He’s almost an icon in Christian music. The successful, gold-record, award-winning singer-songwriter who seems to have his life, family and walk in place. It probably all came easy for him, right? A product of natural talent?
The road to musical influence for Michael W. Smith has had multiple stops, including some places you would not expect. Such was the case at age 17 when he moved to Nashville to pursue a musical career. Leaving home with a foundation of God’s blessing, Michael’s first jobs took him to after-hours bars where he flirted with temptation-and more. The flirtation involved drug use, which ultimately led to a near-death experience. He was in the “pit of life, and looking at no escape.”
Then he asked for God to do anything to get his attention. With that came Michael’s rescue, leading to the impact his songs have brought to millions and an identity that is secure in Christ.

The more screwed up the individual who comes to faith in Christ, the greater the glory it brings to God; and all it He deserves.

Yes and...maybe it's you who creates the RUclips channel for them! Get some gain yourself. Turning anything we oppose into opportunity. My experience of this channel is very enlightening. It's been a huge assistance for people who find me and want transformation work. Its encouraging people who begin with me, thinking seeking money first, over God, then watch people like Michael, with fame or abundance, talk of how they've attained it (or retained it) through the power of Jesus Christ, their closeness to Him from holding Him first. 🎉 Thank you for bringing this topic up. Starting that RUclips channel of others sharing their stories could be very inspiring as well, lucrative and loved as well. May be why you this perspective come to you. Blessings. Always. ❤

Good guy. Great testimony. I never realized he came from such a rough beginning. I never knew about the drug use. I grew up with this man's music (I am 50) and I always thought he was a stereotypical mid-western bible belt born and raised believer who never got into any trouble. Nice to see he's human! More importantly, nice to know he's second!

one more note to this: those who don't believe think we should be perfect too. not just the "famous" christians like michael or amy. we all are sinners saved by grace, not perfect, but we know where to turn to for forgiveness and love. We all are sons and daughters of the Most High. we just need to reach out to not just the world, but each other as well.

I discovered MWS soon after I discovered Amy Grant's music back in high school at 16 yrs old. I'm 45 now. Always liked both artists and still do. Just don't believe in God anymore. Someone else commented that it's easy to believe when your life turns out like Michael's. I agree. Sure Mike had trials and had to struggle but in the end, it all worked out. Makes it easy to have faith. Not that easy for the rest of us who have struggled their whole life with no good times and no relief from the darkness. After a lifetime of always doing the right thing but always getting dumped on in one way or the other, I cried out to him countless times in the past. His response --- to burden me more with a severe disabling physical illness (with no cure) and crippling anxiety and suicidal depression that lasted for yearsssssss. I wept and wept and wept for him to help me...I begged him for mercy, but he never answered. So I finally gave up seeking him and came to the conclusion.. either he is not real or he plays favorites. I think i'd prefer he be not real, cause to think that he is real but he just doesn't give a sh*t about me is really depressing.

@eblackwo Maybe it seems more powerful because there are more people that can relate with his testimony because they have been there or they know someone who has been there before. It gives hope and shows he is human. I do agree it would have been better for him not to get into drugs.....but it seems to be something people can gain hope and inspiration that they too can overcome and that God would help them also from their bad situations.

    10.2

Brother, all I can say is that even if he does not proclaim the name of Jesus or God does not mean he is not saved or anything like that. For the longest time I never proclaimed the name of Christ. I used to be a a drug addict and satanist, I blasphemed God and wanted to kill myself because I knew it would cause others pain then one day God called out to me and that all changed. Even so, I still got high even after I got saved but He slowly changed all that. 5:00 on is what God has done for him.

  • @almalee1

And the reason God, which is truth accepts us, is because of the truth he is. If we acknowledge that we are sin, because that is what we are, then truth which is God must accept us. Why? Because when we accept the truth then we are a part of the truth. Which makes us sons of the truth, the sons of God.

Smith's videos and cd/record jackets are covered with occult imagery.

Jack Rosenthal Well, I guess you know the way the scriptures say you know someone is a follower of Christ....it says you know a tree by its fruit and you will know they are Christ’s disciples by their love. He expresses his love for the lost at the begging of the video. By the way, I know Michael and have toured with him. I will never forget how he prayed for me during one of the most difficult times in my life. He’s the real deal. He loves Jesus. We spend devotional time together sharing in the words every night before those dates.

Jesus is God in the flesh. From this video, he was apparently saved at a very young age. Proclaiming the name of Yahweh God is the same as proclaiming the name of Christ. Music was created by God but the enemy uses it to get what he wants. As long as the guy is following God's will for His life then he is on the right track. We have no right to judge who is right in this world and who is wrong, love as you have been loved is our calling.

Get a hobby man. Michael proclaims Christ in his church, in his role as Pastor, and in every concert I've seen or watched in recent years. He does loads of missions work and outreach that goes largely unreported, which is good because it's not about him. Did he go through a period where he wasn't exactly right with God. Yes Ma'am. Who hasn't? When he sing Secret Ambition, or the Wonderful Cross, or he sings, "deep in love with you, precious Jesus", he's proclaiming the name of Christ.

S B j he has been telling this same story since the 80's. This isn't new information. Drug use was late 70's. So no, not some new marketing ploy,
