When I first started getting into electronics around 2013, the Gameboy was my ambassador to that world. This video showed me that you can take old, junk consoles and make it something that you’re proud to own. Now that I’m 19, I have a job as a web developer and computer technician, and I’ve been working with electronics for several years. I partially have this video to thank for leading me down this path. So thank you, random guy on RUclips, for inspiring the next 7 years of my life and beyond.
Very nice repairs. I find fixing hand held systems much more relaxing than working on consoles. I think it is the fact that once I open the case I can see most everything.
As a Game Boy fan and a member of small Polish Game Boy Scene I must say that this video makes me happy :) Thanks for saving two of these fantastic consoles from the prison of trash :) And thanks for teaching us methods which will aid our quest for ressurecting as many of them as possible :) Greetings from GBforever Polish scene :)
It made me happy to see them clean like that again. The grime is basically skin and sweat over all the years. I always clean my old joypads and they work better too. Right, I'm definitely gonna try something like this when I get chance. Gameboy fixing and modding is something I've always wanted to do.
Just bought a gameboy lot that came with a dead original gameboy. I soldered the power switch like you showed and now it works! Best thing is the guy just threw it in the lot for free cause he figured it was completely broken.
I was missing screws for a gameboy micro I repaired, so I used screws from the inside of a ds battery tray and they worked like a charm. Great video btw luke
Every time I watch one of your repair videos, I just want to go and fetch some faulty gameboys so that I can try and fix them. Thanks a lot and keep up the good work! =)
Nice vid. Just a few comments about the soldering job. First, I recommend removing the old solder because if the new solder does not mix well with the old, then down the road you may end up with the same issues again. Flux can also help if you insist on leaving the old solder in place (and comes off easily with rubbing alcohol). Flux will also help prevent shorts. The two pins to the side of the power switch are just to affix the metal "cage" of the power switch to the mono.
All I can say is patients of a saint, you wouldn't let em just die which is one of your strongest trates. Well done Luke I really enjoy watching your videos, keep em coming.
I am uploading a DDR video now actually as well hahaha. Super multitasking on my end, but that stuff was recorded on Friday, going to be playing more on Tuesday. These videos have been a huge help with some other things on my end (like the board repairs with soldering+flux) so I really appreciate you uploading everything. Keep up the great work dood! :)
You got lucky with your GBC speaker. I recently purchased one on eBay, which worked perfectly, except for the speaker. I opened it up, and the speaker came out...in three pieces.
djmckillertom As long as they have a standard headphone plug, the earpods should work just fine, as long as you don't mind not having the gbc speaker. And I would just replace the speaker. You can get one with a working speaker on ebay, but it's cheaper just to replace the speaker.
Just think of all those poor gameboys that have ended up getting thrown away when a bit of love could have brought them back to life ! Great vid as always Luke :-)
Don't know why but I like the pink color on that GB pocket a lot!! nice vid Luke I wish I had all your knowledge on repairing game consoles. Greetings from Mexico!
Thanks for the video... I just grabbed a Game boy pocket in a bunch of stuff I got for $15 but, it does nothing at all with new batteries and the battery compartment looks new.... so thanks, I'll give this a shot..
It is really unnecessary but they are super duper cheap to get online, they're like 3 bucks, they are so cheap to the point where they don't need the special screws, probably one of the reasons they are less prevalent in newer consoles.
Solder reflow eh? I was thinking of fixing a gameboy pocket I scored for $3.50 usd while traveling abroad. (coz seemed broken) I didn't have any luck with batteries, but when I powered thru a wall adapter I got a faint view of the logo! I figured... Hey! Maybe not completely broken after all! Then I found your video which surprised me coz it was right under my nose! Coz I've done that to ps3's, never figured on a old game boy since they don't get really hot? Idk, but I'll give you credit for helping save another gameboy!
I was just thinking to myself "it would be great if lukemorse uploaded a nice long repair video so I can kill some time while getting 1000G in this 360 game". I go to the homepage, freshly uploaded video from lukemorse. My prayers were answered! :P
Way to go Luke! Now some little boy and girl can have a set of blue and pink Game Boys to entertain them while mom and dad argue on a road trip! Yeehaw! :)
so good to see videos like this luke! love seeing dead game stuff come back alive, wish I could do what you do. I have a question for you, what did you use to clean the battery corrosion on the color?
Awesome video Luke , Im having trouble with some repairs myself atm . I have 2 Atari 7800 controllers that are not working , and tried everything . But ill keep at them lol
I've always been curious, according to the internet, the chips are still there in the DS and GameBoy Micro to make them backwards compatible with Gameboy Color games, but I've never seen anyone try to hook the hardware back up.
I disassembled a DMG and the plastic shafts that the screws screw into are cracked, and will no longer hold the screws that fasten the front and back together, any ideas? Great Video. Thanx for uploading.
I just had my 33rd birthday on Tuesday March 5th 2019 and I got a lot more I Tunes Cards So that way On March 20th 2019 I will have plenty of I Tunes Store Credit to get me through another month and with RUclips premium I have no more ad’s and if I put my Phone on sleep mode I can still hear the Audio playing Because without RUclips premium the RUclips Audio would stop. I love the gameboy Repair From this Guy Luke Because he reminds me of my birthday Luke.
you seem fluent in how to repair stuff. is there any way to fix the contacts to a battery compartment? i recently bought this plug 'n play intelevision thing from a resale shop, but the batteries inside were corroded. i put fresh batteries in it, abd the little light that tells you it's on won't light up.
Hi Luke! How did you fix the problem with the start button not working? I've got the same problem with my pc engine GT and it pisses me off! Thanks for your vids too!
I've got a gameboy pocket that basically instantly dies when I turn it on. Red LED light illuminates for a second before fading out. I can even hear the "chime" before it shuts off. Happens no matter what batteries I use. I have already tried soldering the parts around the on/off switch like in your video. Haven't tried anything else. Any ideas?
MikeCollectsVideoGames, I know it's a late reply here, but sometimes the connections inside the switch get all gunky and rusty. A bit of contact cleaner and switching it on and off repeatedly for s few minutes should help.
Hey Luke have you make a vid telling a little about the story of how you ended up in Japan? I would like to hear it, i'm planning on moving to Japan my self and I would like to hear your experience.
Hi nice video. Once i had also a GBC with a no sound problem. I fixed it to connect the speaker to the headphone jack pins. A bit simple but it works ;)
Hey Luke! Are there any Gameboy fixing/modding videos upcoming from you? You explain the process quite well, and I think I just have to revive the power switch of my GBC. Did you ever add audio jack port to GBA SPs? I'm a bit afraid to start on my 101 model.
luke my n64 cart (banjo kazooie) has rust at the bottom, not on the cart but the metal connects that link to the n64, im worried as rust will spread to the n64? and how could i fix this without opening or do i have to open the cart??? plz reply thx!!
Luke I have a question about the Game Boy Pocket. I have an NSTC U clear Game Boy Pocket and it does not have the red battery light. I know these are the first models, but are they more rare than the second? This is the only one iv'e seen without a light.
What is that weird yellow stuff in it? Like glue or something? I hope I didn't mess up by trying to clean is off with a cotton swab and some alcohol, I thought it was soda or something.
I have a Gameboy Pocket that has no sound through the speaker OR the headphone jack. Any idea what this might be? The speaker was replaced. Someone said something about the "pot"? Let me know if you have any advice! Thanks!
Hi. How do you fix Game Boys that have weak sound? Is that the speaker or some resistor or capacitor issue? Also how do you fix a shoulder button on an AGS-101 SP. Thank you. God bless. Rev. 21:4
hi, i have a problem please help me, i have a pokemon edition gameboy color, it just stopped working when i was playing adventure island, i was playing, i paused the game, put the gbc on the table, went to the kitchen to drink some water, and when i came back it was turned off, and since then it won't turn on at all please help me

You really have a passion for this Luke, much respect. Bringing them back from that coma.
just wanted to thank you for these videos, i have been able to resurrect about 15 old gameboy pockets that were broken!
Very nice repairs. I find fixing hand held systems much more relaxing than working on consoles. I think it is the fact that once I open the case I can see most everything.

Beautiful man, resurrecting old consoles always brings me joy

Right, I'm definitely gonna try something like this when I get chance. Gameboy fixing and modding is something I've always wanted to do.
I love these videos where you go through the different stages of repair their great keep up the great work Luke
love seeing these old guys brought back to life
Just bought a gameboy lot that came with a dead original gameboy. I soldered the power switch like you showed and now it works! Best thing is the guy just threw it in the lot for free cause he figured it was completely broken.

You got lucky with your GBC speaker. I recently purchased one on eBay, which worked perfectly, except for the speaker. I opened it up, and the speaker came out...in three pieces.
+ChozoSR388 Yeah the speakers on the GB and GBC had very thin diaphragms inside them. Moisture easily gets trapped in them and ruins them.
The nice thing is that it's not that difficult of a repair job. A little soldering, and a fresh speaker, and it's back to close to brand new.
djmckillertom As long as they have a standard headphone plug, the earpods should work just fine, as long as you don't mind not having the gbc speaker. And I would just replace the speaker. You can get one with a working speaker on ebay, but it's cheaper just to replace the speaker.

Love how you are soldering on carpet. :3
hey luke, please do more of these repair videos, absolutely loving them!
Don't know why but I like the pink color on that GB pocket a lot!! nice vid Luke I wish I had all your knowledge on repairing game consoles. Greetings from Mexico!
Great job Luke! Now that I remember, my Gameboy Color needs some replacement rubbers for the buttons.
Nice work on those GBs man. Rockman World 3 sounds awesome on that gb color. Very nice choice for a game to test the sound out with. Great stuff bro!
Thanks for the video... I just grabbed a Game boy pocket in a bunch of stuff I got for $15 but, it does nothing at all with new batteries and the battery compartment looks new.... so thanks, I'll give this a shot..
Thanks for a great video Luke love your Repair videos I learn something every time Thank you so much man.
Great video bud! I'm thinking of starting to restore these myself as a hobby - will be sure to follow! Cheers, Rob
gotta love nintendo for using tri-wing screws *cough* *cough*
It is really unnecessary but they are super duper cheap to get online, they're like 3 bucks, they are so cheap to the point where they don't need the special screws, probably one of the reasons they are less prevalent in newer consoles.
very cool video. I'm actually thinking about fixing up my old pocket and opening a small repair service now.
I've got an old, beat-up purple color and this giving me some inspiration on fixing it up for sure! Haha
An excellent video! I may be repairing a Color shortly and I'll be coming back here. Thanks for make this.

you have no idea how much i want that pink shell... it looks so fucking sweet!
Way to go Luke! Now some little boy and girl can have a set of blue and pink Game Boys to entertain them while mom and dad argue on a road trip! Yeehaw! :)
Hi. You could try shielding the plastic with aluminum or something similar.
that pink gameboy pocket is so cute!
so good to see videos like this luke! love seeing dead game stuff come back alive, wish I could do what you do. I have a question for you, what did you use to clean the battery corrosion on the color?
Thats nice man! those old game boys were begging to be repaired lol
Awesome video Luke , Im having trouble with some repairs myself atm . I have 2 Atari 7800 controllers that are not working , and tried everything . But ill keep at them lol
Love these videos, they did put a smile on my face :) cheers Luke
This was really interesting to watch Luke
really nice job on the speaker, really resourceful of you
Yay! More broken stuff to fix. Congratulations on fixing them.
when your soldering you get really quite... I like it...
Luke is Dr Frankengame. He brings consoles back from the dead.
Thanx for uploading.
thank you I have now got my old Gameboy color working again
Great video Luke! I would like to see more of these. One question for you though; what did you use to clean up the cases and the plastic screens?
how did that ring/ circle gets on the silver tag on the back of the pink gbp. I have seen couple gbp with that ring on that spot.
I like this video; really nice conversational style.

Cool video again Luke :) wish I could solder on that small a scale. Really want to fit a Region Free BIOS Chip to my SEGA Saturn.
Next week on "Pimp My Console", Luke's gonna wire a 10" sub into a Gameboy Advance.
Any ideas?
Looks like you need a new Game Boy. They're pretty cheap.
What do you use to polish the cases themselves? I have several Gameboys I would like to clean up a bit. Thanks!
Would a Mr. clean magic eraser work on taking scratches out?
Hey, if nobody told u yet, the pink game boy pocket, where only sold in Japan:) I have he same one, and a red pocket aswell.
Hi nice video.
Once i had also a GBC with a no sound problem.
I fixed it to connect the speaker to the headphone jack pins.
A bit simple but it works ;)
I wonder if you hacked a hole on the left and put another speaker if you can get stereo sound like the headphones? That would be cool.
i just recently bought a gameboy color and the screen cover is a bit scratched. im not exactly sure how i would be able to replace the screen cover.
Great fixes Bro! Looks awesome
I just got a red gameboy pocket for 10 dollars I'm happy parts for it are cheap because it needs a backlight new buttons charger and a battery cover
It's not much in the way of buffing, it works reaaallly good on that thick grime, though.
Very cool !how difficult is it to replace a regular gameboy screen? Thanks for the tutorial Luke.
Hey luke !Awesome stuff man, i was wondering if the sound was better with the ds speaker ?
Hey Luke! Are there any Gameboy fixing/modding videos upcoming from you? You explain the process quite well, and I think I just have to revive the power switch of my GBC. Did you ever add audio jack port to GBA SPs? I'm a bit afraid to start on my 101 model.
Awesome!! Love watching stuff like this from Luke. #Badass

hey man i have a gameboy color with LBG entrenched on the front. how would i fix that?
Hello, Luke, I recently bought a GBC, and it has corroded that battety spring (contact?), but it works fine, why's that?
I have a Gameboy Pocket that has no sound through the speaker OR the headphone jack. Any idea what this might be? The speaker was replaced. Someone said something about the "pot"? Let me know if you have any advice! Thanks!
any recommendations for a gameboy color that wont load games? a how to replace the cartridge slot?
What did you do to clean the faceplates up? Did you just use a cloth / water or?
Hi I have the sound problem but on the pocket I do have a nintendo ds speaker and psp speakers in stock should I be able to fix that?
amazing recovery work once again : D
Luke is freakin' amazing.
Why don't you use brand new cases from ebay/aliexpress?
Ahh, gargoyles and mega man, two excellent titles!
what can i use to clean the "motherboard" bit of internals? like smoke grime, etc.
You can use a cotton bud (a Q-tip) with isopropyl alcohol. Just don't use water to clean the motherboard as it could cause damage.
Hey, there i wonder if you can help with my Game Boy Color... My color palette is fading can u help me?
You have such a nice hobby :)
Hi. How do you fix Game Boys that have weak sound? Is that the speaker or some resistor or capacitor issue? Also how do you fix a shoulder button on an AGS-101 SP. Thank you. God bless. Rev. 21:4
How did you even find that pink gameboy on eBay? I've been looking forever for a good working one.
Dude...I know you're a troll. But seriously, games can be an art-form, it keeps people in business. It's a way to pass the time.
Hey Luke, what product or method you used to clean (or polish) the screen of game boys?
the outer screen i just buy replacements from ebay
I am having trouble opening my gameboy color what should I use
+jacob maston Triwing screwdrivers. I recommend Tekton, which you can find at Meijer's
there is a sea waves sound in the background.. isn't ?
My game boy without sound is output only from the headphones, the speaker changed and continues without sound, you know what I can do? Thank you!
damn makin moves that fast
