He probably means because the bone courtiers in the ruins drop torch, though most stress enemies drop torch so idk. Though I tend to take 8 torches for a short unless I'm running a crusader.
Not only the caretaker does this, the heroes also do it sometimes, if you look at 1:08 one of the houndmasters becomes a monster until he puts the cursor on him.
One amendment I’d make about choosing missions, especially for new players, is about prioritising: yeah keeping an eye on the best trinkets is always useful (you’ll always be missing a few of the best ones even late into the game) but don’t take a mission above your level because you see a good one!! Seriously he kinda glazed over how big a difference going to a dungeon above your characters levels is, so even if you see a great trinket early on, if it’s a veteran mission and your party is still below level 3 you are seriously risking losing characters! (Don’t even think about those champion missions...) the same goes for your equipment and skill levels; the only difference levelling up makes is the amount of stress a character takes and their resistance to status effects, so unless you’ve levelled their other stuff in the towns they’re still gonna get mulched if you take them on a higher level mission, even if their level is high. Therefore I’d suggest keeping track of the heirlooms you need to start upgrading as soon as you get a good selection of teams. Trinkets are very useful, but even the best ones won’t save you from a dungeon you’re too low level for (and you risk losing them if characters die with them equipped) Overconfidence doesn’t just apply to battle, but to your preparation as well...
So much good information! Thank you for putting this together, I've been playing through this since it's been in my backlog for so long. I can't believe I put it off for so long! Such a fun game!
I forget how cute this guy is every time I periodically come to watch his guides. Also, what mod are you using that shows the heirloom icons next to the areas on the quest selection screen?
Totally missed this game and am only now trying it out. I guess I got overconfident after my first run and my second run ended with my entire party wiped. Third run…party wipe. Now I’m addicted.
I noticed that your UI shows an actual icon for crests, busts, deeds, and portraits for each different dungeon on the Dungeon Selection screen. Is that a mod? If so, which one? @14:48
I'm not sure what that is myself. However I just got into this game and I assume these do not exist anymore. The reason being they thankfully mixed up the heirloom rewards. Before each of the 4 areas had one heirloom type as a reward which is silly. I'm guessing those icons are outdated official content, or an outdated UI mod. Or it could be specifically for displaying boss fight rewards. However I believe the icons match the original reward mechanic for each area.
Ricky Morgan I personally building the ones that require only crests first because these resources come by easily while I use the other resources for upgrading the buildings
sometimes when I'm watching your videos I turn up the volume to like 40% with earbuds only to have my eardrums completely destroyed by something like a shitty Kroger ad
HELP! This new disease that is spreading between characters that force them to drink blood is killing me. Every single one of my characters are infected and it's a very big drag. Is it supposed to be this cumbersome or can you cure it somehow?!
You can do runs named gather the blood to make sure your heroes dont die Its like malaria in far cry 2 where the character had to keep some pills at all times just to be sure There is a chance that the disease will spread in Hamlet too If you have a cursed hero in the Tavern and one healthy there is a chance that the healthy guy gets infected too, especially if they share the same section For example if they are both gambling So its good to have the cursed ones in the tavern and the healthy ones in the abbey, or the opposite Same for the sanitarium And yes there is a cure There is a boss called The Fanatic One of the most epic bosses in the game If you kill him you get some vials with the cure Otherwise you have to beat all the bosses in the courtyard And when you are buying provisions check the left side, next of the caretaker, it says how many heroes are "wasting" If there is no blood in the hamlet they will die, on the other hand if you leave some blood on the provisions menu instead of taking it all with you then the caretaker will (bear this) take care (duh) of those heroes so that you won't find them dead when you return A VERY interesting concept in general I liked it a lot, it actually makes the game stressful and makes you worry more about your heroes
FilthyRobot How should I build my crusader if I want him to tank the hits and deal damage and also attack multiple targets with his scroll and how should i build my vessens or faith ladies plague docter and helliin and leper
Im having such a hard time enjoying this game. I dont understand the mechanics and is way too difficult. Ive played Dark Souls and Sekiro. I normally dont mind difficult games. But this one is a wholenother level
super irritating how you consistantly remind the viewer you dont need to do bosses. heard you the first five times champ. you don't have to play the game at all either. anyone who skips the bosses is robbing themselves of content for zero purpose.

What does he mean by "items"? Trinkets or upgrade material?
Short dungeon: 8 food, 6 torches, 2 shovels, 1-2 rest
Medium dungeon: 20 food, 14 torches, 3-4 shovels, 2-3 rest
Long dungeon: 28 food, 20 torches, 4-6 shovels, 2-3 rest
Cenilvap what does "1-2 rest" mean
Nate Freeman It means other items.
no 10 torches for short expecially in the ruins
albeto ferro leba Why would the ruins change anything? I find 6 to be the best amount

28:03 While buying provisions, the Caretaker flashes into a monster form a few times. Anyone else notice this?
It often happen after you finish the first Darkest Dungeon quest, our beloved Ancestor would say you begin to see things as they truly are.
Not only the caretaker does this, the heroes also do it sometimes, if you look at 1:08 one of the houndmasters becomes a monster until he puts the cursor on him.
i suppose its a metaphor, as he makes so much money sending heroes to their deaths. Maybe he is the real monster.
Great, now i lost my entire sleep for a day😀

Great guide. As a new player just starting out in the game. I found this guide extremely informative. Thanks for taking the time to make it.
So much good information! Thank you for putting this together, I've been playing through this since it's been in my backlog for so long. I can't believe I put it off for so long! Such a fun game!
I've watched a half dozen DD videos and your pair of video's finally gave me the information that changed the game for me.
Loved this :) Thanks so much for all the effort you put into these.
Short: 2 Food Checks, 6 Torches, 2 Shovels
Medium: 3 Food Checks + 1 Feast, 14 Torches, 3~4 Shovels
Long: 5 Food Checks + 1 Feast, 20 Torches, 4~6 Shovels
Thank you
At a glace, I thought the title was "Filthy town management". Like damn, that's a little harsh lol
Will you ever do a video on some good party compositions? if you already talk about it somewhere could you direct me to said video?
Never knew Andy Robertson plays Darkest Dungeon
Anyone who keeps Reynald and Dismas til the end of the game is a legend!
8 years later an i appreciate this as a new player
Special items (herbs, holy water etc.)
Short 1-2
Medium 2-3
Long 2-3
I forget how cute this guy is every time I periodically come to watch his guides.
Also, what mod are you using that shows the heirloom icons next to the areas on the quest selection screen?
Great video! Thanks for the advice! This improved my game quality and fun a lot!
Totally missed this game and am only now trying it out. I guess I got overconfident after my first run and my second run ended with my entire party wiped. Third run…party wipe. Now I’m addicted.
32:46 What hero is that thing on the bottom?
+Ryan Conway Highwayman. The icon change seems to randomly happen when you've been on at least one expedition to the Darkest Dungeon (I think).
what character was SpadeMate in the video?
Houndmaster
I noticed that your UI shows an actual icon for crests, busts, deeds, and portraits for each different dungeon on the Dungeon Selection screen. Is that a mod? If so, which one? @14:48

thanks for the vid man I might come back to the game, i never beat a darkest despite numerous runs
This guy actually reddited his thumbnail with the flagellant hero
Forsen's MOTD I noticed that I thought he had crimson court early
What about blueprints and new buildings? Which ones should we build first?
Ricky Morgan
I personally building the ones that require only crests first because these resources come by easily while I use the other resources for upgrading the buildings
0:51 wtf that vestal?
Anyone else realise that this guy has the Flagellant in the thumbnail?
Got this on PS4.
This games great
very helpful thanks for posting this!
Now this is awesome, Cheers filthy!!!
18:24 for Provisions
What does it mean if there is a question mark next to the name of the character? He cannot be found?
Throstle They're unavailable for the week (essentially they aren't usable for one mission and are just taking up a roster slot)
What do you level first in the Blacksmith: Amor or Attack? (If you don't have the deeds to upgrade both at the same time.)
Attack.
sometimes when I'm watching your videos I turn up the volume to like 40% with earbuds only to have my eardrums completely destroyed by something like a shitty Kroger ad
HELP!
This new disease that is spreading between characters that force them to drink blood is killing me. Every single one of my characters are infected and it's a very big drag.
Is it supposed to be this cumbersome or can you cure it somehow?!
You need to beat the new content area to cure it. And yes, if you don't deal with it in a timely manner it becomes a really big deal.
FilthyRobot do you mean the courtyard?
DuraheLL yeah the courtyard
You can do runs named gather the blood to make sure your heroes dont die
Its like malaria in far cry 2 where the character had to keep some pills at all times just to be sure
There is a chance that the disease will spread in Hamlet too
If you have a cursed hero in the Tavern and one healthy there is a chance that the healthy guy gets infected too, especially if they share the same section
For example if they are both gambling
So its good to have the cursed ones in the tavern and the healthy ones in the abbey, or the opposite
Same for the sanitarium
And yes there is a cure
There is a boss called The Fanatic
One of the most epic bosses in the game
If you kill him you get some vials with the cure
Otherwise you have to beat all the bosses in the courtyard
And when you are buying provisions check the left side, next of the caretaker, it says how many heroes are "wasting"
If there is no blood in the hamlet they will die, on the other hand if you leave some blood on the provisions menu instead of taking it all with you then the caretaker will (bear this) take care (duh) of those heroes so that you won't find them dead when you return
A VERY interesting concept in general
I liked it a lot, it actually makes the game stressful and makes you worry more about your heroes
question, how can a robot be filthy....
haven't you seen Wall-E? filthy as shit
Demo Underrated comment
Wall-E Antiquarian skin when?
Thank you Filthy!. Going to by this game on The steam summer sale.
My pleasure, it was a super fun game to play through a few times.
FilthyRobot How should I build my crusader if I want him to tank the hits and deal damage and also attack multiple targets with his scroll and how should i build my vessens or faith ladies plague docter and helliin and leper
MOST EXCELLENT!
This is great

Damn this guy is really cute.
Ayy.
Im having such a hard time enjoying this game. I dont understand the mechanics and is way too difficult. Ive played Dark Souls and Sekiro. I normally dont mind difficult games. But this one is a wholenother level
It's a different type of difficult yes
I wish there were transcripts for these videos. I can read fast but I can't sit through a video just listening to someone talkzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz...
Greetings. Would you like to test a game I made called Strayspells?
Ive fell asleep everytime Ive tried to watch this video
might be narcolepsy
autism or adderal?
dont say kork when its quirk
how about not starting beginners guide on level 6 units every single guide?
The content we cover is is totally independent of the hero levels.
super irritating how you consistantly remind the viewer you dont need to do bosses. heard you the first five times champ. you don't have to play the game at all either. anyone who skips the bosses is robbing themselves of content for zero purpose.
Stygian/bm will do that to you, particularly if you do runs without vestals, torches, stress healing, etc.
