very nice !! I to just bought one of those bulbs to place inside a lantern on top of a 90 year old street clock I am doing a restoration on. I figured it would give the effect of a gas light lantern
Love the stippling metal and rust effect. Just made a cage for Hansel and Gretal at our theatre. Going to give that technique a crack to scenic the cage!
Hi. I got the bulbs, the Wago connectors and Cell battery thing, put in the batteries and followed your steps exactly but the light isn’t turning on. What am I doing wrong?!! Help please. I made the prop and it’s fabulous. Now I just need this light to work!!
Oh heck yeah!! EDIT: You just gave me an idea to improve upon your candelabra prop. The eva craft foam is perfect for that! I've wanted to make the little "cup" shaped holders for the base of the candles!
Love this and appreciate that it’s a simpler build that anyone can make without special tools. It’s a beautiful piece. That is for sharing your knowledge
I have been playing with ways to use modeling paste lately. mostly as a replacement for Bondo on 3d printed parts but didn't think to use it to simulate rust. That was awesome!
I totally was saying, "You used baking soda before. I wonder if I could use that" and then...You said it. haha! Love that confirmation! And I love this project. I am SO in love with this project idea! Thanks for sharing your creative genius with us, once again!
One of the best How To guides I've seen for prop torches. And I have this exact need at the entrance to my haunted yard walkthrough. Impressive tutorial, thank you!
Add some smoke to it with a bit of stuffing. I use hairspray to make it stiff and then add a bit of black or dark grey misted to it to make it smokier... then just sit into the top!
Nice build. The thing I see to truly make it medieval is the addition of rivets where the uprights meet the cross rings. And anywhere else where two pieces of metal look like they are joined together.
I got the stuff laying around to make this. I did order the bulbs (ordered 2) from your Amazon link. That was the only thing I needed. You're right...maybe making this will get me back into the creative juice flow I need. My creative juices had solidified into an igneous rock LOL
That's a nice looking prop. I was thinking if it was built of meta;, it would have small rivets to hold the bands together at the contact points. A dab of hot glue for a small rivet?
I always like the 'metallic' finishes on your fake metal props. It really does look like aged wrought iron. Also, that flame light is one of the best I've seen. I'll have to pick some of those up. Very nice over all.
This was helpful in so many ways! The hack of the lightbulb to run on batteries was especially valuable. I am intimidated by the simplest electronics. I have one of those bulbs that runs on solar power, but the wires came disconnected from the panel. Any suggestions for how to reconnect it? Another suggestion for wood grain (albeit probably not on hand) is wood-patterned contact paper. Finally, I love your voice, Derek, and could listen to you talk all day!
Brilliant build! Would love to see you rest the torch from National Treasure that way! In the meantime, I have some spare pvc and foam sheets to collect!
I love the versatility of eva foam. Nice lightbulb hack too. Nice prop overall, I usually have issues with paint coming off pvc easily. I feel like a primer and seal coat would be ideal for longevity and handling, but a sealer would work fine with minimal handling. I’d be interested if you made a wall mount for the torch, where it could be taken off and put back. Maybe involving magnets? 🤔 Have you tried cutting EVA with the Glowforge? I imagine the heat may affect the accuracy of the cut, but it’d be interesting to see some testing, maybe using a “protective” layer of something on top… I’d be testing right now if I had a Glowforge! Curiosity got me!
PVC can definitely benefit from an acetone wipe down before paint and a clear coat. As for laser cutting the foam, that’s exactly what I did and it worked really well. It’s just critical that you make sure the foam is actually EVA and not something else that would be extremely harmful to breathe when it’s being cut.
You are so professional and so talented and your videos are so amazing ! A lot of people that make their videos always say... and then I did this.. and then I did this.. Your videos are so entertaining and so professional
Your projects are amazing and you make it look so simple. I think it’s the way you speak and your voice. It’s captivating. Is that a voice you had to practice or is that your natural speaking voice?
How do you only have 63k subs? Super fun and creative ideas that are approachable. I especially appreciate the tips like 'don't have X (specialized tool or item)? Try Y and get a similar result'. Thanks, looks like I have some fun projects ahead of me!
This is amazing Derek! Wonderfully done and clever. Thank you for putting this out! If you are in Folsom or La Jolla in September or October, look me up!
Looks awesome. I started making some out of stainless sheet metal years ago but never could figure out the mounting points. Finally tossed them out when I was cleaning the shop. 😢
I love the detail and the way you explained each step! I love how you turned out the top! What is your favorite spray paint to use? What color was your metallic spray paint? What do you use to cut the foam? The cuts were so clean!
Thanks! There’s links to everything I used in the video description and the foam was cut with my laser cutter to save time but you can get the same results with a sharp razor blade.
@@VanOaksPropsoh wow, I’m so sorry I missed your detailed bio. That is so kind to share your files and techniques with us. The SVG was a because I have a Cricut 👏🙌! What kind of laser machine do you have?
I did a similar hack to that flame bulb a couple of years ago for a lantern build in my temple theme. I used a AA battery pack instead of the cell battery though. I might have to use some of these tricks myself, maybe an EVA foam cage for a live specimen?
Okay, I'd like some help. Following Derek's great directions, I have made two of the medieval torches. But I'd like to be able to slide them into holders on my porch posts. Any ideas on how to do this would be appreciated.
The longest pieces are 13” long, so if you use the tile print function in adobe acrobat you can tape your pages together to make the template. You can get 2 sets from one 18x12” piece of craft foam
It looks great! Do you know, by any chance, how long your battery setup runs for on the flame setting? I use the same bulbs for my larp lanterns, using three AA batteries, and its big and hard to conceal them. Was wondering if your battery setup might be the solution to my problem :)
So, I'm dumb when it comes to electronics (which is becoming a real limiting factor for my prop build wants)... but if the circut board isnt necessary for the flame function of the LED's, then why is it there? I also never knew you could just pop the top off the flame bulbs! THAT'S gonna be VERY helpful when I finish revamping my fireplace!
That circuit board converts the AC power from the light bulb socket to DC power at the right voltage and current for the LEDs to run. It's basically just a tiny power supply board.
You just provided me with the lighting solution for my haunts tour guides. My wife and I love everything you create. Thank you!
Happy to help!
That turned out awesome! Cinnamon sprinkled on wet paint will also look like rust on a project as well.
Do you leave or blot it?
very nice !!
I am SO going to build one of these! Or two. Or...
Not sure I'm up to rewiring lightbulbs, though. I'll have to find a substitute way of lighting it.
You can do it!

I love those bulbs and have a bunch but didn't realize you can hack them to run on 5v. That's a great tip all on it's own. Thanks!
Love this and appreciate that it’s a simpler build that anyone can make without special tools. It’s a beautiful piece. That is for sharing your knowledge
Thanks for the lists of items needed. I just wish the LED light was remote control so that it wouldn't have to be taken apart to turn on/off.
Yes I agree
My hubs who is not a haunter but an engineer, loved this video! He was amazed how great it looked!
Is he so cucked that he can't comment for himself?

This came out terrific
A fabulous new addition to your Halloween playlist. Great way to get into the spirit of the season. Thanks Derek!

Good job Derek!
Id love to see this with a wall mount option as well. Then cover with some cobwebs for a really cool effect!
Cool idea!
A metal wire paint stripping wheel in a drill also works great for adding faux wood grain to PVC :)
You Sir would have ruled in the golden years of monster films! Thanks again 😊 😎
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ Awesome Love It.😊😊😊😊😊 Thank You for Sharing.
You are so welcome
Love this idea. I’m actually using the same electrical concept to add a bulb like that inside a lantern for my display.
I wanted to do this for our game room, can't believe the electrical hack was that easy. BIG thank you!!!
I love scrap builds. My scrap pile gets embarrassingly large at times. Thank you!

This looks incredible! Really well done and a super versatile prop that I think could also totally fit into a Ren Faire or D&D style set-up/party!
That turned out great love the simplicity of the build !!!!

Fantastic! Can’t believe that is foam ❤
Just love watching your creativity!! Oh and your intro music is super catchy, I catch myself humming along to it, lol.

Excellent prop making. Love this one.

Came awesome. I'm going to try to build this one. Thanks for sharing. 👍😎

What a great prop! Thanks for your attention to detail! Well done.👍
Thank you too!
Awesome prop! Will definitely be making a few of these in the future
Incredible! That looks so freaking real! Way better than a real (safe) flame could ever do. Awesome build! 👍🏼
Looks great. Nice work man.
Thanks a bunch!
I love it Derek, you always have some great ideas. 😊
I'll need to figure out a cool wall mount that the torch can be placed and removed from as needed
Another awesome build!!!
This torch is awesome and pretty easy to make following your instructions! You never cease to amaze me with your creations.❤

Very cool, great job 🧡🤎💛🍁🍂
Fantastic. What does the circuit board inside the flame bulb do? I thought for sure it wouldn't flicker when you said you were pulling it out.
It drops the voltage from 110 to 5v.
So cool! Great build!
That’s one fantastic/awesome idea for a Halloween prop 🎃💀🎈☠️ Thank you so much for sharing
Love these! What size does the template print to and how many can you get out of one sheet of foam?
The longest pieces are 13” long, so if you use the tile print function in adobe acrobat you can tape your pages together to make the template. You can get 2 sets from one 18x12” piece of craft foam
It looks great!

Could you use this in a mummy scene?
Absolutely
Thank you Derek for a great video. One thing that was not mentioned: what you used to trace the pattern on the craft foam since it is black?
Silver sharpie is great for tracing patterns on dark colored foam
@@VanOaksProps Thanks
This looks Awesome! Love his build. Curious though, how long does the average battery last?
Great question. I haven't tested it, but would assume that because it's LED the battery should last a decent amount of time.
Dude thanks! Very cool
FANTASTIC 👏
Thanks!
Another excellent video !
Just an FYI, the burnt umber link brings up sienna ?! (Same as 2nd link, though the links look different ?!)
Let me fix that! Thanks for the heads up.
@@VanOaksProps no problem ! 😊
That looks amazing. How did you cut the craft foam so precisely?
I cheated and used my laser cutter. lol
Omg I love it!
