  • Testing of oils is a complex operation requiring several ASTM certified test. The one arm bandit is an uncertified test that can be manipulated to give varying results. At best this device was designed to test extreme pressure additives in gear lubes and not anti-wear additives in motor oil.

You mentioned flat-tappets, could this test be useful for that?

So what does determine engine oil's film strength?

    |i used to use the one arm bandit, we would say this test is not the real test, its just a demonstration of how good the friction modifier that wynns industrial divisions products are, especially after we send the oil they use after the use in industrial machines worth millions of dollars and then use the same oil, but with the friction modifiers we give them to test it in the machines and then send both oils used to a oil lab for testing and a print out of everything they found, and sure enough 44 gallon drums of the friction modifiers were sold because of the LAB testing ,so wynns products do work ,but in this day and age before the environmental considerations, the oils were either semi synthetic or full synthetic, but with totaly different friction additives used, compared to now in new oils especially those 0 w 30 oils? official friction testing for motor oils and other various grades of oils is this test ruclips.net/video/nxTViMKn9a0/видео.html, then there's more of less the same method to test grease and gear oils but different standards and machines when producing the products for the market and why not one oil will tell you what friction modifiers are used and what % of various friction products are used boron, chemical or mineral oil based etc etc. :) Also why the OE Car companies say NOT to USE friction additives, why because in this new age its about catalytic convertors and using the wrong friction additive will block your cats full stop and the O2 sensors as well, thus your engine light will come on eventually etc. :)

You strike me as every bit as much of a snakeoil salesman as the people doing the bandit tests. Just something disingenuous about you - can't quite nail it down, but it's there.
