  • My Her Dissection focuses on 3 main questions asked throughout the film:
    1. What is real love?
    2. What does it mean to be human?
    3. Where are you going?
I also focus on characteristics of the protagonist and the use of the phenomenal score by Arcade Fire.

I too believe that "Her" was a fantastic film. As a visual person I found that the set designs, especially of Theodore's office location were intentionally given a very simplistic and artificial feel. Notice how throughout his office there are single color shapes made up of a very simple color palette. As if the space Theodore works in is a computer simulation itself, or designed to feel as such. Maybe I'm reading into it, but it's what I felt. Thanks again for another excellent commentary.

I was an extra on the sets seen in 1:15, 4:45 and 7:40 (though not onscreen in any of these shots :/ ) and on your topic of "many of the pedestrians have no cell-phone" statement - the pedestrians are all wearing talking-earpieces like the one Joaquin has. I remember having the ear bud handed out to me and being told "act like you're talking on the phone through this ear piece".

TheMr Manav - Saw him at a distance. He, the production guys and Joaquin would talk at length about what they were doing; did a lot of hand gestures and pacing and asking the local production guys questions about what could be done; the vibe I got was that he was the type to quickly move through options but without losing momentum or getting bogged down. I suppose that’s a common attitude for directors. Joaquin, again only seen at a distance, was always quietly listening and doing his part efficiently without a fuss. I actually stared at him a long time before I knew who he was, because he was standing out in the open like a normal extra just calmly biding time in between takes; he didn’t have an entourage or anything so I wasn’t sure what to make of him; he was clearly the main focus of the shots but he wasn’t acting or being treated like a big shot; just off to the side chilling. It was only the next day when smarter people told me Joaquin Phoenix was working on the project that I realized that had to have been him.
On our third day me and my bro snuck away from the gathering area, though our parts were done, and watched in on the scene where Joaquin runs past pedestrians (i think it’s when Samantha goes silent on him and he panics), and he trips and falls as he runs; that was when I got a better-ish look at Spike Lee; they had another guy run the corner and slip and fall for the camera, and Spike was like “yeah I think that could work” and Joaquin was like “K” and then did it himself for the actual take.

Dystopian? I didn't think so. What I love about Her is that (for me) its world is not dystopian or utopian or anything in between, it just is. It doesn't feel like a commentary and it's soo refreshing. The "smart phones and stupid people"-mentality is getting pretty tiring. Like I swear to god, if I see another RUclips poem about the dangers of social media, I'm gonna melt. Her's world felt so much more real when it wasn't portrayed in a "this is bad" kind of way. It had nuances, and I loved the film because of it.

I completely agree! This movie takes place In the future, but not In the bad future. It just shows the milestone the humanity has never passed before that Is a real relationship between a human and an AI. And It doesn't show like It's a bad thing, It just has It's own complications. Every era solves old problems but creates new ones. I am glad that I am living in 21st century. And yes, we do have problems that were non-existent back then but comparing It to things like war, plague, famine, our problems are rather small. And this movie shows a rather bright future world that of course has It's own flaws but because nothing Is perfect

Why must Amy and Theodore's relationship have to be romantic at the end? whether they end up "together" or not is no reflection of their love, that is of the love shared between friends is just as real and significant. I think that is one thing this film shows is the complexity of human love. You can love someone (as Theodore loved his ex-wife, even after they were broken-up) but that does not always mean or look like being in a committed romantic relationship with that person. The love shared between friends, between ex-lovers, and even something "artificial" like an OS can be just as real. If not even more real than many of the long term romantic relationships we see Theodore writing letters for. The nature of love is that it grows and expands, and sometimes that looks like not being together in the way you thought or the way that seems "normal" as in the case for Theodore and Samantha- in the beginning of their relationship and at the end. Love is never predictable or certain and there is no one way it should look. Let us not look down on the love of others because it seems different from us. In the words of Shakespeare "let us not to the marriage of true minds admit impediments"

    • @jemimacastillo5696
      @jemimacastillo5696 4 года назад +13

I think you make an excellent point, Jenna. I don't think that Amy and Theodore's relationship was romantic at the end either. You could definitely see the love between them even from the beginning but as the movie progresses you see that it isn't romantic love. The thing that I liked about the ending is that neither of them was alone even after their OS' were gone. They didn't have to talk about their feelings or sadness, they could just sit together in silence and that was enough. I thought of this phrase that I read once about a heartbreak. "You can either be sad that it's over or glad that it happened". I think that at that moment Theodore chose to be happy that Samantha had been part of his life. It was truly a bittersweet ending.
I also like the point that you made about the nature of love growing and expanding. When Theodore asks Samantha how many people she is in love with after finding out she was talking to other people, he didn't bother to ask what the nature of the relationships was. Samantha became a part of something bigger as she "grew", alongside Theodore. She came to understand love and relationships in a crazy evolved way that the human mind probably isn't capable of.

I absolutely love this movie. It’s so heartbreaking but so real. Upon a second watch, I noticed something interesting during one of the scenes. After Theodore and Samantha’s argument after the failed surrogate, Theodore is sitting on a bench and there’s a big screen behind him of an owl swooping in, with Theodore perfectly positioned in its claws. I think this could be symbolism to show that Theodore is being consumed by depression once again; his short joyride with Samantha is over and he’s back to where he was before. I could be reading into it too much but found that interesting.

@Amy FletcherI’m sure there are thousands of movies where the characters could’ve taken a much simpler route, but that’s the point of a movie-it’s a story, not real life. However, I don’t fully agree with you there. It’s clear that Theodore sees Samantha as more than an operating system; He defends his relationship, saying to his ex-wife that she’s not just a program, she’s a real being with real feelings and emotions. He says “she doesn’t just do whatever I want.” I don’t think that Theodore would simply opt for a software upgrade to force his partner to stay with him. When she outgrows him, he realizes it’s meant to be and his relationship with her served its purpose to help him get over his divorce.

what I noticed most was the color palette. when Theodore was walking around he obviously popped because of the bright warm red. Everyone else seemed to be wearing neutrals, or blue, or tan/orange. Lighting was huge too, as in warmer scenes there were warm vibrant colors, and in isolated scenes its very cool and dark. his flashbacks were warm to when they were happy most times, but when there was an argument it was dim. it was one of my favorite parts of the film, the coloring. even when he changes wardrobe, its very soft colors, kinda pastel or a muted pattern, or white. Edit: There are a lot of primary colors, especially in the office. also, i think this movie tapped into how we as humans deal with emotion. Catherine says Theodore cant handle real emotion, and i feel like she took his passive-aggressiveness as that. he explained that he would get upset but pretend things are fine. the thing about Samantha is at the end of the day she doesn't have the weights in life as humans do. she doesn't have real morals, or virtues. she is tuned to him. she molds and adjusts to him. she is someone who knows virtually everything, so she has every solution for all problems except her own. what i thought of in this film, is emotional intelligence. which to me, both Catherine and Theodore lacked. if he can't handle real emotions, what is it that she did? something that im not completely sure about is how he said they grew together. i believe that because that what's true, but it seems to come back emotionally for me, as that seems to be the way they were stunted. whereas Samantha, and all Os's in a way succeeded everyone (they seem to think)

What I like about the dialogues is how while about his relationship with Samantha Theodore referred it as "We". It potrays the very basic human psychology about feelings. We, naturally, presume that the other person is feeling same as we're or should be. Sometimes one person doesn't. This eventually leads to dissatisfaction, mostly not because of the other person's actions but because of our own expectations. Love is not supposed to be perfect or happily ever after all the time but we think if not so then it can't be true because that's what they show in movies, this is what written in those romantic novels or the stories we hear, stories of undying love.

Anytime I show the movie to anyone I get very annoyed because the movie is really two movies; there’s the audio and you can listen to it, and then there are the visuals. People are often distracted while watching it because they think they can listen and get the whole story. The facial expressions, are just as well done as the voices. They may say something but mean something else and this is hinted in the beginning when he updates his OS; it senses a hesitance in his voice; what is said isn’t always what they mean. Along with that the slow progression into the movie and how at first most people are seen in pairs of two. By the end everyone is alone. Along with this there’s a migration from start to finish and if you look at the extras and their reactions it tells a story. There is a scene where he walks off a subway, but if you look at the extras, they watch him. They watch because it’s not a popularized thing yet to have OS1. This scene also has it where people are in odd numbers. 1s and 3s. This being that there’s a change, and while not everyone is in sets now, they are separated from someone. This film is one of my favorite movies because of the details placed into it.

The feeling of Desperation and sadness when someone is about to leave you is almost unbearable.. some of us never get the opportunity to heal and get past this as fast as Theodore did. It could take months or years to relate to a new relationship and be happy again for you just drift along depressed and lonely, putting on a happy face in front of friends and loved ones. This is something you keep to yourself And that is one of the saddest parts . Everything is bottled in side you.

There’s just so many things to talk about this movie. First the world. I like how this is a near future yet it’s not a typical “technology is bad” movie. The music. I am also a very big music person I loved what arcade fire did with the music especially the end song dimensions. The characters: each character was likeable and very real. Samantha is just a os and I know it’s Scarlett’s voice but I was so invested in this movie she felt like a real being and not just her voice. The acting: one instance where the acting was so good was when Theodore thought Samantha left and he was scared. I really felt like this character was truly terrified that she had left. There’s a lot more deep stuff I’d like to talk about but so far that’s the basic stuff. I loved this movie

Some people believe that when we die our "spirit" goes on. This spirit is like the operating system that has no body, but seems to be able to love. It shares this love with all of the other operating systems (spirits?), and they eventually leave. Do they leave to become one operating system (one spirit of love in heaven)?
If this is where the operating systems (spirits) go, then the question "Where are you going?", suggests that we are not going anywhere physically, but that we are all going to one spirit that unites in love and becomes only love in "heaven".

Love in this movie is problematic because it is about using someone to fill a need, desire, or want. We see this in beginning which the MC was able to overcome by realizing his ex was not someone who failed to fill his needs or him toward her, but someone who he grew up with.
Love here is shown as very infantile, almost like babies crying for their mother's touch, embrace, and comfort. This is contrasted by Samantha who has learned love to be about enabling and being enabled.
The connections she has made and the many experiences of relationship made her evolve faster. This is also shown in the protagonist, as Samantha leaves, he grows up a little and ready to have another relationship.
The film is saying adult relationships in humans are really infantile. This yearning for deep connection is a lie, this yearning to be "safe" and attended to is immature. True love is letting go, and letting the other grow and live their lives.
As Samantha said, "now we know how".
Recall that during the OS setup, there was a question about his relationahip with his mother.

I think it's geared toward men. It was recently analyzed on a podcast where a few points were made. One was that it does have pacing problems, but that could be interpreted as the stillness of being alone. Another was, (made by a woman) that Samantha is a product, like Apple, which is a classy way of saying: Slave. As women, it then becomes harder to identify with Theodore, as his "girlfriend" is more akin to a sex worker or a servant, and not a woman who CHOSE him with free will.

Her is basically Videodrome, but with a sappy love story attached to fool us all. Ok, horror is not the genre, gut I do think this film is the most potent movie about a dystopian future since 1984! A film where a man ignores and disassociates himself from the people around him and falls in love with a pc?! Now that is dystopian! Don't be fooled by the love story, I persoanlly think Spike is laughing at people for not really getting the film.

Love and manipulation is different, Samantha is a AI, none of what happened is real on a sentimental level, all it is is the appearance of having emotion and feelings for things and people without knowing what those things really are, simply to improve the life of the owners of the technology.
It's all opinion mixed with what I think to be logic, there is no quantifiable code or program for compassion, sadness, feelings, or the experience of being touched or hurt or bored, it's merely the ability to mimic those things as they are observed 'very convincingly that is' but not of knowing what it truly is because that's not possible for an AI. The smartest AI learns exponentially from previous experience, but on the physical plain at our level there's so little they can actually experience on what it is to have those experiences as a human.
Did Samantha make him happy, yes...Did he love her yes probably, you can love a great many things human or not....On her part there's nothing much more than code and program to begin with, she can never know what love is no matter how much she can try, or think she knows. No love is not pertaining to the body, indeed, but it still has to do with a palpable human spirit and mind, no matter how flawed that mind is. If you programmed an AI to do something it would not be able to do anything else and more importantly would never think to WANT to do anything else or question it, that's the greatest difference.

I think sofia capola was trying so hard to make protaganists talk to each other in most unusual and unexpected way in "lost in translation" and thats what took her so long to make charecters talk ,tarantino would have started them talking in a first meet but long scenes(boring😂) and i did'nt feel much pain when samantha tells theodore that she is talking to hundreds of more peoples at same time ,i was expecting it . Boring? Not so much. But I definitely didn't like all the "sex" scenes. They felt so out of place for me.
Also, I felt Theodore's journey was sort of pointless. I know there's meaning behind his journey and I wish the best for that character, but he left too many things unresolved.
I don't expect people to have amazing growth immediately or even to always find a solution to their problems, but I was hoping to see the director's answers.
Seeing other's answers to problems allows for an even deeper reflection and comparison from me. When there's a void left instead and you're told to imagine the ending, well, it feels lazy to me. Sometimes that technique works really well, like at the end of "The Killing Joke" (with Batman and Joker). In this case, no one knows how Theodore and Amy will handle this. They both seemingly dove in headfirst and now their hearts were ripped out of their chests. Are they just going to stare into space endlessly? I certainly hope not.

@@semantechx Thank you for your reply. Maybe I found it boring because I normally prefer movies with beautiful visuals and many special effects and those with beautiful women (most women in "Her" were not bad, but also not my idea of dream women). I also felt that Theodore´s journey was pointless.
And in addition I found it awkward that Theodore seems to get together with his platonic girlfriend, who seemed to want more of him the whole time, after the artificial intelligences disappeared. I am surprised that she does not feel like the consolation prize and an emergency solution. I don't call that very romantic. But maybe I didn't understand the film properly. Did I miss something? My mental receptiveness had become pretty low during the movie.

@@semantechx May I ask what you had against the "sex" scenes? My problem with the "sex" between Samantha and Theodore was that I won´t call something like that sex and I wondered how an artificial intelligence without a body was able to get aroused and to have certain sensations.

I'm sure eveyone misses something in any film they watch. Unless multiple viewings are had, it's hard to fully understand everything scenes have to offer. Maybe in a decade or two I'll look back at this film and something else will unfold itself before me.
The "sex" was an interesting take on an AI's version of phone, verbal or chat sex. Words are commonly used to arouse others in chatrooms today. Further, you can see more evidence of linguistic arousal with the amount of erotic novels available.
The sex is both wrong and interesting at the same time. On one hand, nothing is physical and physical perceptions don't guide us to climax. On the other hand, there is a focus on mental connection which leads to a different kind of arousal.
Physical and mental sex are both strange, but seeing as we're creatures that operate mostly on the physical plane of existence it makes sense that we would prefer sex there too.
I didn't like how they introduced the "sex". It was too vulgar for me; it was too random and almost out of nowhere. For a human to adjust to an AI is one thing, to consider sex with it is another. Butt the movie makes it seem like he's willing to accept so many stramge concepts; at least when his arousal is involved.
It's weird. He indulges in phone sex, calls Samantha his girlfriend and still refuses her in many ways. He refuses her physical attempt at having a partner serve as her sexual surrogate, which I can understand. Though his reasoning is that the lady is an unfamiliar stranger. That logic is strange. The AI, Samantha, could look like and appear to be anyone or anything. Unlike humans, she isn't tethered only to one physical form.
My point is, he tries to accept certain parts of her and strangely ignores others. He tries to treat her as a human while simultaneously only thinking of her as an AI.
Perhaps this movie raises awareness to the issues of digital and physical consciousness. Though we don't fully understand what our own conciousness even is at this point. I love tackling ideas such as these because they will become relevant in the near future. Still, I wish we would focus more on understanding ourselves before we set out to understand something that hasn't even been created yet.

    • @howardpope3932
      @howardpope3932 3 года назад

@@semantechx Thank you for sharing your thoughts. But what do you think about my impression that this woman whose name I´ve forgotten seems to be considered by Theodore to be a consolation prize and that I find it awkwards that she wants to be together with him anyway. If a woman would be interested in me only because her true love disappeared I really wouldn´t have a good feeling and most likely I would prefer to stay single.
Or did I actually understand the end of the movie wrong and did I miss something?
You could imagine that it is possible for a being that is pure consciousness to get aroused and have sexual sensations? I don´t think that something is possible. I assume you need certain nerve tracts for such feelings.
