Transmission Fluid Change In 24 Years! How Bad Does it Look? F-150

  • Some folks say not to change the automatic transmission fluid on an older high mileage vehicle like this 1997 Ford F150 with 138K original miles. Changing the fluid and flushing the fluid are two different things. Flushing can push particles of contamination into small orifices and clog them which can cause transmission failure. Draining the old fluid and replacing it with a new filter is more gradual and tends to leave the bad stuff undisturbed. Fresh fluid has properties that improve lubrication and also help to maintain the proper fluid pressure necessary for smooth shifting. This video shows what the first transmission fluid change in 24 years on an Ford F150 transmission. Feel free to leave a comment or question down belowand if you get a chance smash the like button. @@cedricmendoza1305 I had a used 2002 Tacoma but didn't own it long enough to change the transmission fluid. Those are great trucks. It's a Toyota and they are very robust. I would look at it like this: if the damage is already done, then it's a matter of time before it fails, and the new fluid would just speed that along. New fluid is not going to ruin the transmission, it just reveals the wear already in it. Better for it to go when it's in the shop than on the road and leave you having to pay for a tow, and your loss of time, stress of it all, etc. Also, know that the old fluid is only going to get more abrasive if you don't change it, too, which would mean continually increased wear. I would definitely NOT do a transmission flush, but a drop and fill with a transmission filter change to start. I follow a seasoned mechanic who says to keep the old fluid that gets drained out in a clean container when you do the drop and fill. IF by chance the drop and fill causes slipping, drain that new fluid out and replace it with the old fluid and that should stop the slipping. I have read about a guy who had a fleet of Ford work vans. He said he did drop and fills as late as 250k miles on them with no issues. I think it also depends on how hard the vehicles were used and abused. If your Tacoma was driven mostly without hauling or towing and on the highway, then that's easy on the transmission and I'd feel more confident about changing it. If it was used to haul heavy or tow heavy daily and up and down hills and such, then you would have more of a chance that it's worn out and would need replacing. What's the history of your Tacoma?

      @@cedricmendoza1305 that's good news on the previous owner! I'd feel more comfortable doing it then. I think you'll be successful with a drop and fill, it's the flushing that knocks crud loose and that crud makes its way into and stops up the passages/channels and that causes overheating and failure. When you do that drop and fill, the tranny has time to slowly dissolve the cruddy deposits so that they don't break off and clog (as I understand it). I've done a lot of research on it and that seems to be the consensus. Good luck, bud!

    Good video. Simple and Straitforword.
    FWIW:
    I cut the heads off of 4 pan bolts that are a little longer than the originals and round off the cut ends. I then cut slots into the rounded ends for a screw driver and thread them into the 4 corners of the case. This keeps the gasket aligned as I put the pan back up. The modified bolts sleep in my 'Odds and Ends' plastic case until needed again.
    I also disconnect the cooling lines at the radiator and drain the torque coverter.
    If replacing all that fluid causes slippage, it simply means I was headed for an overhaul soon anyway.
    Again, Good Video......

    You might do a flush. As good as that pan looked, I wouldn't be afraid to do a full fluid exchange on it. I've never had trouble before. Whenever I buy a used vehicle, the first thing I do, is change ALL the fluids. That includes the power steering, flushing the brake lines, as well as the engine oil, transmission fluid, differential (s) oil and even the transfer case.(if FWD) I also flush the coolant, especially, if it looks brown.

    Hey, Glen! It's crazy !
    I am in a similar situation. I am the only owner of a 1998 Camry LE 4-cylinder, which I got brand new in '97. The car is currently 26 years old with 136,000 miles, and I never ever changed the transmission fluid nor the differential. As of late, when i put the car in drive, it reverses, and other times when it's in drive, the car takes a full minute before it moves, even when I press the gas pedal,it stays in motion. And when the car does drive, it makes a whining noise when I accelerate.
    Lots of sources say not to change the fluid because of the age and mileage, but my mechanic says I should change it, even though I never did this service before. All I would do is drain and fill the ATF and differential. I wouldn't flush it, just drain and fill. I am lost on what I should do .
    Some say nothing might not get done if I change the fluid because the transmission is done, but I have no idea .

    • @ozzstars_cars
      @ozzstars_cars  5 месяцев назад

      @mc.ashlandfelix7140 fluid is cheap compared to expensive transmissions. I did a second fluid change on the truck in the video and it shifts even smoother now, like it had years ago.

      @@ozzstars_cars I appreciate it, Glen! I was just unsure because many people and techs say if I do it, the slipping would get worst because I never did it before. Do you agree with that? The car is almost 30 years old with over 100K miles. And if I do this service, should I have my mechanic drain and fill it twice, or should I have him do that once?
      He told me if we go along with the process that I should bring 8 quarts of fluid, which I do not understand why because the transmission drain and fill capacity is 2.6 quarts and the differential capacity is 1.7 quarts .

    • @ozzstars_cars
      @ozzstars_cars  5 месяцев назад

    How can the oil still lubricate the gears? You should of used the cooler lines to pump it out so the pan will be empty when you remove it. You can try at 205 reseal for that leaking seal. You only got out like 40% of the old stuff opening the pan if you use the cooler line you can remove fluid and add new fluid until its clear red otherwise their is still old crap in their. Don't drop the pan every 1k just use the cooler line.
