance of baseball history: Bugs Bunny coming back against the Gashouse Gorillas. Dude had the best changeup of all time
Me: There's no video on RUclips that is made specifically for my interests. *sees a video with Homer at the Bat done in the style of a baseball statistical analysis video* Me: I stand corrected.
The best misfortune is what happened to Ozzie Smith. The only I can't feel sorry for is Mattingly. Burns told him repeatedly to shave his sideburns and he still refused to.
Possibly the greatest thing about the whole thing is the remake of the song "Talkin' Baseball" that plays over the end credits! Seriously, this episode is one of the greatest pieces of media ever created.
You should check out the season Bugs Bunny had in the 40s. He was the only guy on the team. He played every position. He even played pitcher and catcher at the same time! And he went undefeated. Imagine his WAR.
Great review video overall of an amazing episode but I'm glad someone outed the "scouting report" starting at 4:03 . Saxy boy''s actual strength was his offensive ability and not his "I've got the yips" defensive struggles (for a time) on throws from second to first base. Don Mattingly was an "above average hitter..." and "I think Mike Scioscia hit 20 home runs one year..." and "Wade Boggs finished his career with the Tampa Bay Devil Rays." Now that's top-notch reporting, lol!
@redfanrod Ozzie Smith: A defense-minded short stop that didn't hit a lot of home runs, but ended up in the Hall of Fame. Show some respect! You're talking about THE WIZARD. The man stole 580 bases and won 13 consecutive gold gloves! At least he mentioned the backflips 😂
The hypnotist Mr Burns hires was hilarious. He even hypnotized Mr Burns into thinking he did a good job, after he turned Roger Clemens into a chicken 😂
Supposedly canseco was originally meant to be stuck in bed with Edna krabappel in the original script but his ex wife found out so they had to change it
"Let's go over the ground rules. You can't leave first until you chug a beer. After Scoring chug a beer. You have to chug a beer at the top of all odd numbered innings, oh and the 4th inning is the beer inning." Chief Wiggum "Hey! We know how to play soft ball." Someone did their research.
The Mattingly bit with the side burns was a play on Steinbrenner's no facial hair rule for the Yankees. When Burn's cuts Mattingly off ths team he remarks, "I still like him better than Steinbrenner". Lots of small tidbits that went in towards this episode that's always gonna be a classic
That's actually another example of The Simpsons predicting the future. The incident between Mattingly and the Yankees actually didn't happen until _after_ this episode was recorded!
If Strawberry had 9 home runs, that meant he had to have had 9 at bats. That means that they bat the order 9 times - once an inning. The minimum runs scored in an inning in which a team bats around is 3, and that's if you leave the bases loaded. That means that they scored a minimum of 27 runs, and because of the fact that they were the home team, so did Shelbyville. We know they're the home team because Homer's hit by pitch was a walk off (so to speak) which only the home team can do. I guess my point is that all the other players are really good as was Shelbyville, who to our knowledge had no MLB stars on their roster. Also it bothers me that no one is on 3rd base when Homer comes up at the end.
"Don't worry ma'am, I'll save your cat!" This episode also birthed one of the best OSW Review running gags. Upon seeing a wrestler with very little or no hair on the sides of his head: "shave those sideburns, mate!"
Would love to see a retrospective on the Retroville 9’s cheating scandal sometime in the future. Downloading the combined strength of Babe Ruth, Mark McGuire, and Barry Bonds onto an AI bat is right up there with banging trash cans.
This was creative for opening day. Slick loved it. Now do the kid from rookie of the year at age 25. Trying to break his arm every summer to no success
"You know who ken griffey jr is come on" I feel like this would not be a natural line for Homer to say but I would very much like this episode re-cut with that line added in. It's gold.
Scioscia was in the episode because Carlton Fisk turned them down. Other players that were asked but refused include Nolan Ryan, Rickey Henderson and Ryne Sandberg.
And boy, do they regret it to this day. After all, no one has or will ever hear about Carlton Fisk, Nolan Ryan, Rickey Henderson, or Ryne Sandberg. Yup, no one 😁
you can really tell how he got all that power- the jiggle from the belly moves back and forth- creating energy so powerful it can send any ball into a space shuttle.
2:41 I wonder if Carl's table leg bat is a reference to when someone came to the plate with a table leg against Nolan Ryan, but was told it's not a legal bat and he replied 'Oh well, I probably still couldn't hit against him anyway.'
4:30 BTW, what's the deal with Five Points Vids player descriptions? Roger Clemens is an all time great with a mere accusation and Jose Canseco has a beautiful daughter who he gave a nickname when she was a small child.
Burns: "Mattingly! I thought I told you to trim those sideburns! Go home; you're off the team!" Mattingly: "I still liked him better than Steinbrenner." Burn.
Of course he still drinks it, even though he’s retired and in Cooperstown. It has an amazing flavour. “It feels like there’s a party in my mouth and everyone’s invited!” (How many people actually got the joke within a joke by changing ‘coming’ to ‘invited’?)
Tragic figure in my opinion, playing most of his career on bad to mediocre Yankee teams, and if he just hung on for one more year he would have won the World Series in 96. Only non hall of famer Yankee in my opinion deserving of a retired number.
Getting Darryl Strawberry to sign a ball with "But I hit 9 home runs today!" remains one of the highlights of my life.
Awesome!!!!
I really want to see that now
That's so cool!!
You should be very proud of yourself.
