- Here's how I fixed a Pokemon Silver game when it wouldn't save.
In this video I used a 3.8mm GameBit to take out the screw and I replaced the battery with one I bought from Radio Shack. The battery is a CR2025 and you can get it at many stores for a few bucks. I taped it so it would stay in and closed it back up; Now it works.

Obviously when they made these games they had no idea we'd still be playing it in 2018
I'm playing in 2020
Big Smoke same here. Just found my silver version that I had in 2000 when I was 10.
Quarintine got me playing each gen lmao
I bought gold, silver , and crystal version on offer up a couple weeks ago. I had to replace all three batteries. I wish I wouldn’t have sold my copies as a kid because Pokémon games are expensive in 2020.
@@fabianramirez7807 very true also the gba games
I love you for this! I just found my gameboy and played for 2 1/2 hours and came back to nothing and I was about to just break the whole damn thing!
Anna Michels Same as well. I got mine yesterday, played a few hours and was soo pissed nothing was saved.
This just happened to me too lol!
I just got Pokemon Silver from a Retro game shop and I had played Silver for like 5 hours on the last save. Then yesterday when I opened the game later to continue playing the save file had disappeared. So they sold me a game with dead battery. Also the shop claimed they had "tested" the game. It seems they didn't do more than open the game.
lol literally why I looked this up
Be easy
some heroes dont weare capes.. unless you're wearing one and we can't see it
Diego Penha algunos heores no usan capa 😂😂😂😂😂 im dead
weare?
hey cool this is the exact game that won't save for me
Same
Same
also same :(
same
same for me too, I loled when I found this vid
For those of you who do not own screwdrivers that small, I found that thumbtacks worked most effectively as a substitute. Be warned, it will scratch your game cartridge, and yourself if you aren't careful. I also found that tweezers worked when the screw was loose, and were handy for prying the metal flaps off of the battery. I even managed to substitute a 2032 battery for a 2025, as both batteries were the same size and voltage, differing only in thickness. The battery managed to fit in the cartridge just barely.
You can also use a butter knife to remove the battery
Just played two hours of Silver then realized that it wouldn't save. Well, damnit, won't be able to buy these kind of batteries for a bit.
yessssssss. had an afternoon off today and didnt realize in total today i played for about 4 hours only to find out NONE of it saved...so mad. At least I know I can attempt to fix it. Hopefully it has nothing to do with my gameboy..
supersunnyally i got siler as a secret santa present. i played it a few times and it wud save but it randomly dissappeared and hasnt saved since
If you're don't have the tool to open the gamepack you can use a pen. Just remove the ink first. (Make sure it's a plastic tipped pen.) take a lighter to gently melt the tip of your pen, then you press the still hot pen tip onto the screw, letting it cool will allow it to form to the screw. Then proceed to use the pen as your screwdriver.
I dont tend to read youtube comments that much... by this has been by far the most usefull comment i have ever read before... i tried the thing with pen and it totally works.
Yeah, great advice for the children - take your lighter and melt plastic.
This 100% works, just tried it.
Both my gold and silver cartridges are working perfectly after watching this tutorial! Thanks so much, 13 years on and I feel like I'm 7 again :)
You must have grown up so much. I remember I saw your first tutorial on this back then in the time when you uploaded it 7 years ago and you helped me save my Pokemon Gold cartridge. Thanks man, nice to see that your channel grew quite a bit.
I bet you have grown yourself since you commented this 7 years ago
I just received a copy of Pokemon Silver from eBay with a dead battery. If I don't get a refund I'll attempt the battery swap! Very helpful upload.
harKazoid86's N64 Hub lol i just accidentally bought a copy of Gold that can't save on ebay, i didn't read the description
The seller is accepting a return thankfully but I've wasted £3 on postage. Could be worse! Next time will be buying like I did for Red/Blue - "new battery fully tested"
+harKazoid86's N64 Hub I prefer to buy ones with "dead" batteries since they're about .75 cents to replace here in the USA! Plus you get a cheaper auction with a used game case and dead battery xD
Same!!
Pretty much every copies battery is dead, cause the game is over 20 years old. If its got a working battery, it would have been replaced by the seller. Might as well buy a dead one and replace it yourself.
It is amazing that there is an entire world inside that little circuit board.
My battery in my pokemon yellow game from 1996 still works...
+Will Faolin dude mine too. i have red, blue and yellow they all work. i also have silver, gold and crystal and they all don't save!
+Will Faolin yellow or blue or any of the older pokemon games dont have this battery at all so it always will save. Gold and Silver do have, so it can keep the clock in time. My gold forgot my over 100 hour playtime... I was a bit mad :D
+Rageme My yellow picachu edition stopped saving.
That's actually wrong, first gen also had this battery, but it lasts much much longer than the ones in second gen because of the lack of a time/date system.
+Will Faolin That's awesome! I'd change that battery before you play next since you're pushing the 20 year mark :) Otherwise your game might erase during your new Pokemon journey! :O
Thanks you saved my childhood lol
lol from 7:30 to 7:49
aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa
lelele ur birth to naow is a joke
I was like that Charmander stuck out in the rain, and you, Ash, you and your video, saved me when I thought all was lost!
Thank you so much for this video. Writing this during lockdown due to covid 19 and I just bought Gold and Silver and turned out the save process didn’t work. Did everything in this video and they both work now.
this is great, thanks! I was so mad the first day I got silver and I played it for hours! next thing you know when I put it back in it was all gone, I caught over 30 pokemon. I was so heated
IT WORKED!! IT FRICKEN WORKED!! THANKYOU!!
My red worked
I never thought about how the inner mechanisms of games worked, but I never in a million years would have guessed that it was by a battery that would eventually need replacing. That's wild! I thought that as long as you took care of them, they lasted forever!
You sir are a life saver because my sister got me Pokémon Silver off of eBay and it didn’t save and I managed to replace the battery and now it works
Thank you, I thought I was the only one who had this problem... until I searched it up.
feel free to touch every part of the circuit board, the oils and moisture on your hands wont make a short circuit or anything.
Matthew Perez that google traductor :v
Matthew Perez so use gloves ?
Literally just did this. Works an absolute treat. You sir, are a legend! Thank You!!
Silver, red and blue all recently got dead batteries. I just did red after watching this and now works like a charm!! Thanks man.
What happens if one of the arms on the battery r breaks off? This happened to me pls help
Clob Nobs cool thnx
Remmer No one replied to you. It’s like you’re talking to a ghost unless they deleted their comment somehow.
I just keep the game on the whole time on my gameboy advance SP and keep it plugged in lol.
Will Strantz if u beat the pokemon league every time u accomplish something, such as catch a new pokemon, i find that it saves for about a week if u turn the game off. If it does accidently freeze or u shut it off by mistake, turn it back on as fast as u can. Also do not battle at the trainer house in Viridian City because it will make your game crash. My game has been on for over 1200 hours now
I left it plugged in but it still didn’t save my game...
Huge shout out man. I'm playing Pokemon silver on my original GBA and it feels great! Props for providing links too.
R.I.P my old Pokemon from Pokemon Gold. You will be missed ⚰️
I'm too scared to touch the arm things... don't want to break it
its worth a try. Better than not touching the game at all
You could take them off without ripping it off the board like this guy did in the video. All you need is a soldering iron.
You can also reattach the battery easier without using any tape. tape may corse a short with the board and will most probably kill your gameboy.
Oh I'm sorry. What can I say I use a mac and don't know how to turn the auto feature off.
Seems those prongs to hold the battery down is a pain in the ass to get up..Why not use a small flat head an take it up all together so it doesn't bend as much. As a Gamer..Watching this type of stuff..Makes me cringe alittle...Cause even though it's a game that can be replaced..It's just...I'd be too afraid to do it for fear I might mess it up. Lol
Ghost72091 im not sure if solder can be removed with a driver
Thank you very much! I had to put on some tape on the outside of the game just to make it hold together (the case has been through much). And now I can acually SAVE! Thank you again!
Thanks man, worked like a charm. Did 3 games right after I watched this.
Geez. Use a soldering iron and do it correctly.
if you have a pen just melt the end of it and put it on the screw and make your own screwdriver!
My friend just gave me a Pokemon Gold with a dead battery. This video is a great help!
So glad you posted this. Just changing the battery, I would never have thought such a thing... of course I had no idea the game itself had its own battery =P. Just learned lots of helpful things with this one vid. Thank you wiisixtyfour. Thank you RUclips. Btw the game used in this vid is the exact game I'm having trouble with too... Cool!
im getting a copy of Pokémon Silver in like 4 days im sooo eccited because its in Very good condition and save works (got it off amazon for 23 dollars) but if the save fails ill use this battery switch ps if u are going to sell a copy of Any game that can saves using abattery and said battery is dead Change it don't be a dick
I wish i could do this but my brother broke the arms off ;_;
simply buy a new battery with the arms on ebay they are reasonably cheap i think. there are many tutorials on the internet that use this method rather than the one he uses in the video!
+Urkle Might as well just buy a new cart
WalZero [BOM] I found you!
Thank you very much for this, I was so disappointed when my new Silver didn't save.
Today is July 30 2022 and I JUST got silver. Thank you so much bro. Takes me back to my childhood but the damn game won't save 😅
Their not arms, their terminals. why not buy a soldering iron?
It's not their, its they're. As in they are. Why not take your English classes seriously? Your criticism's will never be taken seriously if you are illiterate.
Thanks for the correction.
You're welcome, I just figured you would appreciate the criticism.
DoctorEdiz virgin?
Nope
thanks , now my pokémon gold is broken
+LopGamer Our Gold is broken too. I wonder if theres an issue with gold/silver more than others.
LopGamer a battery swap would be a lot easier if you knew how to solder
Thanks so much man! super helpful I was wondering for the longest time why the heck my Pokemon games wouldn't save and now it makes sense!
Thank you for proving my mother wrong. It's so nice to be right about things. I knew I could fix my Gold game, and I knew the battery was dead and she didn't believe me. Now I just have to fix it all by myself.
lmao, tape a battery in... kids don't follow this video. Solder a new one in like the game deserves.
RideRedRacer Agreed
+RideRedRacer how to solder sth if you have not the skills needed? better use tape for safety
ya but the thing is i have never soldered in my life. when i learned that replacing batteries in these game requires soldering it in, i taught myself how to do it. its simple. but ya if someone feels like they shouldnt attempt it then i dont think they should
Oh man, where were you when my game stopped saving 10 years ago?! Haha just decided to pick it up again - forgetting it had this problem - and played for hours. Oops! But you just saved me a ton of money! You're the best, mate!
Thanks Man, Recently I've finally gotten around to playing through the pokemon games and I got to Crystal (which I recently bought a cheap copy of) and I found out that Dunsparce is only in Gold and Silver. Well, my brother has two copies that he isnt using, but BOTH have bad batteries. It's nice to know it's literally this easy.
you're a life saver man , thank the Lord you're here for saving us all.
Dude! This is exactly what I must do to revive my GameBoy Color edition Pokémon Crystal! Thank you!
Thank you so much! I just got Pokémon silver and I thought maybe it was broken for good, but now I can probably fix it!
You just saved my life. But I still can't take back an hour of game time when I thought it was saving. :/
Working great!
I did everything you said (plus electrical tape) and the save is working again!
Thanks a lot!
Who else didn’t know they came with batteries🖐you’re a life saver m8
Thanks for the guide, was able to fix my Silver cartridge with this.
Thank you man, you just saved my childhood! :)
Excellent video! I did this and it worked! Yay for playing Gold again!
Just used a cr2016 and it still works. Thanks for the vid man. I see everyone saying this video sucks for this but in the end it works. It just may not be the "right" way but it is a way.
Helped me a lot!!!!! fixed an old gameboy color game that i used to love.... subscribed
the other option is to use a cr2025 battery holder the common one found on most computer motherboards works for this as well if you want to have a better way of replacing the battery but be farwarned that if you dont solder well dont use this method use the one in the video
Used this method after my boyfriend gave me a copy of Pokemon Red that wouldn't save. Worked like a charm! Thanks! :D
i love you bro thanks for the video. have the same game you have with the save not working. i followed the instructions and it works! thanks a thousand bro!
I found my old GBA & Pokemon Silver & tried to save it and the same thing happened. Thanks for making this video
did it work?
yes it did
Haha thanks dude! I got my GAMEBOY color and Pokemon silver today but Pokemon silver wouldn't save so I went and bought a new battery. I succeeded. Thanks too you!
Wow man this worked!!!! Thank you so much great instructional video! Needed to get mine up in running in 2020 with the whole isolation thing going on ya know lol
Great!
I have the same problem with my Wario Land 1 copy.Thank you so much.
Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷♥️
Thanks. Very Helpful. Just bought silver for like $15 (Legit) and it wouldn't save. Thanks again.
Thanks! I have my game apart and the battery out. The metal arms are still intact too. I've figured out that in a set of mini screwdrivers that the smallest flat head is the best to get under the arms and pry them off without breaking them. Just need to by the battery now.
Dude your video was very helpful you saved me a buncha money thanks
Thanks a lot! This helped me a ton, really clear instructions :)
thank you dude , tried doing this and my game works off to a good weekend with my 20y old gameboy color ..
Had a sudden urge to play my Pokémon Crystal again. Was very disappointed when It wouldn't save. Thanks for making this video. Followed step by step and it does work. even though I accidently broke a small piece off the bottom terminal :P Still works perfectly.
I just opened my Pokemon gold trying to fix the battery, someone wayyyyy back then like 2001 replaced the battery and everything on the circuit board, I got the battery out tho and the 2 metal peices bent off pretty easy. Probably gonna get a new battery today. Thanks m8 for the tutorial
Thanks a lot, man. Helped me get Crystal working again :)
100% worked for me for my poke-mon silver copy I used a CR2032T 3v maxwell battery from my countculater sorry my spelling yeah it's slightly bigger than the CR2025T 3v battery the cartridge holds it in place while the screw secures it from moving so yeah thanks man
this is one helpful video took about 5 min to fix works perfectly thanks man
Just changed the battery in my Pokemon gold. Works great thanks man
It worked for my Gold version too, thanks man you're awesome ^w^
Worked for me. Although my dad got the screw off useing the end of wire cutters. A doable method but you gotta be careful not to scratch the plastic .
dude, thanks so much!u dont realize how happy i was when my game actually started saving again, anyway thanks!
damn, when i saw the new game screen on mine it was like my childhood was lost forever. right in the feels.
Thanks this worked! I've missed my pokemon game and now I can play again
really? bcuz I hav sum that wont save, does it really work?
X .yzbeam yes.
Thank you!!!!
I found my Gameboy and tried saving, only to find it deleted everything when I turned it back on.
Thank you thank you thank you!!
Saved me from having to face my big brother and saying to him " Hey, guess what? I just destroyed your childhood game! Aren't you proud of me?"😃😄
does the battery have to be a cr 2025? all i can find are like we 2025s, and i dont know if the we 2025s work
This was very helpful, and works! Thanks very much.
Thank you! It worked perfectly for my Pokemon Gold cartridge!
Picked up a game up for $15 and wouldn't save. Thanks fir the help!
Your a hero give this guy a medal 🏅
Really helpful man thanks a lot.Now to others that will try it.Be careful with the two metal holders.I accidentaly cut the one :/ but still works.I used a Duracell CR2025 (It cost me 3 Euros= about 4 Dollars).
Thanks so much dude, i fixed my silver version just now, and i even broke the bottom arm, and it still worked
thanks, your video really help fix my pokemon yellow save issue
Great tutorial, right down to the same game I'm trying to fix.
Lmao same
Seems Silver (and probably Gold) must have been manufactured with some second-rate batteries. I have copies of Yellow and Blue that still have saves on them from over a decade ago.
The internal clock is what kills the battery for Gold Silver and Crystal.
marsh35 yep and that's when the ds had a clock in the system when they new they had f*** up
THANKS! I just found a copy of loz link awakening today garage saling, and I didn't know why it wasnt saving. Now I know!
btw these batteries can be purchased off of ebay for reasonable prices as well as the security bits that enable safe entry ingot the cart.
Brooo I had exact problem like 20 yrs ago on the exact same cartridge (Silver). Damnnn if only I was smart enough or saw your vid. Super thanks tho this solved one puzzle of my life lmfao
Wow this helps a lot you saved me a like at least 30 minutes of my time really helped, great vid.
Hi there. Very clear and informative video so thank you :) my issue is that I have rather clumsy hands and am reluctant to risk trying this in case I break it. Would it be worthwhile taking this (plus the new battery into an electronic repair shop? Alternatively, do you know if buying a brand new Gold/Silver would need new batteries or does the battery only wear down once you start playing? Any help you can give would be much appreciated :)
Thanks for this! It really helped me today
My uncle gave me this as a present with the gameboy color and I was exited to play for hours but then the save -_- but now with this I can play and not worry about save thx you
i just bought a GBA with pokemon silver for 20 bucks from my friend and i noticed it wouldnt save thx for how to fix this ill get to work over the weekend to fix it
