“If you really loved me you wouldn’t have missed” is always a banger. It’s hard to choose though. Goncharov’s little speech while winding up his pocket watch is iconic.

I gotta say the ice pick lobotomy scene is for sure my favorite I especially love the practical effects they used for it :]

I really loved the Leningrad flashback scene, when the group of street scavengers invite a young Goncharov to eat a frozen corpse.

I think the best part about Goncharov is that Martin Scorsese’s in on the joke.

For me, Ice Pick Joe’s death is so beautifully shot and emotional; plus, the sadness of Katya’s ending - I’m destroyed every time.💔

there's a lot about the movie to love, but people SLEEP on the musical score, which is itself a work of genius.
the use of Goncharov's lullaby as a motif throughout the film is amazing, especially at the end - it's a perfect representation of Goncharov as a divided man, and showcases his duality. the jump cuts between goncharov singing the song as he dies to comfort his men, his wife singing the lullaby to their newborn, and the flashback to the childhood scene where he scraped his knee and his mom sang the lullaby to comfort him. it drives home the tragedy of the film, and does a great job of communicating the idea that Goncharov alone steered himself from innocence towards his ultimate fate.
    It's a beautiful film.

I am *so* glad you talked about Matteo's influence on the film. So many people overlook him because he's not a household name like Scorsese, but I seriously believe the themes of the movie would not have been even half as potent if not for Matteo. One of the most important themes in Goncharov is the attempt to break the cycles of violence that surround you and the very tragedy of being trapped in that cycle in the first place, and once you learn about Matteo's attempts to escape his homophobic family and forge a path based on love instead of tradition, it becomes easy to see how he helped to shape the plot and bring the characters to life. I'm shocked his work fell into obscurity with time, but I'm glad he's getting the attention he deserves now!

I normally tend to shy away from this kind of explainer video format since it tends to paint a very reductive picture of how art is meant to be interpreted. That said, I do hope this is able to get people to better understand some of the messages this film it putting out there so people can come to their own conclusions.

Harvey Keitel's performance is one of my favorites of his. He gives so much depth to Andrey - from the male ingenue to the hardened criminal to the naive lover to the tragic deuteragonist... could make my own video essay on it if I had the time!

Also related: Wes Weston, the Danny Phantom character who Doesn't Exist. He is so prevalent in the DP fandom, that many hardcore diehard fans of DP genuinely believe he exists. He doesn't. His character design appears once in the background in the scene. Fascinating stuff though!

I normally don't like to ascribe to biographical readings of films, but I do think this is definitely an interesting example of a filmmaker using their platform to discuss the issues that affected their life.

This was excellent. I love the effort you put into spoofing a typical media analysis video essay vibe - the sheer amount of footage you must have had to trawl through I cannot imagine. Also, are those the fan-made goncharov scores playing as the background music? If so, excellent!! If not, you have clearly chosen the music with intent, it really fits all what goncharov represents; evocative of cinema of years gone, the romantic image of Italy and the sinister shadow of the soviet union. your final point; that Goncharov serves as a positive marker of the human condition, was a very warming and hopeful note to end on. thoroughly enjoyed!

A lot to the music is actually commissioned by the lovely Molly Noise, who you can find on mollynoise.bandcamp.com.
But I did also source a number of these goncharov tracks to the amazing fan music composed by multiple Goncharov experts. If you check the description, I have linked to a post that contains all of the different fan tracks that were used

oh dear god. so sorry to break the unreality but i wish i had been looking at the screen to understand how in the fresh hell Matteo's supposed lastname was written for you to read it like that before getting to nearly eight minutes of this. De Sciocchezze. Of Stupid Things. Im going to explode. Who was it, among the insane amount of collaborative work in making this hellish trojan horse, the genius who suggested that name. I'm going to shake their hand and wheeze my soul out. If it was you, godspeed.
I did contribute in a minimal part to Goncharov - describing a small deleted scene where an unnamed girl assassin is chased after killing a character and ends up falling from a cliff to her death, after which she gets picked apart by crabs! It was supposed to lead into the famed apple scene between Andrej and Goncharov. I took down the post shortly after for a friend who was having genuine problems with the widespread lack of proper tagging as "unreality", but it should still be in the google doc.
It was a really cool video honestly! I hadn't expected so much actual analysis of particularly external factors - i thought the subject might have been more the absurd amount of work put into something that doesnt exist, all the fanart and analysis and gifsets and jokes and the ntire first 8 minutes, but i was very pleasantly surprised and captivated. Im glad you included the positives too.
so so sorry for the huge wall of text that says relatively little!! hope youll have a good one!

Loved this video!! I was there for the beginnings of Goncharov and remain obsessed with it. It’s trending again due to the tiktok knockoff which will not be named, so I checked out this video. Can’t believe I hadn’t seen it before!! Anyways, I’m surprised you didn’t mention Arthuriana at all! I’d definitely seen some posts floating around about that and I really love the idea that humans have always been Like This. I hadn’t seen anything about that essay you quoted from, so that’s definitely on my to read list now. Sorry for the long comment, but again, great video and now I have something to send my friends when they ask what the hell I’m infodumping about now.

Unpopular opinion, but tbh I think the imagery in Goncharov was WAY TOO on the nose.
The apple/pomegranate scene? Like ok we get it.
The clock motif is cool, but its just SO overdone throughout the movie.
Idk I mean I mostl like Goncharov for the gay ships ngl 😂 (also Katya is really hot)
I dont usually like mafia films.
