    My doc block michelle x dark crystal with burgundy emergent leaves and red sinus was very worth $25, so I'm a fan of hybrids and accessibility. Even if I prefer some of the more "purebred" varieties I have a mental block about spending more than $30 on plants these days

    Way back during pandemic, i started to hoard plants esp philodendrons and even upgraded to variegated ones. But then space is a problem with philos or monsteras. So i started to shift on Anthoriums like Hookerii, jenmanii, superboom and other rounded leafer anthoriums… and i just love darker base

  • @tarinstephens9225
    @tarinstephens9225 Год назад +3

    From my understanding, most velvet type anthurium are from the ‘Cardiolonchium’ section of anthurium while Clarinervium was recently (past couple years) was placed in section ‘Andiphilum’ which include species like andicola, parvispathum, berriozabalense, lancetillense, leuconeurum, umbrosum, and pedatoradiatum!

    • @tarinstephens9225
      @tarinstephens9225 Год назад +2

      This was based on a genetic study, so that supports your theory that the parentage of the two diverged millions of years ago!

    • @tarinstephens9225
      @tarinstephens9225 Год назад +2

      Which brings up the topic of growers adding value to plants that are “cross-sectional” hybrids. These hybrids are very rare to occur because just the right combination of DNA from both plants has to come together. I’m not saying its impossible, but it is impossible to confirm unless you have thousands of dollars worth of genetic sequencing equipment.

      Yesssss this kind of thing makes my lizard brain so happy thanks for this!
      I eventually want to look into the details of this more but haven’t gotten to it yet. Do you know if paleo botanists have figured out how long ago the lineages diverged? I’m super curious because depending on when they think they diverged, some really interesting things were going on biogeographically

    • @tarinstephens9225
      @tarinstephens9225 Год назад +2

      @@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I haven’t come across any family trees that show the divergence, mostly because you need a fossil to calibrate the timeline. I’ve seen this some for plants in the catalpa family, but not for anthurium.
      What I do know is that anthurium most likely evolved from Potheae, or the true pothos family!

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Год назад +2

      Very good to know! I did some quick googling about anthurium fossils and the only thing I could on Google was about fossilized pollen from the Cretaceous so I’m hoping there maybe more info somewhere behind a paywall but I haven’t had the time to start trying to figure it out yet. Thanks so much for your comment, this was really fun!

    I would say that if you’re buying seeds - warning: not all seeds sprout. Some are just duds. Also, some of the plants that germinate from them are weak and would normally die in nature. I would never recommend paying too much for seeds.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Год назад +2

      Very true! If the seller doesn’t offer a minimum of two or three seeds, that’s a red flag as well!

      Especially if they are selfed! I had soooo many selfed seeds that weren't viable and just threw out malformed leaves or completely white ones... 😩 I think it is because of the limited gene pool that they are often not doing so... well...

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
