I got my mews at an event where they didn't have a "mew machine", they had an employee holding a gameboy-looking thing and he traded it to you and gave you a paper certificate with the mew's matching ID number on the paper. I brought 2 gameboys with red and blue and I said "can you put on my little brother's game? He couldn't be here" and the nintendo guy was like "we're not really supposed to, but ok" so I got 2
The Eon ticket was also special because it was the only way to get the item Soul Dew in Gen III. It increased Latios and Latias Special Attack and Special Defense by 50 % which made them broken.
I used to have a big stack of eon tickets inside the brochures, I got them when one of the events was closing and they were packing up to leave. They also gave me some free enamel pins inside plastic pokeballs and 2 big vinyl raikou (like 6"?). I used to sell the eon tickets to kids at my trading card league for $3 each, and now I only have a few left
One of the many reasons why I love generation III, the mythical Pokémon felt actually RARE. Never had the chance to go to these distribution events but I had my goal of catching Latios in the Emerald main game to prove my friends I was good enough to get it without a DLC. Good times..
@@---oq5kb its funny cus all those encounters in gen 3 shouldve become postgame events in future games but instead they just throw you the pokemon with nothing special to it
@mirandarae7678 im interested in where the tile was? i know the exact location is like impossible to tell me but what route did you find it?? so cool you got one legit
I got Mew from a GameShark.... The "gym leader" at my local Toysrus brought his with him, and would take the kids games and catch Mew for them as well as other little cheats. He was a nice guy, just a college kid working at Toysrus who liked pokemon enough to know how the games worked.
I have a video on the Mew Machines! I got to interview an ex-Nintendo rep who discussed how they were repurposed for Gen 2 and probably wound up in a storage warehouse. Fun stuff
Just checked out the video. Very cool that you were able to track down a representative to discuss the machines further! I had actually considered doing something similar for this video, but it didn't feel right for the format/structure. Thanks for pointing me towards your video. It was a fun watch!
I saw and got a Mew for gen 1 the summer before the first movie came out, they took your cart and gave you a certificate when they gave you Mew, it was a huge deal. Pokemon was at its peak of popularity.
I like the concept of going physically to places to get mythical pokemon, I just wish i knew any of this was going on when i was a kid. I grew up with Silver and Crystal and i never knew that there was an event for Celebi or that Celebi even existed. Kinda makes me glad we live in an age now where, any time a legendary/mytical pokemon event gets announced. You can just download it through the internet instead of having to drive to locations far away from where you live just for the chance, or mailing your copy in like with the old games.
back then they were generally pretty selective generally it was just like three cities for events so if you couldn’t go there then you lost out which was pretty unfortunate with Gens 1, 2 and 3
Honestly, I always hated it. So many pokemon become flat-out impossible to get if you don't have an event happening nearby or for whatever reason can't physically make it out to the location in question. Especially as a kid, that becomes demotivating af.
Love these old events. Rarest one I ever got was a Jirachi in Gen 3 from Pokepark Taiwan. I found someone who'd entered a magazine competition to get it and then was able to pick it up at the Pokepark, think it was 2006. So I guess that's one other way to get a Jirachi in Gen 3, and despite being in Taiwan that's a Japanese version of it. I had the magazine clippings etc to prove it. Used to trade these events loads and Pokepark Taiwan Jirachis were one of the very rarest in the Gen 3 generations.
I remember when my local video store was shutting down, they actually had the gameboy e-reader complete in box, and a gameboy advance. I asked for it, but the store employee was not knowledgeable on it. So my mom wasn't convinced on me having it. My plan was to get an Eon Ticket later on and get the other dragon, but my buddy had a Latias that he could trade. I ended up grinding the hard way through Pokemon Colosseum to get the Ho-Oh. Beat Pokemon XD Gale of Darkness to get Lugia. That was really good trade bait for friends who needed them for their Dexes. Haha. It opened me up to getting A LOT of Pokemon to complete the national dex, as no one else had those games or if they did, they never beat them and grinded them out like I did. I did fall short in my quest to complete the National Dex in Emerald. I was missing Celebi, Mew, Totodile and Chikorita, Deoxys. Jirachi. Through the power of trading and knowing a lot of friends with Pokemon, I managed to get so close to completing the National Dex.
yup I remember the Mystery Mew where a TRU would have an event cartridge that had nothing but Mew in it and that event was one where you had to trade for it
Yup. The employee would tell us to prepare a junk trade Pokemon because they just had a bunch of copies and would trade you like normal. I was the only teenager amongst a sea of children and their parents lol.
I'm not the biggest pokemon fan, but I saw this video on my twitter timeline so I thought I would check it out! And damn! You're production values are fantastic! Really interesting to see how the distribution events involve. Here's hoping your channel continues to grow!
@@WhoAskedYou She brought me here, and I'll say this. I've seen many a Pokemon video, but not many that are this informative and able to maintain an appealing presentation. So keep up the good work and you'll find your way up! ;)

So first off, I am super late. I need to apologize for that. Life has been a pain in the booty with moving and other things. Second, dang. This video brought back so many memories. I still wish I could have gotten some of these Pokemon or gone to the events, but what is done is done. Awesome video as always, Kevin. I will make sure to watch part 2 soon. Much love. Keep up the awesome. :)
There were also some other distribution events in person where they handed out pokemon like the Aura Mew and Doel Deoxys. Or the 10Aniv Pokemon. I know this cause I mostly emulate my GBA games these days to upscale the graphics and for portability on my Phone. So, came across a thread discussing those events online or I had seen a video where someone spoke about Nintendo distribution cartridges for the GBA.
Got my mew at an event at my mall where they had Nintendo staff fight you with level 70 Pokemon via link cord they lent you after they gave you mew to your game boy.
It upsets me that Nintendo didn't think as much about how long people would care about these cartridges. Linking the data to a battery that can die essentially killed all our pokemon. I don't know how hard it was to make saves without a battery, but I know it is possible.
Mew and Celebi are my two favorite Pokémon of all time. Being Mew the first (the most important) and Celebi the second. I don't care if these two are impossible or estremely rare to catch because of time constraints in events, but these two will always be my favorite Pokémon even if neither of them officially have them. :')
celebi can be gotten in the vc crystal on 3ds, and you can get mew via the mew glitch in gen 1 vc and use the 8f glitch to make it transferable into the modern games!
Is that Pokémon Channel footage from my video? It makes the same menuing mistake and has the same cuts. Anyway, this was also how Jirachi was distributed in Australia.
Damn that Pokemon Channel Jirachi was a big throwback to my childhood memories. Dont know if its PTSD or genuine Love for the game tho :D A well made video!
So many events were, unfortunately, very limited in their reach. It's such a shame. Luckily with key-item distributions, the items can always be cheated into the games, so they're still there if people want to go back and try them out for fun.
@@WhoAskedYou I've actually tried this before. Back in the Gen 4 days, a friend of mine had an Action Replay, and we used to cheat the living daylights out of the title.
