I know people will jump in here and complain about the grind and say that air rb is more efficient - if you do then you do not get the point of this video. I do not care about the grind. I play to just experience some fun and War Thunder air sim has some unique things that the other games do not. I just play the same 2-3 planes I have and I don't really care about unlocking other planes. I just play to play. I hope that some people who have WT who never play air sim, feel like they can try it and experience something new. Enjoy!

Biggest problem with Air Sim is that it has absurd repair costs matched with rewards based in intervals which are hard to offset without premium planes. One time i wanted to have bit fun in tier 5 lost 250k SL in one game (i had 3 kd) preventing me from playing since i couldnt spawn any more.

    • @AxiamWolfe
      @AxiamWolfe 3 месяца назад +9

@@engineer1941 There has been a massive nerf to repair costs, and buff to SL rewards some time at the start of this year apparently. I'm currently at Tier 4 props and each spawn is just 10k in cost. I earn that back just by getting barely anything done; one air kill is enough to turn a profit per life during my stock grind through the tech tree, and that is before even calculating in premium time.

As DCS player I have to admint that as life goes to having less and less time with carrier/family I am now more often on WT than DCS as it offers much more for the 30-60min free time slots in the evenings. I no longer fight control scheme, no longer fight performance issues of DCS or lua scripting and if you know energy fighting concepts, you can actually dominate majority of WT sim games. I play exclusivelly VR and sim mode and the key to happiness is to ignore the grind because by there is actually more fun in props and early jets as these ranks offer the most skill based fights, top tier with all aspect and radar missiles is only about positioning and catching people off guard and is generally much less skill based.

To me WT sim is a nice casual game to unwind after work. It has less fidelity than IL2 and DCS but it gets the general idea of air combat across. I think WT Sim has a lot of potential filling the sim-lite niche but it’s not a popular mode so I doubt the snail will develop it.

WT's systems are surprisingly sophisticated. You mentioned radar, but missile seekers (and countermeasures, and counter-countermeasures) are also intricately modeled with no RNG. The values of the simulated parameters aren't super realistic (hence why I said 'sophisticated' instead), so you have things like especially effective flares and chaff and exaggerated multi-pathing for radar missiles, but it can be a satisfying experience regardless of all that and the simplistic flight models

I had already made this video, I typically try to keep 4-8 weeks of content in a bank as a back up for when I get busy. The recent stuff with Razbam has made me want to diversify my risk a bit, for the sake of the channel so I asked them to become a CC partner. As a VR/sim player of WT (but not exclusive) I have to agree here. Just ignore the grind people, the most fun is anyway in the low-mid tier fights, the moment you reach all-aspect IR missilles and radar missilles it is anyway becomming much less skill based (as low tier is pure energy fighting focused) and only based on possitioning and catching people off-guard to fire a missile at them. So ignore the grind, you will have a lot of good fun just playing props and it will teach you things that DCS didn't managed to teach me in a decade (the energy fighting I mean).
Also the top tier systems modelling is weird, WT devs don't really want to model the more modern planes instruments properly so in VR I am stuck with a holographics radar hud on my left. So a bit immersion breaking, but props and early jets dont have this immersion breaker.

2:30 also does much better job with IR missiles modeling as well compared to DCS. The amount of suddle differences between different IR missile models is just insane and the heat signature and flares popping affecting them is modeled in excelent and transparent way(thanks to recent replay mode that shows seeker tracking and why particular flare worked vs not worked in confusing the IR missile seeker).

WT Flight models are usually decent to pretty good across the board, and anything out of place gets bug reported until its fixed (unless the documents are restricted, like the SU-27 bleed rate). Another thing is that countermeasures are very accurate, down to the rise time of flares, along with accurately modeled seeker behavior it makes flaring IRCCM missiles a skill instead of a random RNG diceroll like in DCS.

I really feel that greatest thing WT or other sims offer is a streamlined approach to game modes, match making, scenarios etc. I really want to just get in and do a thing, a focused thing, that my whole team is doing. Sometimes a packed DCS server feels like 50 people all playing separate games where some other players just happen to render on their map. I've been playing a lot of VTOL VR lately and was surprised to find that other players communicate and coordinate at vastly higher rates than I've ever seen in public DCS and I think this is mostly due to the nature of the missions available. It's very easy to know what your role is, what your objective is, who else is going to be doing that and what others are doing. That was a long winded way to say, yeah, it's funny how a scoreboard and a currency grind (or an easily accessible objective list in VTOL VR) can actually make a game better when it promotes objective play and teamwork. WT Sim is a great time.

Someone in my discord pointed this video out to me. Just going to leave a comment as I mainly play War Thunder Sim.
As far as the DCS comparisons go...War Thunder does the whole "being a game" thing a lot better than DCS while DCS does the pilotage and in the cockpit experience better.
Generally speaking, I think the standard of gameplay in War Thunder might be a little better across the board just due to not having as long of a learning curve to get the basics down. I don't have to manage systems as aggressively in War Thunder and I can focus more on nuances of dogfighting, situational awareness, etc...and it is also likely that the guy I am fighting is at least further along in that learning curve.
On the other hand War Thunder sim has all of its own problems. The way that BR ranges work in sim is that there is always something that is best for the daily bracket...and players will gravitate towards that. Also there is a pretty stark range of BRs that are occupied by grinders and very small games where getting into a fight takes awhile...and the opposition is not all that interesting. It takes awhile to understand how the sim community thinks to actually find the games where active players gravitate to.
As far as flight models go...from what I have observed and tested...Gaijin does make an honest attempt at modeling things accurately. Just recently the Mirage 2000 has gone through a bunch of changes to try to get the plane to more closely match its EM diagram...but because accurate modeling of aircraft is hard...nothing ever matches up 100%. In general I would describe WT flight models as being more consistent across the board in DCS insofar if something is inaccurate...it is consistently inaccurate across multiple flight models.

I personally love war thunder air sim as well as DCS. As you’ve mentioned numerous times in previous videos, the full Fidelity nature of many DCS modules means they’re much more complicated to learn in war thunder the far more simplistic approach to modeling aircraft allows for a huge variety from pre wwii all the way to almost modern aircraft. This enables so much variety in flight styles. But one thing that I personally love about war thunder is the numerous models of the same airframe, for example the sheer number of MIG 21s in the game with huge different capability levels.

Maps like Winter Stalingrad, Zhengzhou and Tunisia are great for the interception bomber-hunting gameplay loop, to the point that it can turn into a tower defense game firing fox1s at all the zombers trying to exploit the points earned by mighty mouse rockets.

You should be able to set IAS (Altitude Compensated air speed) in the HUD settings. It'll make it much easier than relying on speed measured in relation to the ground. Another thing is that Flaps in WT can be really weird. I would almost never advise you use your Flaps in a rate fight. It will almost always result in a worse rate-fight performance.

One little piece of advice for the MiG-21's in WarThunder, don't drop takeoff flaps in dogfights, it doesn't help you turn any better, just makes you bleed more speed.

Being a little bored of the units I like to fly in DCS, I went for Falcon BMS, and then for War Thunder Simulation Battles and I am having a lot of fun, grinding units like the Mirages the Kfir, Hunter, F-8, F-15A, F-16A. I have even lost all shame happily Giving them my money for Premium accounts and other units. But yeah I would prefer spending mu money on units like those if they were available on DCS

The later jets arent as much fun imo just because map size and radar being so good leads to more 3rd partying/point click missle fights, but the early super sonic planes are very fun to play in sim. The variety of aircraft you play and fight and strategies that you have to use to do so really makes it interesting. Some planes have good radar, some have none at all. Some are fast, some have missles ect. Glad to see people recommending it because it does suffer from a shortage of players at times, but other times there is to many (especailly during events like right now). I think they need to imtroduce bigger maps or cap the teams at 10v10 instead of the current 16v16 for the more modern jets, for earlier jets and props team and map sizes work well.
    Good video!

I can't tell if I should be mad or happy. I watched this video a few months back and nodded in a faint interest. I had played War Thunder since 2013 but dropped it around a year ago for my own mental health.
Well the bug came back last week and I said... let's try sim. Bound up my PS5 controller and sent it. Sure enough, Cold War Sim is super charming. You just fly. It's less about the grind and more just enjoying the journey with your aircraft. It's been really refreshing and I hadn't expected it. Dogfights are rare but intense. Most often, you can actually sneak around to get what you need done. Aircraft that normally don't perform in RB are suddenly shining in this mode. I find my radar to be a god send for IFF. Also I'm not just using pulse doppler if the aircraft has it. It becomes your eyes, and seeing is important. Finally, I was always really good with leading targets in air RB for some wild snap shots. I find that, with actual cockpit visibility to account for, getting on your opponent's tail is far more important now.
The mirage f1c has been a standout for myself. It's honestly charming as it shines just enough in most categories to find ways to dominate a fight at the BR. Your radar can see quite well. Two magic 2s on the wingtips keeps you safe. Two 530Fs to use that radar. Good manueverability that will punish anyone who bleeds speed too fast. It's a blast.
Honorable mention to the J7E. It's a turning monster that can fully deflect the elevator and keep a consistent turn. But, without 3rd person mouse controls, it is very apparent why most MiGs switched to the Gsh-2-23 rather than the ol 30mms. 60 rounds is rough.

Air sim is great fun but it has things that need some changes like the introduction of more enemy AI convoys, air patrols/ strikes missions, and AWACS. It gets pretty empty as the match goes on sadly. Another issue is the way they balance teams. RedFor gets France, Japan, Gemrany, and sweden at times which leads to a lot of instances where you're facing off against Phantoms, mirages, F5s, and F104s which gets very confusing, especially if you have some on your team which you always will. There's also the matter of not being able to use MFDs inside the cockpit which ruins immersion for those of us that really want to play sim more seriously for fun without having to learn all of DCS

@@Enigma89 I had a random thought about a potential solution; What if each vehicle had an individual 'allignment' that you could then assign to a special inter-national lineup for sim and possibly other gamemodes requiring multiple vehicles like the ground battles?
E.g. Axis and Allies for interwar and WW2, East and West for cold war and today. This would also allow for some more interesting lineups, and possibly even encourage people to experiment with the more obscure trees to diversify their lineups.
Opening up lineups like that might be a nightmare for balance though. And it wouldn't counteract things like the premium beutewaffen. Just a thought I guess.

I mostly play too tier air sim but lately I’ve been playing 10.3-11.3 (Mirage F1C, MiG 21Bis, F5E). It’s a good balance of tech but you can get some really good dogfights too.
I’d like your opinion on top tier air sim from an “outside” perspective. WT’s sim community is fairly small and Gaijin neglects sim like it’s a plague.
Currently in top tier air sim the matchmaking is extremely unbalanced due to ghost lobbies (where a player joins and leaves while the match is going and when he leaves his name is still on the leaderboard which counts as a player on the team and it allows the opposing team to stack) causing 1 team to outnumber the other. Right now the blue team (US mostly) out numbers the red team (Russia, China) because yes the NATO based planes are more popular and the Aim-9M spam just further adds the incentive to play the planes with those missiles because right now they have no smoke and if you know you know…

Just tried WT for the 1st time, quite complicated system for someone used to IL-2 and others. From what I see, it's going to cost a LOT of money to be able to fly in any of the Dynamic Campaigns, or even the single missions (in Full realism/Sim mode). For someone new, choosing a single mission that required I buy the "CR.42". i'm lost. Went to Online Store, search shows nada.. but I did see you can spend hundreds of dollars on others!

    Honestly agree in a way.
I like DCS for its modern aircraft. FF modules are awesome for modern jets that benefit from it (say the F/A 18 is amazing to play in DCS) BUT anything before is I think overpriced as FF modules. For that WT is a nice break.

      @loneirregular1280 3 месяца назад

@RW-zn8vy true that. The WSO has his own mini game in the back seat, somewhat same applies to the Tomcat.
Different folks, different strokes, though. I am still saying that some of the analogue aircraft are a little bit overpriced / overcomplicated for many. I can still see some hard-core fan of a plane to appreciate the FF model of an older aircraft. There is a reason why I am eyeing on the Mosquito, the Sabre or the Mig-15; and the Mig-21. But many of the older aircraft dont really benefit that much from being FF in DCS, or might be holding players back, for them, War Thunder might be a good pick.
I like the quick combat aspect of War Thunder for times when I dont have too much time at my disposal. In DCS things take time, Im not saying this negatively though. Thats the thing I like in DCS. Byt I dont always have 1+ hour available hehe.

I still stand by that WT air sim (and just air sim) would be in a much healthier space and have little effect on the rest of the war thunder 'economy' if they entirely disconnected it from the free to play model and just let sim players outright buy access to it and every air vehicle as a stand alone package (either as a separate game, or in the current game)
The truth is the crossover of sim and RB/AB players is a lot smaller in air battles then in other modes, beyond times people were abusing sim for grind (when bomber pilots use to gunship in sim to make easy lions/eagles) the actual current player base are quite far apart. So you wont lose any substantial amount currently in the grind if you offered them every plane and upgrade but only in sim and I think there is a further player base out there for a 'DCS lite' they just dont want to be forced into some awful grind model. We saw this with IL2 BOS. When it originally launched they stuck in little grind bars for every plane to unlock camos and loadouts and the player base revolted. They ended up making bank of it by basically charging more for players to just skip it by buying the premium edition, but they stopped doing it for all later versions. Ground forces has always been different, the difference between sim and RB ground forces is a lot more nuanced and since its inception the two modes have functionally competed over the same player base (it's why ground forces never got a enduring confrontation for it's sim mode like air did) so no chance in hell they'd ever offer the same deal for sim ground.
Perhaps this is functionally what the upcoming VR focused War Thunder spin off will become (Aces of Thunder). If they are smart they would try to avoid putting a grind in that title and make it a sort of middle point between VTOL VR and DCS/IL2 .
Though at the moment from what I've read it's very ww2 focused atm and also a ps5 vr exclusive title, I suspect it wont be for long, and that someone in Gaijin is trying to get it to work with the meta quest 2/3.

Why are you using flaps when you are diving, which effectivelly brakes your speed/energy gain from the descent the most, and don't use them at the top of the loop when the flaps can give the biggest increase in turn rate for the lowest energy loss penalty (because you are already slowest). In my oppinion you should do the opposite and just try to make the bottom curve more shallow to not hit the ground. I usually do the opposite and then have guns on target on descent much faster.
