It helped to know that "chestnut" and "saw" (usually occurring as "old chestnut" and "old saw") were terms for old sayings. It was also useful to know that ebony is a type of wood, so it must come from a tree.
I'm in the US. I've never heard BUDDY used as an invitation to fight...although I suppose if it was said in a very sarcastic tone, it could be considered hostile.

I got the Connections in the order you did without too much struggle. I did have two failed guesses before I solved everything in sequence: CHESTNUT ASH CHERRY GUM : Trees (one away!) EBONY CHESTNUT ASH CHERRY : Types of wood (one away!) I didn't think Ebony was a kind of tree nor gum being a kind of wood. What saved me I guess, I did hear something along the lines of an old chestnut referring to someone wise so I called the yellow category referring to wise sayings The purple category I called components of an automotive engine and I don't think I'm wrong in doing so.

🤔I'm an American, and I am not familiar with the usage of BUDDY that you mentioned. To me it means friend, or possibly something akin to "Dude!" as in "Really?" But certainly nothing to do with fighting! I would be interested to know in what context you have heard that. (Hopefully in a movie or something and not real life!)
I notice for strands you look for the spangram first. Any reason for this? I knew it had to be Jewel something but I couldn't see the rest so I found the gemstones in turn to eventually realize it was jeweltones which isn't even a word. I was looking for something like jewelry but it wasn't there.

I have heard it used in a sarcastic tone like SWEET LIPS or MISSY! 😂
Agreed. Here in WV we simply say "Bud" but it's really a way of saying hi to someone when you don't know their name.

Buddy as a friend is the prevalent usage, but I have heard it used as a pejorative.

I think if things are getting heated you might use that at the end of a sentence in an aggressive way something like "thats what you think BUDDY"
