I had a college professor named H. Craig Collins at St. John's University in the early 1980's, WW II vet and retired NYPD. He was a sergeant in the NYPD and from 1970-1973 was head of the city's gang unit, reporting directly to the mayor of NY. He wrote a book about the gangs of that time period in NYC, especially the Bronx. They all wore vests - "colors"- to identify themselves. Pretty much non-existent by 1979, but what a cool flick this was.
In Chicago,in the 60’s-80’s all the gangs had sweaters that had their respective colors. They used to fight and kill each other for stealing each other’s sweaters. They stopped wearing them because they were open targets from rival gangs and police.

I like how much the intro showing main 9 members of the Warriors kinda captures their characters that would be expanded upon later in the game. What I love about this movie is what I love about New York. People from different races, backgrounds, and cultures coexisting with one another. Everybody is just vibing and hanging together. Basically everyone is colorblind.
I am not sure that The Warriors provides the best example of different people co-existing, vibing and hanging. The gang culture was not only perpetually violent with groups defending turfs and fighting others, a lot of the gangs - as portrait in the movie - were formed based on ethnic identies. They were all in some ways very exclusive. Skin colour, nationalities, neighborhood (socio-economic background). @@xro1983
One of the most underrated movies. What makes it even more amazing was that the entire film was shot at night in keeping with the theme. Amazing job by everyone involved.
Looking back on this movie one has to be impressed by the ambitious nature of this film. The costume designer alone is the real hero of this movie each gang had su h a distinct look the number of extras needed for the big meeting alone must have been a nightmare to pull off.
Great point and this is all pre-CGI,so they had to do everything for real. The sheer logistics of setting everything up couldn't have been fun. I don't know if they used any matte paintings in the movie, though.Matte paintings were used in a lot of movies prior to CGI and some movies even still use them today but they're usually digital matte paintings instead of the hand-painted ones of old.

The Warriors, Taxi Driver, Cruising, Marathon Man, Wall Street, 9 1/2 weeks, Hair, Ghostbuster, Annie Hall... . New York back then had a vibrancy and energy that was simply electrifying.
@@xro1983
You forgot Death Wish with Charles Bronson.
I wish we got to see more of the gangs from this intro in the movie! Some go by so quick, and they all look awesome!
My favourite movie of all time. Taxi driver is up there too. 1970 NYC movies were great!
One of the best marriages of scenery and music, perfectly building up tension and keeping pace. The music is truely the unsung hero in this movie.
This movie was a masterpiece and too good for it's time
The movie is to good for today. Its not mainstream and never was appreciated on a mass scale
Yes, a really great picture. I love it, seen it 5 times allready, and i wil see it more.
4:50 "Who wants to hide?" Epic!
Clean’s screen time is so limited yet precious. 😢he is a good leader and decent guy
Check the deleted scenes, he’s in a good majority of them
Might be the most nostalgic intro of any film ever. It’s literally perfection. I pray they never try to remake this classic
Rest in peace to my mother for showing me such a classic, it was a true bonding moment watching this movie, my dance team even did this movie as a theme, it’s here on RUclips under the title “THROWBACK SHOW 2015 CLIP 5”…… RIP REMBRANDT AND COCHISE
Cleon: It's still on and we're goin'. Cyrus sent an emissary this afternoon to make sure. Now, Cyrus don't want anybody packed and he don't want anybody flexing any muscle. So, I gave him my word that the Warriors would uphold the truce.
katastar i love that part when Cleon says that
Now everybody says that Cyrus is the one and only. I think we’d better go have a look for ourselve 👌
Slayer Hippy a small but memorable performance by Dorsey Wright(Cleon) now age 62.
jim68 I wonder how it would’ve played out for the character had he not left for that other movie role.
chingaso316LOST Play the ps2 and Xbox video game of the warriors cleon had a bigger part in the game fighting the other gangs.
Magic… whole lotta magic!
Rest in peace Cochise 💔
One of my fav gangsta movies truly iconic and badass 🖤
Yeah it is
I've never seen this movie in this high quality before! Would love to see it again in this resolution.
Listening to the theme song makes it physically impossible to not walk like you own whatever place you happen to be walking in.
The movie is off the hook.
It IS the hook!
u got it bub

One of my all time favorites! NICE! Thank you for sharing.
One of my all time favorite movies. I never get tired of watching it.
A movie so great, it cannot be remade.
The game was a hit
Love this film, one of the first i ever watched on vhs
Saw this movie when I was like 8 years old, I’m 24 now. Still a classic everyone should watch.
I saw it in the theater : )
One of the best opening scenes in cinema
I was born January 23, 1979. This great movie was released February 9, 1979. Which makes me and This movie 45yrs old. I even loved playing the game. I wish Rockstar would bring the game back with today's graphics and an online multiplayer option. I'm from the Bronx, born and raised.
My dad inteoduced me to this movie and i fell in love with it. Im 21 now and would love to see a movie that takes place in this world the warriors were created in. But the way hollywood is these days i dont want them to destroy and disinterest me in the worlds these classic movies created. E.g (" Star wars") and everyother remake, remaster and sequel thats shat out these days just to profit off the original classic, great films that were made years ago
This is probably one of the most badass movie intros i have seen
