    The Market Street Subway was built in 1907 when the original stretch of Market Frankford line was built from 69th Street to 15th Street with the Market Street Subway portion being built between the 23rd Street Portal and 15th Street. in 1908 the Market Frankford Line was extended from 15th Street under Market Street to 2nd Street then emerged on to Front Street make a sharp turn on Deleware Avenue to go down to South Street.

      In the 1930s Municipal government of Philadelphia Authorized a Replacement of Market Street (El)evated Between 23rd and 40th Street. During the 40s construction halted due to World War Two. Construction Later Restared in the 1950s with the Market Street El being replaced between 22nd Street and 40th Street with a new subway.
