A lot can change in 5 years when you keep learning new ways to make things. Revisiting old projects with new knowledge and plusing them can be just as rewarding as making them the first time.
Revisiting and revising prior projects is the mandate of every maker! I made a VERY rough first wizard staff. It lit, but was very heavy, poorly balanced, and the light was dim (1989, so pre LED). The second version was much more refined, better wood, much better headpiece, brighter light, easier battery change mechanism. Over the decades I’ve upgraded many parts, finally adding the eye melting LED 5 years ago! It is great to make the additions; the key is to honor the previous versions at the same time. Perfect job with the Shovel!
We were thinking of making this so I rewatched the video recently. We didn't have time after all to make the prop (there's always next year), BUT we used the technique to solve the problem of getting our haunted rocking chair to actually rock, so thank you for that 🙂
I really like your improvement. But it makes me want to see a floating hat above that moves with the prop, like the invisible ghost is standing there . Maybe a wire painted black extended above the shovel handle to support a Derby or cap. And while I'm imagining away, it would be cool to have a old man's voice telling a story" Wells sir it was during the prohibition and my brother decided he could make some fast cash by running hooch. Only problem is he didn't have a vehicle he needed so we came to me. You didn't bother to tell me what his bright idea was, only that he needed to borrow my vehicle for the weekend..." You get my drift, create a further narrative around your motion prop. I still love what you did.
Very effective update on the prop mechanism, Derek. Good job and good solution. At some point, I hope you can add video of the shovel under night/show lighting conditions to we can see it in all its haunting glory?
Thanks! I considered it for this video, but without pulling all the haunt lighting out of storage it would have just been the lantern light and that wouldn't have done it any justice. So it'll have to be in October/November once the haunt is setup.
I am brand new at haunting and have watched most of all your video. Love them! Trying to figure out how your wired everything in this video. Thank you for sharing your awesome work
The 12v power connects to the speed controller, then the speed controller is connected to the power cord for the wiper motor. The lantern is wired like normal lamp would be wired. I hope that helps.
Love it,, may also look into battery operated led flickering hurricane lanterns.. I found one at a local hardware store on clearance.. It looks great and was cheap......
Love the new movement. Went back and watched the stump making video again also. Do you remember how many cans of spray foam you used to make the stump? Just happen to have some cardboard, a bucket and hot glue sticks laying around. This would be a cool build to hid a mini fogger for my new pop up skeleton project.
LOL as weird as this will sound, I had NO IDEA what a certain piece was called (saw it used in another video elsewhere) and have search for weeks... today, you solved that mystery for me... a HEIM JOINT. Thank you thank you! I need those for another project and THEN I am making this one for my graveyard also! Love your stuff and ideas.. never stop!
Another great video. I have question about the threaded rod. I have a quarter inch Heim joint but 1/4 inch threaded Rod did not work. Did I get the wrong size heim or do they make a rod that will fit 😅correctly in the joint?
I made this, of course. Now I would like to make a totally safe to swing around prop version of the shovel. If you are looking for project ideas to show and tell that is my idea for the day.
I wonder if it would be possible to use two wiper motors at 90 degree angles running at different speeds to create the effect of random left/right and circular motions. Hmm...
@@VanOaksProps Bummer. I bet I'm not the only one who'd be interested in that end of things. Its cool how you fabricate all your props, but you also have to know how to put it all together to make your scene work. Still awesome stuff, though.
@@VanOaksProps A co-worker and I found a sketch I can use with an ESP8266 or Arduino. Have it testing right now on my desk with an LED. Should work for me. Thanks.
So where did you source a 1/4"-20 rod end? I've searched high and low and have come up empty. I don't really want to go bigger than 1/4" rod but seems regular threaded rod does not mate up with a regular rod end that I can find.
@@VanOaksProps I think the difference between big city and tiny city. No such luck here. Can't even find it on amazon! May need to go to plan B of low tech dowel and over-sized eyelet hooks, but not going to be as slick.
That would definitely get the job done. The only reason I didn’t go that route is the clicking of the metal as it pushed/pulled. The volume of our haunt is low, so everything little noise really stands out.
Been looking at something similar but more of a digging motion. Thinking a skeleton pirate uncovering a buried treasure chest. I always take a simple idea and complicate it. I liked your "old" prop but the new one is more elegant. Well done.

I couldn’t agree more.
I think it’s a drastic improvement!! 😯😃🥰 Gorgeous! Would love to see more of it in the dark with the lantern glowing
Thanks!

Nice! Does it still fit in the tree stump? Love that stump.
It’s going to need a little modification, but it should fit.

I think so too
That's much better. Lovely stuff, thank you.

That threaded rod with those heim joints might work well with the Leering Larry prop I am hoping to make this year.
All good ideas can be made better and become great ideas. Nice job of progression in the craft Derek!

@@VanOaksProps That's pretty much what I was thinking, in the context of your haunt. Look forward to seeing it in place and swinging!
This looks so amazing! And now you have a stump that would be perfect for hiding a small projector! ❤️
Yep! You absolutely could, although it’s still the best way to hide the motor.
Really cool effect and improvements! Great tutorials- inspired to try to make some of these.

Wow! Looks great! You really make these techniques look so easy! Ha ha!

Love it! Although I think I have one more cool modification that you'd like to toy with 😉
Do you have a night video of it in operation after the modifications?
I don’t, unfortunately.

Hard to say what's going on in your situation, but my initial though is that It could be that the thread patterns aren't the same.
very cool !! Yeah i try to use wiper motors all the time if i can HFL!!
Yeah, they're a must. Reindeer motors have their place, but you can't beat the torque on a wiper motor.
Haunted shovel!!!!!!! Yessssss
I knew you’d appreciate that.
Awesome Halloween prop, but you should have shown what it looked like in the dark 🧟♀️🎃💀

It should. The biggest issue would be hiding the motors, I'd think.
Great stuff, as always. Would love to hear more about how you control your haunt/scenes with arduinos, if there's enough info there for a video.
I wish I could tell you. I’m not a programmer and had a friend build two modules that trigger at random times.

Try local mom & pop hardware stores. They always have the hard to find stuff. Or you can step up to a larger rod.

@@torsloke Here is a video I found that shows what you were looking for. ruclips.net/video/FRKC6G2vYkE/видео.html
so what is powering the speed control? it looks like some sort of dc power supply? is it 12v or like a laptop style power supply?
That's correct. There's links to everything in the video description if you'd like more details.
You could add some faux plants such as grasses or wreathes to the sides to hide the machinery.
Great idea!
I come for the tutorials and the opening theme...😀

Right?!
Most little hardware stores that I have found carry them...not so much the orange or blue box....

How do you change from 120v to 12v for the wiper motor? Is there any a/c to d/c conversion?
