  • Learn to make a floating lantern prop for your Halloween display!
    In this video, we take a look at our self-contained Halloween floating lantern prop using wiper motors, fishing line, and pulleys.
    PROJECT NOTE: This is NOT the fishing line that will be used once installed in our haunt. We will be swapping out the clear monofilament fishing line for black braided fishing line, which is stronger and has a matte finish.

      @VanOaksProps thank you so much for ALL of your content! As big Halloween family we love seeing what you come up with!! I just somehow discovered this video last week and was thinking, Do you happen to have a drawing of how the string is laid out? I’d like to try this with a ghost, but I’m just a little confused!

    Hallowed Haunting Grounds (for those unfortunate souls not familiar) remains the most incredible home haunt I have ever seen, and its website (complete with interactive map) is just as impressive. It still exists online, where I hope it remains for many lifetimes as a tribute to an endeavour of over 3 decades that proved how home haunts could be more than fog machines and giant fake cobwebs. The overall amount of effects attempted, variety of illusions (they even had a Peppers Ghost) and level of detail achieved was something that has inspired many home haunters. They even created themes for the scenes. The work was done by multiple talented individuals, all with varying backgrounds in tech and theme park-level creativity. Channels like VanOaks and Wicked Makers are invaluable for bringing advanced techniques to home haunters looking to stand out against the "easy button" homes of today, full of inflatables and cartoony projectors.

    I was able to find a lantern like this one at an estate sale. It was kept in the basement of the house for many years and has several rusty spots on it already from natural causes. I want to use it for making something like you have here for next season. How hard is it to make it look "haunted" without repainting over the natural aging that it has undergone. It seems silly to restore a paint job on something like this, just to make it look old again.
    Thanks for your tips and tricks!

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  Год назад +1

      I would leave the natural aging and let it continue to age on its own. There’s no beating the real thing.

    Did you create the metal/wood fence? Is there a video for the build of the fencing? Love it.

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 года назад +1

      I did, however, it was made long before I started making videos. So there's no footage. I can tell you that the corner posts are staircase bannisters and the "metal" parts were made by making a silicone mold of a real metal part and then casting them in resin and painting them with my spray paint rust technique before being assembled.

    I would love to recreate this effect in my Halloween graveyard scene, but I'm kind of confused as to how you placed your pulleys... what kind of angles are needed? Do you have a basic diagram?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  4 года назад +2

      I don’t have a diagram, but I can say that the location of the pulleys doesn’t matter. One thing to consider is the possibility of your fishing line getting wrapped up in the other pulley. So make sure to give them sufficient space.

    I have been watching this and thinking of doing a floating lantern that runs horizontally back and forth between two trees. Sort of like an Axworthy ghost. The issue I am running into is the lantern weight pulling the line down too far and causing the line to fall off the pulley right before the lantern passes around the pulley. I was wondering if you have any thoughts on how to remedy this.

    What's a reindeer motor? (Beautifully done, btw)

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  4 года назад +1

      It's a synchronous motor. They're often referred to as "reindeer motors" because it's what's used in the motorized Christmas reindeers decorations.

      I agree. More of a tutorial on how to thread the fishing lines, where to hang counterweights and place pulleys would be super helpful. It’s hard to see where everything goes without an actual overhead still photo or diagram. Brilliant idea though. The look is amazing.

    where did you get the small plastic black pulleys you show in the video?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 года назад +1

      I 3d printed them, but found that they weren't necessary in the end. You just need to round off the holes where the fishing line enters the corner pieces to prevent it from wearing a notch into the wood.

  • @anthonyhodgson3427

    After watching this video a few times I wanted to make a lantern float between two trees about 20ft apart. After some research I came up with something along the lines of an Axworthy ghost. But due to the weight of the lantern the string pulls off the pulley right before the lantern passes around the pulley. I was wondering if you had any ideas on how to remedy this ?

    • @VanOaksProps
      @VanOaksProps  2 года назад +1

      Have you tried removing any excess weight? Cut out the bottom of the lantern, remove any of the unneeded internal parts, etc

    • @ghostbombl8034

      Try making a flip flop switch. When lantern hits the switch at the end both sides,it just rev the motor.
