  • Erlkönig, D328 by Franz Schubert
    Karim Sulayman, tenor
    Yi-heng Yang, fortepiano
Recorded May 2019, during sessions for Sulayman and Yang's album,
"Where Only Stars Can Hear Us"
    Now available from AVIE Records.
In life and music, Grammy Award-winning tenor Karim Sulayman is a master storyteller. Where Only Stars Can Hear Us is a journey through the songs of Franz Schubert, a composer who was able to capture joy and sorrow in a single moment like no other. Karim’s voyage traverses themes of darkness and yearning, guided throughout by moonbeams and shining stars. His partner is historical keyboardist Yi-heng Yang who plays on a fortepiano built by Joseph Simon in Vienna in 1830, adding an air of authenticity from Schubert’s time.

Erlkönig is one of my all-time favorites, with its delightful shifts from speaker to speaker as the story unfolds. This performance delivers all of the pathos, tied up in a ribbon by Karim's lovely delivery, Yi-heng's masterful technique, and the manifold advantages of using fortepiano for the (killer) ostinati throughout the accompaniment. Wow!
Thanks for recording it here at Drew! Ellis Hilton

The modern piano is simply incapable of creating the explosive sound of horror in the repeated quadruple octaves (starting at 3:26) that occurs when the boy has just announced "Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan!" ["Alder King has done me harm!"]. Before I first heard a historical-instrument rendition (and there are almost none of these!), I had never even noticed that anything particularly musically striking was going on at that moment. This recording of Erlkönig seems likely to be the best that currently exists.

Well done and so intense! (I know this was a promo, but I wish they hadn't broken the tension after it was over by showing artists' chummy walk-off. Really broke the spell.)

I like it, actually. It breaks the spell, but that only underscores how tense we were up to that point. I mean, one wouldn’t want it as the standard ending to all great performances. But it happened that time, and I find it effective.

Great voice, great accompaniment. But the operatic stye - no, no, no. This is Lieder, not opera. Let the music and the quality of Innigkeit get the message across. Histrionics belongs to opera.

The style perfectly reflects the dramatic expressivity of the song. This is not an “innig” work.

He doesn't just sing the songs, he experiences them.I love Karim Sulayman's radiance with his soulmate Yi-heng Yang..
