In this Video I go over MY recommendation for fluid change intervals and I give plenty of examples just why.

Always always a WEALTH of knowledge!!!! I mean if you are not the head of Ford’s repair program they are missing OUT!!! You explain everything really well so that everybody can understand. Thanks
Youdaman, thanks.I always enjoy watching your videos.Keep up the great work. Thanks again.
Glad to have run into your channel today. Am owner of 2007 Ford Five Hundred Limited. Have researched all I can about its variable transmission and how to change the oil and filter. Will let you know how it actually goes.
Thanks so much for this video. I had asked you about this on a forum and you did say to change the fluid/filter at 60k. I'm trying to make my '09 F-150 last forever if possible and your help with these videos is great in achieving that.
The 6spd automatics in the escapes are so easy to change some of the fluid out of in regular intervals with the drain plug on the bottom....not very hard at all or very expensive to do in your own driveway or garage if you plan on keeping it for awhile. The LV fluid is pretty reasonably priced.
Hi @FordTechMakuloco thanks for the video! I recently bought my first car. It's a 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium with a 6F35 and 105K miles on it. I couldn't afford anything newer, and honestly, I felt in love with the car. Three months later and now more experienced about cars I noticed that the transmission always shifts hard from 2 to 3rd gear.
I then took the car to have the transmission fluid changed and it was very, very dirty. It probably had never been changed. (I also tried Seafoam Trans Tune before the fluid change)
With the new fluid now the 2-3rd shift slips. After reading about the problem I added Lucas witch did help with the slip. But the shift is not smooth.
I followed another video you posted got an OBD adapter and cleared the adaptative table, and the problem is still there. It's kind like when it's about to shift from 2-3 the transmission has to push a little harder to succeed and you as the driver feels a kick.
I have been reading about transmissions and everyone says it's a very expensive repair, and some people even get rid of the car.
I know that just from my words there's no way to tell for sure what my car has, but if I take it to a transmission repair shop, how much should I expect the repair to cost me? I only ask because I do love the car, but as a student I have limited budget.
ps: All other shifts feel very smooth and they don't slip.
Will be doing my 1st 30,000 fluid and filter change on my 17 F150's 6R80 transmission. Purchased a new stock volume transmission pan at Amazon for $38. It's the "Dorman 265-854 Transmission Pan With Drain Plug". Will be able to now drain Mercon LV fluid from pan before removing pan. Hopefully a little less mess.
Oops....my '07 Taurus has 207,000 on it now....all highway. I've never changed the fluid....still shifts fine! I probably ought get on that, hih? Lol! Love your videos! You are a great teacher!
I installed Dorman transmission pans with Drain plugs on all my transmissions. I found out about them because one of my pans had a rusty flange. Easy to swap fluid or do pan drops(no baths). The pans are 20-30 bucks and are the same quality as Ford ones, nice thick steel with a black powdercoat. Every other oil change I swap out Fluid(easy to know exactly how much fluid came out), and every 4th I change the filter. Every 6th gets a cooler flush.
Surprised Ford didn't put drain plugs on their Transmission pans, they actually did for U-Haul 4R70Ws, and they have a part number for that. Their lubed for life transmission is a way to have you buy a reman trans or another vehicle after 100k miles. I always look at the longest extended warranty mileage and take half of that. That is your fluid change interval if it says "lifetime"
alb12345672 Ford considers the lifetime of a vehicle to be 150k under “normal” conditions
heard powder coat coming off in some and destroying engines and transmissions.
Ouch. I replaced mine with a Dorman with drain plug too. Thank you for the heads up!@@peetky8645
My 2009 Mustang is due for a change. Thanks for the reminder.
Gosh I guess the older cars are better in ways. I know lots of people with mid 95-2005 Ford Panthers with over 300,000 miles and maybe the transmission might of been serviced a time or two, with the only complaint being occasion torque converter shudder. I believe the old Ford Tempo's automatic transmission had a "good for life transmission fluid and filter", they were great cars, the old 2.3 and 3 speed automatic.
Great video.
Great Video!!! Learned a lot. I have a 6F50 trans on my 2013 explorer. I was thinking about sucking out the 5 or 6 qts out of the dip stick under the air cleaner every 10k miles to try to keep the fluid new and clean. Do you think this is a good idea?
I have an 05 escape xlt with 232,000 miles on it. I started having shift issues around 180K and had been told at several garages not to change fluid, it will not help. I did not get an operation manual and didn't know the fluid was supposed to be changed every 30K. Against their advice and at the point of having nothing to loose I changed fluid and added Lucas transmission additive. It felt somewhat better at first and took about a week of driving, but afterword the transmission started shifting better. Changing the fluid regularly is the best thing you can do for the life of your transmission. I treated her horribly yet had such good luck overall with my 05 as my service vehicle. So much so that I just bought a 2011 limited to replace her on the road. I plan on treating this one better and am optimistic for 300K
i have been watching your posts the last 2 years as a fellow mechanic with 35 years in the trenches you have been on the nail head with your professionalism . i live in hamilton ontario this calls for the use of a 4wheel drive when you least expect it get the dredded lake effect snow in the winter transfer case is getting a workout. i saw your post about mercon v oh by the way 2007 f 150 fx4 is what i have no plug issues change these out every 40k like butter. but the question i have is about my transfer case is royal purple syncro max a good fill for this model it is shift on the fly
+Jason joncas They say it replaces mercon and XL-12 so yes they are saying it is compatible. I have never used it personally but any quality full synthetic is a good upgrade.
+FordTechMakuloco Hey I have a 2013 Ford Edge Sport with 47K miles.....do I just do a drain and fill (how many qrts do I need) ? Thanks!
Outstanding, you actually say what the problem is!
Can you tell me the problem with the Ford Taurus1996 and onwards transmission? People say they are crap but don't pin down the problem. Your insite would be appreciated.
Cheers
Great video (as usual)! I have a 2012 Ford Fusion with the 6F35 that has 83K miles. I believe trans fluid was changed once before, but not absolutely sure. Fluid looks/smells decent on white paper towel. I presume it would be "smart thinking" to change as soon as possible just to be sure? Thanks in advance!
Hi first at all thanks for your channel and very informative videos. I have a f150 EB 2013 with 40k miles and planning to keep it for at least 10 years. I got it new and always kept with all maintenances updated. They asked me for the transmission flush but i'm not sure what to do. I have different think that i learned form your channel mainly and planning to do, but I would like your opinion if not much to ask.
I change my engine oil in the dealer every 6-7k miles, should i do it by myself all synt every 5k?
At 40k what you suggest me to do. To the transmission for maintanance?
I'm definitely going to get the oil catch can, i'm between the RX or UPR, which one you think is better or easier to install?
Thanks again in advance.
Thanks for another helpful video
What fluid would you recommend for my E350 XLT Super Duty v10 6.8 ??? I have asked my local auto parts store and I get different answers.
I hope this is what just happened to my 2008 Expedition 290k miles! 5 miles from a Ford and made a slow Beeline there. Kept coming out of gear at a stop. Went in gear with a little throttle feathering, then would stay in. I was shifting from N to D at stop lights to give the a/c compressor a couple 100 more RPM on a 100f outside temp day in sunny Florida. No codes. a fairly hard 'chunk' when it would go in with elevated throttle. Ford dealer said they don't like working on Ford that are 'that old'. After some back and forth, got them to check it out. 6R75 abd 6R80 tranny parts are few and far between. Then Ford Tech Makuloco came to the rescue with this possibility.
Oh boy, 100k mile on my 6r60 with original fluid 😫 I'll change it very soon
happy Fourth of July!!! A used 2010 Ford Transit connect with 200,000 miles transmission Drives shifts good, that probably have not been serviced regularly.
If purchased will it be safe for a transmission drain refill? "if it has a drain plug"
I'm looking to start a small courier service!
I always install an inline filter at the cooler. This catches 95% of the particles and the transmission is happier for it.
I also install a transmission cooler fan even if they don't have one. As the radiator is not sufficient to cool the fluid in hot summers.
Claude Rains perfect thinking, common sense to do things for better, you are a fine smart person, my respect, have a bonito dia!!
Claude, can you provide links for the parts - filter & fan?
Where do you get the parts at
have you ever troubleshot a F150 with an intermittent vibration in the gas pedal, brake pedal? it happens usually on the highway in 6th gear at about 1100 to 2000 rpms on a slight grade. The truck is a 2010 SC 5.4 and the plugs and coil boots have been replaced. I almost think its a transmission or torque converter issue. Thanks for the awesome videos!!
I had a similar problem on my Lincoln MKZ 2008, replaced motor mounts and transmission torque strut mount, sometimes you only have to replace one of the three, good luck
I have done this all wrong, I know, but I have been lucky. I bought my 2001 F150 5.4L when it was 4 years old and had 50,000 miles on it. By time I had the time to replace the transmission fluid I had 100,000 on it. I had heard that if you didn't start out with transmission fluid changes it was better off to not mess with it. Confusing to me so I decided to take my chances, but figured that there was a transmission in my future. At 278.000 the intake manifold failed but transmission is still working. Still don't know what to think, But I believe I have been lucky so far.
I have a 2015 f150 3.5 ecoboost with 56,000 miles. Do you think is do for a transmission fluid? If so what fluid should I use and how many quarts it takes. And also for the transfer case what fluid should I use? If you could please answer my questions it would be so helpful.
Great video. Where did you get your dip stick?
Thanks! Now do a 10R80! Please!
Hi, I'm a fan on your RUclips channel. I just looking the video about the oil change on the transmission 6F35 and I just wondering how to check the right level of fluid on muy 2013 Ford Fusion titanium? Could you help me or show me how to check? Thanks for your time
Great video. You really know your stuff.
I didn't change the fluid on my 08' F-150 until 57,000 miles because the dealer recommended 60,000 miles. I didn't flush out the fluid in the torque converter. I just dropped the pan and replaced the filter and added back new fluid. I've got to say that it looked pretty clean, but I had a lot of build up on the magnet. How do you think I should service it from here forward?
Also, I bought a brand new 14' Cmax Hybrid. It has 4,000 miles on it now. It has a cvt as you probably know, so what would you advise for service on that? Never had a cvt before.
Zack Zander I would do filter and fluid every 60k on the f150 and fluid drain and fill every 60k on the cvt.
I have a 2012 F150 3.5 ecoboost with around 155,000 miles. As far as I know, the transmission fluid has never been changed. At this point, would I risk the tranny failing if I have it changed and a new filter? I know Ford recommends that it be done for my truck at 150,000. But based on what I'm hearing I may be way too late? I don't do any towing but I do have a heavy foot, if that helps.
I have a 2015 F 150 with the 5.0 and 6 speed auto transmission, the truck has 90000 miles on it, do you recommend changing the transmission fluid and filter? This would be its first transmission fluid change.
Hey Brian, I got a 6F35 in an Escape here. service transmission now warning. Slipping and no go until shut off and restart, then can only go a block. Load whining noise now. Fluid was always done at Ford every 20-30k. Any hope you think? What would you bet it is? Any quick remedy?
I have 2012 f150 with just under 60k. Is it safe to go ahead and change the fluid and filter by disconnecting the cooler line and keep adding until it turns red again? I saw another video where a guy does this by shutting the engine off when the fluid starts to slow down and then he adds more. I’m hoping it hasnt gone to long without a change.. any advice or tips for a diy’er?
As a 1st time F 150 owner I am finding your videos very educational, thank you. I'm considering purchasing a ODB 2 scanner for my 2015 F150 3.5 Turbo. I consider myself pretty handy when it comes to working on vehicles. Which scanner would you recommend for a home mechanic? My budget is around $200.
How's that thing holding up four years later?
@FordTechMakuloco, when replacing the Lead Assembly, are new solenoids needed too? or usually just clean them off?
I want to order online a shift solenoid pack for my 08 Explorer, 4.0, 2WD, Eddie Bauer, automactic. Which online parts site do you reccomend? Also ive broken some of the pan bolt heads off, whoops, how do you reccomend i remove them ? Thanks. Enjoy and appreciate your videos.
Please I need a help.. I have Ford Focus automatic 2014 model.. The gearbox is faulty so I have to replace it with another one. The problem now is I ready brought 10litres of oil yet it seem like the gearbox needs more. So am really confused now
Got a 2002 ford explorer sealed transmission 309,000 miles it shifts fine but idk when the transmission fluid was changed. My worry is if i get it changed it maybe start having issues.😬
Love Amy grant Playing in the background!! Good stuff
Hello FTM, I have a 96 Ford Ranger that I've always changed fluid and filter about every 30k miles since new. Could I just suck out some fluid from dip stick tube and replace it instead of dropping pan every time? It has low miles works fine. Thanks
I'd like to change my fluid regularly but I can't find anything on the 8F35 that's in my Transit Connect. All I know is where the drain is but there is no obvious fill like on the 6F35. Eventually I'm going to have to spend the money on the factory service manual on CD. :(
I have a 2013 Ford Escape s sport FWD 2.5 liter automatic
I have a question and the question is how many quarts of transmission fluid would i need for my vehicle and what type of transmission fluid do I need to buy. I really believe that it needs to be changed the vehicles feels like it's slipping when I back up. sometimes I feel a kick back when it switches gears to second or third and when I pull off it hesitate. It was a used car from DriveTime dealership which was a big mistake so right now I'm dealing with it but anyway lol. it had 87,000 when I bought it and now it has 114,000 on it. It's been maintenance since I got it I'm just lost with the transmission fluid on how to change it in the type of transmission fluid.
I have a 2013 fx4 and every time I put in gear forward or reverse I hear a whinnying sound the truck has 113000 on it I bought it with 110000 on it. Would it be a plugged filter sounds like it’s coming from the torque converter any ideas? Thanks
I see it being used in DIY flush's on RUclips, Can Mercon LV be used in my 5R100R transmission of my 2004 F250 SuperDuty? When it calls out for Mercon SP. Thanks. Your videos come in handy.
Yes the torqshift trans is the ONLY trans originally calling for Mercon SP that Ford officially now recommends Mercon LV for servicing and that they can be intermixed with no problems.
@FordTechMakuloco hi , my transmission is a (6F35) ford fusion 2010 6 speed and i was wondering if everyone who has that transmission should definitely change the filter and atf every 20'000 to 30'000 miles. i have troubles with leaks in the transmission and engine PTU leaks. thanks for any help you can offer
I have a Ford Escape 2014. Is it necessary change the transmission filter or only the oil? Thanks!
i have a 2011 ford mondeo "mk4" 2.3l 6speed awf21 transmission . i want to do a atf change in a shop but in my area they are not familiar with this car. i want to ask you can the filter be changed or is it inside the transmission and is there a bolt that i should take out to drain if yes does this bolt need any type of adhesive like a thread sealant? I've heard that these transmissions are very sensitive so is there anything you would like to tell me that might help and i should take in consideration when changing the fluid ??? and do you have any video on this type of transmission??
Makes me wonder what I'm up against with my 08 Explorer with 125k on it that has no record of a transmission service. I plan on taking it down and having it done Monday, just a pan drop, and filter change and refill, I won't let shops do that flush crap on my vehicles.
I have a ford transit connect xlt 2011 should I just take it to the dealership to get new fluid as the truck is used daily for work?
I wish I had seen this five years ago. Now here I am, 126000 miles and it’s going.
i have an used 2016 f150 with 101k, the filter and fluid has never been changed. should I change the filter and trans flush? what do you recommend.
What transmission fluid does a 2008 Ford Fusion SE take?
Hello I have a 2006 ford escape hybrid, transmission is eVCT that has 142,000 miles. any recommendations you can give me on it, I am going to be doing a drain and fill soon. I bought it vehicle at 130,000 miles and fluid looks red and clean. Ford service manual says oil is life of the motor, not even sure if the filter can be changed out.
I have a 2005 F250 recently the transmission was rebuilt by professional shop the truck set up for a year-and-a-half it goes into reverse fine goes into neutral fine but when it goes into drive or I'll pull it back to first gear only stays in 5th gear is that fail safe mode or should I look for 2005 F250 torque shift thanks
The 2/4 band went out in our 2007 Escape 4wd at 84K. I chose this car in part of the metal timing chain non interference engine, however I was unaware of trans problems when I bought it. Since it went out I've found many many owners experiencing the same issue. I had a remanufactured trans put in and am now leary of another failure although the trans has a three year 75K warranty on it. I've never had a trans failure with any car I've ever owned including a 1995 Jeep Cherokee V8 with over 176K on it.
What's the deal ? Are they all failing before 100K ? If I keep it what's the story on serving it at around 30K with the suction method or other draining methods seen on Utube instead of dropping the pan which is a costly dealer service procedure ?
My 2016 Fusion with the 1.5 is having the transmission fluid changed at the dealer. The service guy says only 80% of the old fluid is removed. This is my first transmission service and it has 120,000 miles on it. Is it bad for the transmission to mix the old and the new fluid like this?
awesome video and thankyou for the tip!
I have a 2011 ford edge with 57k miles. i changed the fluid once before at 24k miles but i was wonder if 2011 ford edge has changeable filter? because im planning on changing it again very soon
Arlind Yimsiriwattana No those are internal so you are stuck with a drain and fill.
Darn, thank you!
I have a 2011 6R80 and have changed the fluid twice, but Ford said they don't do filter changes on these anymore, per the Ford service protocol
Yes you want to every 60k miles.
I've got a 2006 Ford f150 with 195k miles and I have no idea what the service history is on it. I just replaced the engine following your video! Thanks for sharing your knowledge! The transmission is extremely low on transmission fluid, should I just drop the pan and do a fluid/ filter change? Or should I just add fluid and maybe some Lucas oil and pray? Thanks for any information you can provide.
I’d drop the pan and do a fluid and filter replacement. If it’s shifting fine I’d run the Mercon V. Don’t bother with the Lucas. It’s only for last resort.
thanks for the info on that! i need to get mine changed soon on my f150.
I think i had sent you a message about my 2013 f150 5.0 starting to have long cranks in cold weather. did you happen to get that message?
19deo I think so but I am just backed up right now.
I got a 2015 f150 and it has a slight shutter when coming to a stop.and also appears when letting go from brake pedal not when accelerating though, any idea what might be causing that?
I have a 2011 f150 ecoboost with 137000 miles do you recommend changing at this point? Or is it too late?
I have a 2p013 escape SEL with 48k should I change the fluid it seems to be shifting a little hard between 1st and 2nd gear
Hey Brian, I have my 2013 f150 and I did my first fluid change at 30k miles like you recommended. I'm at 60k miles now and about to do my second one. What about the differential though, when should I Change the fluid on that? I do a little towing once every few months but not much
Yes definitely at 60k I did
I need your help with this one. 07 explorer 4.6 6R60 4x4 has a noise in bellhouing area sounds like flywheel hitting on spacer shield. Or thransmission pump. So We pull Trans out didn't find any problem in it. Change torque converter and noise still there. I notice crank shaft has 8 thousands of play back and forth. Have run across this?
FordTechMakuloco Your videos are extremely informative!
What would be the best course of action for a 2015 or newer Ford Focus 5 speed manual transmission? What is the model number of the 2L 5 speed manual transmission?
I currently have a 2002 2L Zetec with 266k KMs on it and I only changed the fluid once at 100k KM. It still shifts VERY well. Original clutch as well.
+surgeon1919 If you have the 5 speed it is the same MTX75 as always I would do fluid changes on those every 60k.
FordTechMakuloco Thanks for the info. I'm waiting for the 2016 Focus to come out so I can get it with Sync 3 (QNX). I also don't want an auto transmission. My MTX75 has been flawless so I'm happy Ford has kept it alive!
hi fordtechmakuloco, i have a 2011 ford f150 reg cab, 5.0L, when the truck shifts gears to 1000 RPM, I think it changes gear 1rs to 2nd, it does strongly, you think my transmission is damaged? thank you ! and : saludos desde mexico
mi camioneta hace lo mismo, encontraste la solución a tu problema?
I wonder if all Ford dealer techs are as competent and knowledgeable as you are. Somehow I always feel like I'm walking into a lion's den when I sit in front of a service writer and never get to speak to a Ford tech.
Ford's I've owned, Lincoln LS, Taurus, Crown Vic, Freestyle.
Doubtful they are nearly as proficient as thos man. The problem with dealerships is that is where most newly certified techs go to work...so they use it as "school". There is nothing wrong with that if there are more seasons techs in the shop watching over them. It's a crapshoot
2013 ford edge 3.5 i dont know which trans. Just did a drain and replace fluid, roughly 5 to 6 qts. Engine was hot. When finished the rest drive was horrible, would not shift out of 1st. Double checked level, added another qt, test drive 2 and 3 same thing, no shift. Let sit for 15 minutes now it shifts perfect ! What is going on ? Thermal valve ?
Any help please!!!! C6 trans automatic, put in D takes off in 2nd. Drop to 1 locks back tires like park ???? Changed filter , fluid, and flushed. No help!!! Any ideas ?
My old 99 Taurus I changed the transmission fluid and filter every 30,000 miles and the transmission was still going at 250,000 miles and a 01 escape with manual transmission and we changed it at regularly interval and the transmission was still going at 315,000 miles. I don't understand why Ford changed the maintenance intervals on these newer cars. We now have a 2016 edge and we changed the fluid at 92,000 miles because I don't feel comfortable waiting till 150,000 miles.
I have a FORD F150 5.0 2011 that never have changed the transmission fluid and filter, my truck have 65.000 miles on it, i want to be served soon, whats your opinion? drain and fill and filter's change? flush? help me.
I am about to purchase a 2012 fusion se with the 14 motor from my job. It currently has 52,000 miles. i'd guess the miles are about 85 - 90% highway. Do you know what transmission is in it? 6F35? I will be driving this car a lot as i'm a I.T. field tech.
Is it safe to assume I should be doing the transmission fluid change when I get the car, and every 30,000? Mercon LV?
Also I'm pretty sure it hasn't been done yet, would you consider this a problem?
PS i've spent all day watching your videos. I love watching smart people talk about stuff they know. Thank you.
e mikey A 2012 has the 6f35 yes and you should do the fluid change as specified in my video as soon as you get it. At 52k for the first change I don't think it would be a problem at all.
I bought a 14 f150 5.0 with the 6r80 trans n 138k. I don't think the trans has been serviced Any way to observe the fluid or the finger test ?
Hi there, I have a 2005 Ford 500. It feels like it is being rear ened when your speed gets to sixty. Help. It drops into gear hard. Could it be a silinoid
I bought a 2009 Ford F-150 with a 6R80 still has torque converter shudder after the torque converter was replaced. What else could be the problem?
I just purchased a 2012 F150 with the 6R80 with 43,000K I will be changing the fluid in that ASAP with the unknown history of service. My 2010 Escape with 62,000K Had a partial drain and refill last year but I think I may buy a case of Mercon LV and do 4 drain and refills on it to make sure I get as much as possible out of it. The truck I may have the dealer do as it is a PITA to check the fluid level. I imagine I will have to argue with them about the service interval though. The Escape likes to shift hard when cold and it has the latest software installed in it according to my Dealer.
cjones4512 After the fluid change I would have them rest the trans adaptive shift tables also.
Thanks for the tip, I will have them do that.
My 2012 Fusion with the 6-speed manual recommends the fluid change at 150K miles, which seems impossible. Unless you always NEVER miss a shift and stay at 65MPH on the highway, maybe. I don't think under mixed city/hwy driving the fluid would last that long. It has almost 59K miles now (without issue) and considering changing it very soon for 3 reasons: unintentional missed shifts, unintentional slow clutch release after shifting, and the magnet can't hold the metal shavings from missed shifts forever.
***** Yes change it soon.
How do you know if you have a broken band in my 2002 Ford Explorer 4.6
What is your take on a trans flush vs a pan drop servicing if there is only a strainer in the pan. Also, does a '04 Crown Vic have a trans filter or strainer and is there still a drain plug on the Crown Vic torque converter. Thanks for the great vids!
+tim jones An 04 may or may not have a drain plug they are not that common to have one. I would just perform a flush on a crown vic as the fluid additive package is more general. If the filter has not been changed in 60k though I would do a pan drop.
I have a 2014 Ford Taurus Sel bought it used with 40,000 miles not sure if I have a sealed transmission .....Please help I would really appreciate it
my 06 6.0 super duty transmission is slipping.
can over filling cause this?
I have a 2014 ford f150 4x4 ecoboost and was wondering if it would be ok to install a magnetic drain plug to catch some of the metal shaving from the transmisssion. If its ok to do so where would be th best place on the pan to put it ?
catfish500mark You already have a huge magnet in the trans to catch all the shavings.
Hello Sir. I have a 2007 Focus with 35000 miles on got it brand new, and now with about 37000 miles on it it has a trans flare every cold start going from 2nd to 3rd but only dose it "once every cold start" What could this be any help would be great. Thanks for your time.
+Trent Wentworth no solenoids are responsible for the 2-3 shift. We had a real problem with these having piston seal issues in the direct clutch. I would suspect that over the end cover wear. That usually comes later.
+FordTechMakuloco can the end cover sealing rings just be replaced. without taking the complete transmission apart. so you don't feel this is a piston server board issue just the end cover sealing rings or did I read that incorrectly thank you so much for your time
Thanks for the informational video. I just bought a 2010 Ford F150 4x4 stx with 109,000 miles. I looked up what type of transmission fluid I should use and it said Mercon SP, is that correct or should I be using Mercon LV?
K. Powell there was a dipstick and owners manual misprint that year all 6r80 transmissions use Mercon LV
Thanks for sharing your knowledge with me, next time I changed it out I will use Mercon LV.
I have a question. need some help. getting a P0978 code on a 2007 Lincoln MKZ
2011 Explorer, if not using a flushing machine and just using drain and refill will I be able to get all the old Mercon LV out of the transmission in one drain? Will it require multiple drain and refills? What's your procedure for the DIY'er since the 6F55 doesn't have a serviceable filter. Additionally, do you suggest doing the drain and fill while the transmission and engine is hot or just drain it cold and measure the amount that drain and refill with room temperature Mercon LV?
+Kevin Mason I would follow my 6f35 video for the procedure it is very similar. Technically it take about 3 drain and fills to make it all new but if you change it every 30k you can just change it once. The final fluid level check is done hot idle.
+FordTechMakuloco, I watched your 6F35 video. Vehicle has 68k on it so I want to swap all the fluid. I'm willing to do the 3 drain and fills. My only question is for full fluid replacement can I just do the start and run for 3 mins, and move the into each gear position for engagement, and then drain again. then repeat this 3 times. i.e. Is this going to release/cycle all the fluid out of the torque converters, etc.?
OR
Do I have to fill with say 4+ qts. of fluid, drive to operating temp, then drain/fill 4+ qts, then drive to operating temp, then drain/fill 4+ qts.
I would swap 4qts at a time and drive like you say to work the fluid out of the valve body etc.
Does the 6f55 in the SHO have a "servicable" filter? My dealer wants me to do the BG transmission service/flush. BG tends to have the best services around, should I do it?
jtoddk98 No only Mercon LV for sure drain and fill no filter for servicing.
I have 120k miles on my 2014 Ford Explorer, seems to shift fine but if fluid is black should I still replace fluid and filter!? 150k miles feels way tooo long and 120k miles snuck up on me.. I have no clue what to do now. Leave it alone or change??! Help! Haha
Have 2008 Ford Mustang 145K should I change it?
could you do a video on taking a cd4e case apart? that would cover a lot of fords
Chad Ross I would but the cd4e is pretty reliable and will be hard to come by.
FordTechMakuloco if I have a very slight slip from 2nd-3rd in my 06’ Escape 3.0 would you recommend Lucas stop slip? I’ve heard a lot of good things about it but and still hesitant to add any since the slip isn’t bad at all
wow, how does the 6f35 transmission work?
I have a gas powered f250 that I plow my yard with. It has 45,000 on it. I will have the transmission serviced soon. Are there any special issues to be concerned with regarding the transfer case I should be aware of?
Yes I would change the fluid also at this mileage. See my new video on this specifically so they don't put the wrong fluid in it!
Is a drain and fill cold okay or should you get it hot first? I have a 2012 escape 52000 miles.
And Is there a serviceable filter on this trans? I bought it with 50000 miles on it. Don't know if trans was serviced before but I doubt it.
Lee Dress No filter and warm to hot is best for flow just like engine oil.
I see youre using the term "change the fluid", yet in recent years there's been a trend towards "flush the fluid". Any preference?
srercrcr Mercon LV SP etc all have specific additives you don't want them mixing theses additives in the machines giving you a hodge podge mix of different fluids and additves. On mercon or mercon V flush, all the rest drop pan clean it up really well extend the drain and replace the filter is best in my opinion.
6F50 has been very reliable except a few sensor and valve body issues.
How often should I service the new 10 speed in f150?
changed the trans fluid in my 121,000 mile 05 Escape last year when I replaced the cooler return line after it started leaking, old fluid was just a little darker pink/red than new just like when I bought it at 102k , but idk how often it was changed before, plug was clean, suspected an issue with the torque converter for a while because of mild shudder just past 30mph, Ford dealer said it was U-joints/drive shaft and replaced under a used car warranty I bought with the car, didn't fix the issue and warranty expired by the time they completed installing the new drive shafts (supposedly on a long backorder), trans recently started slipping at slow speed, and engine vibration in Drive at stoplights, think stator clutch broke (or pump failed?) today when I tried to back out of my parking spot, won't move forward or neutral either, so can I just replace the torque converter (and pump if it's also failed)? can the shop open the trans and replace the filter too? would replacing the filter cost much extra? $1k-$1.5k repair makes sense, $3k+ for new reman trans doesn't because my Escape is only worth $4k even though it's in very good to excellent condition
thanks for all of your vids btw!
...I don't remember the 4F20/27E (really a Jatco box) being THAT problematic? The 6F35's and CD4E are MUCH more problematic anecdotally. They put the E's in Villagers and 1st gen Transit Connects, which considering its a light duty unit, wasn't designed to take that level of strain. Out of curiosity, do you have terribly much insight to bestow on us more Orphan FoMoCo owners? Villagers (mine), Contour/Mystiques, and Probes? Or are they're just so few left no one bothers fixing them.
They are not the worst trans for sure but there are plenty of common issues on these such as-
What we have seen is shredded 2-4 servo, rough bore 2-4 servo, blown gaskets, solenoids at times, now servo bore problems, end cover wear, direct drum issues the list goes on.
Michael Luscher No not much info on those we just don't see them.
I drive a 2012 Ford Explorer with 41600 miles. I purchased it brand new with 5 miles and I'm on the only owner. Do you recommend a fluid change?
Jeremy Lee A drain and fill of Mercon LV yes
