If you are one of these people who has only ever played DCS, then I would really recommend to branch out. Combat Flight Sims are a genre so do not keep yourself closed off in just one game.
@@PotatoTickler I would just buy them all on sale. But if you had to pick one Bodenplatte is probably the one that gets used the most on combat box with that said I find the earlier ones like Kuban to be infinitely more interesting. The western front is kind of boring in comparison to the east IMHO.
Piston warbirds never really interested me, but IL-2’s Korean War project has me absolutely HYPED. The DCS MiG-15 is one of my favorites to fly, but it feels kind of like a jet without a home. Even in ECW it’s just constantly outclassed by the more modern competition. Now it’s going to have a setting where it shares king of the sky status with the Saber.
as someone new to flight simming, I'm glad to know the playerbase in this game is so experienced. it makes me feel a lot better about how often I just end up being a free meal for a 190
Yes, Il-2 does encourage you to survive. E.g. in servers, if you have 5 kills but you quit midflight or crash instead of landing safe at home, you get a 0.5x points multiplier, whereas if you do land safe at an active friendly base/home base, you get a 2.5x, as such your efforts for making your team win count much more. Emergency landings give a 1.5x I think. Bailouts over friendly territory is a 1.0x. Also, the aircraft you take out to fly in multiplayer airfields are only "refunded" to that airfield once you land. And in singleplayer campaign, if your pilot dies in ironman mode, he's dead-dead. But even if you didn't tick it, you gotta fly the whole half an hour long mission all over again. So yeah. Survive.
I started to replay IL-2 multiplayer again after my DCS seems bugged and can't get to any multiplayer server. Had a blast yesterday flying the MC.202 against Mig-3s and hurricanes over Moscow. But If the P-40 is "buffed", might check that forgotten beast
in 1942 maps it has access to an upgraded engine which gives it more WEP time. It sadly won't do well against a good BF109F pilot, but even the boys flying over Africa had to contend with that reality
@@Wildharrier i'm not very experienced in it but it is pretty fun. Its definitely an underdog plane, but it lives and dies by the 37mm. Land a hit, fight over. Great challenge but it isn't crippled in a fight. Definitely fly with a buddy if possible and prioritize going in with an energy advantage
@@M3RUL3Z Maybe use It for intercept bombers or attackers instead of CAP?. Don't know, I'll give a try. If you want to fly someday, you can count on me mate
I love the P-39, stall control and slow flying is really fun due to the mid engine. Check out Krupinski’s “P-39 chills ” videos to see where it really holds its own.
Did 2 sorties on IL-2 in combat box today in the D9. Really with IL-2 you really need that friend I find unless there is server balance. Managed to get 2 kills with no deaths but it's much harder to solo in it
I just came back to il2 ive noticed that people playing the objective and doing big raids have dropped off. I see alot more fighter team death match. I like to escort so is not as fun win i get on a team that is all fighters
Older aircraft can be more of a challenge at first but if you fly them, I find going back to more powerful aircraft to almost feel like cheating (boring)
I always have this hope that Il2 multiplayer will have a resurgence of sorts, its always very hit or miss if combat box will even have more than 20 people or so when i hop on. Probably wishful thinking.
Combat Box usually has 60+ players during US time zone evenings when the Apollo campaigns are running. If you show up for FNF you may not even be able to get into the server, it’s so full.
@@CueBall909 I guess I had gotten very unlucky the few Fridays I had tried it. I had just assumed that wasn't even a thing anymore. Checked in there last Saturday as well, same thing.

Stepped away from dcs a couple weeks now and since GB now supports 128 buttons I’m back into it. I l started IL-2 when it was just forgotten battles and stayed daily in it through 1946. Still miss those old days but GB is fun.
I think both DCS and IL-2 servers should remove player plane losses from moving the front line. If I'm playing one side or the other, I have absolutely no control over other players on my side losing planes. Only counting ground kills is better game play, and I think more realistic.
I think he plays on low gamma setting, that's why. He wouldn't under any circumstance have to turn up cockpit lighting in broad daylight otherwise, but I guess he figures it's easier to spot aircraft against the ground that way. Me personally, am not sold on the benefit of this radical gamma adjustment thing, if you look around often enough, your eye's gotta pick things up that aren't in your blindspots either way.
i cant enjoy IL2 GB as planes aren't visible to me until they are withing 2 kilometer, making it impossible to spot enemy's and avoid being jumped. tried messing with visual settings but never was able to get an enjoyable flight out of it unless im in a group that somehow is able to see other planes.
Zooming in cockpit should be banned in servers like this. Its unrealistic, real pilot didnt have this. Its like using telecope or binoculars in flight inside cockpit.
Be a whole lot better if the game wasnt solely focused on PvP dogfights, that and the aimbot level AI in IL-2 make it a very unfun experience for someone trying to have casual fun.
If you hit up the right server it isn't. Try Finnish Virtualpilots for example, lets you do anything from cargo missions to rescue of downed pilots. That or register to Tactical Air War or something. But frankly, you do gotta bomb, moreso, coordinate bombing raids in any server if you want to win. Chat to teammates, try to get em to either bomb with you or escort you. Last time in Finnish I flew a Ju-52 with paratroopers, some guy escorted me over in a 109, was a nice breath of fresh air over those giant furballs that sometimes clump up for not much reason. Now the AI... It's quite crap, I agree there. Not sure it's cuz it's good at aiming (though sure it can be vs other AI), more like it just doesn't know much aside from one circle fights. Back to multiplayer: just because everyone seems to be flyight a fighter, doesn't mean they're contributing much to the victory of the team.
The Combat Box server often runs a dynamic campaign that focuses on ground attack. There’s plenty of dogfight action, but the ground pounders are the ones moving the frontline.
Dogfights don't do anything for the dynamic front lines. Only ground attack matters. Dogfights are just more fun for most people, so when they play a couple hours on a weekend they want to dogfight instead of flying in a straight line to drop bombs.
If you are one of these people who has only ever played DCS, then I would really recommend to branch out. Combat Flight Sims are a genre so do not keep yourself closed off in just one game.
What IL-2 expansion is the best in your opinion?
I liek late war best but Kuban is also fun. Would recommend Bodenplatte for a starter DLC, or Normandy if you like twin engined aircraft
Kuban is more of a challenge that late war, esp if you’re flying Soviet

Some people put in over 150 hours a month on CombatBox, let alone other servers
Yeah there are a ton of sweats in IL-2, less players but more average time per player
Yeah I've gotten alot worse ever since a got a more intense job so that's me too most of the time but I really like flying anyway.
lmao
Ew, weeb.
Loved the commentary! It's really interesting to listen to what is going through your mind as your dogfighting.
Seems like a whole metagame has developed around sweating for your K/D ratio that more or less replicates real pilots caring about their life.
