I've been searching for the best audio interface for my MacBook Pro M1, and I think I found it! I compared the Audient EVO 4 vs UA Volt 176 w/ the Shure SM58 microphone to see which one worked best for my vocal & music recording needs.

...but...Shure SM 58 doesn't use phantom power. It has no such circuitry. You do still get hum suppression from the balanced XLR cable but the mic is ignoring the 48v and works fine without it. You can safely turn it off if you wish.
Truth! Thanks. Yeah I didn't know that until after I published this video lol, I'm a bit of a mic n00b haha. The more you know 🙃™
Lol I was just about to say that😂😂😂 which makes me think how much he knows about the interface 😅
Thank you for this video it was insanely helpful!!!
You're very welcome! Glad it was helpful for ya 🤘🏼 thx for watching & commenting!
Thank you! Very helpful.
No prob! Thanks for watching and commenting 👏🏼
After watching your video, I bought the Shure SM58 with the Volt 176 and a Fethead (signal booster). The recordings sound sooo good. Thank you very much.
Previously I was using the Rode Podmic USB, a fairly new model, but I wasn't happy with the sound quality at all.
Glad it worked out for you! The SM58 is such an incredible mic.
Man, agree with @SEVEN, INSANELY helpful. I'm on my way to go buy an interface today. EVO 4, Volt 1, Scarlett, etc. were all in contention. I had a pro audio guy recommend the 176/276, and I didn't know much about it, or the compressor. I also use an M1 MB, so this pushed the 176 over the top for me. Much appreciated!
Just out of curiosity, have you tried this with an Electro Voice RE-20? I know the gain isn't as hot with that mic as an SM-58. Curious about noise - thanks!
Glad it helped! I haven't tried the 176 with the RE-20, but anything I've run thru the 176 so far has sounded so clean 👌🏼 even the SM7B sounds amazing thru it w/ no cloudlifter, fethead etc needed imo! Check my recent videos for examples of mics running thru the 176, such as ruclips.net/video/im_THI8ipoU/видео.html and ruclips.net/video/JU5oA0UrSCw/видео.html
@@b3naqua Awesome! Ended up picking up the 276 as the 176 wasn't in stock. A lot more than I'd planned to spend, but will be good to have the two channels.
I'll try to drop thoughts in here as I have the chance to play with it. Thanks again!
@@Mecherle awesome! Congrats on the 276 - having more inputs can't hurt! I kinda wish I'd gotten the 276 myself, to record vocals and guitar simultaneously, or 2 mics. I might pick one up too!
@@b3naqua Yes, I’m super budget-conscious and always adhered to the “I don’t NEED two channels” mentality.
Then, my local shop only had the 276, and I decided to go for it. Very glad I did now!
I have both of these interfaces, the 176 is the one for me, the connectors on the Evo became intermittent and its audio presence is behind the 176.
Good to hear! Still love my 176 as well. Ended up returning the Evo
which interface do you think is the best for sibilance my s and t sounds have always drove me crazy and i struggle getting the de esser to actually de ess lol
I'd suggest getting a good pop filter or foam cover for your mic. I think that will make more of a difference for de-essing than an interface itself.
Hello, which one would you recommend?
ID4 vs Evo 4
-I have Beyerdynamic DT 990 Pro 250Ohm headphones
-I work in the box
-Sometimes record vocals and guitar (rarely)
Price difference between ID4 & Evo 4 is around $50 USD.
This will be my first audio interface. Also, considering my use case shared above, would you recommend spending a bit more on the next variant of any of these two interfaces (Evo 8 or ID 14, based on what you recommend).
Suggestions for any other audio interface within the same range is also welcome. Thanks!
I'd start w the evo4 and see if it meets your needs, then go from there
176!!!! Real time compression is a really fun experience if you have the money for it
@@pb25193 agreed!
Phantom power wouldn’t apply to an SM58. Any reason you used +48 with a dynamic mic? Are you using a cloud lifter?
Nah I’m just dumb lol
@@b3naqua I certainly don’t think that’s the case. I was genuinely curious.
I’m using the sm 58 & Evo. There’s literally almost no sound waves in my DAW. The sound quality is garbage. What cables are you using? I’ve even tried updating. Any suggestions?
Also, I’m currently using a Mac and either GarageBand or Fl Studio.
Hmm have you tried different cables? And is the gain set to a good level? With the sm58 and the evo, I had the gain set to like 3:00 (75%) and it gave me a good signal.
whats the gain on Volt 176
Hey Ben Aqua evo 4 is compatible with Apple m1 processer
Yup!
Bro I am literally comparing these two and couldn’t decide which to purchase. I think you’ve convinced me to go eco. Thanks for the vid
Evo *
lol glad it was helpful! the evo is dope 🤘🏼
how does audio technica m50x sounds with EVO 4? IS there no problem with HPs being low impedance? I cant decide between UAD volt1 or EVO4 because of these headphones :D
Both interfaces drive the M50x really well, with the edge going to the Volt imo. The Evo is nice and clean but you have to push the volume up to like 60-70% to get a nice clear sound on the M50x, where the Volt volume is barely even on and it’s nice and loud lol
@@b3naqua Thanks! I was looking for months on audient / Evo interface, but since now I can finally buy one, I may prefer volt. Thanks for this vid!
@@ClarkSpencer1 np! Yeah the Volt has been p solid so far 👌🏼 the headphone jack sounds SO GOOD on it. I also tried the Audient id14 mkII (video here: ruclips.net/video/n8zv0y7n1yM/видео.html), which was dope, but had a similar headphone situation as the Evo. I had to push it to like 70% to get a full sound, even w the low impedance M50x
thnx lot
Thx for watching!
you don't need phantom power for the SM58... think heard you say you have it enabled
Yeah I goofed lol
@@b3naqua which would you advise for a beginner a.k.a. noob?
@@Bronco2Cj Evo
The noise floor and hiss is most likely because you have phantom power on and you're lucky you didn't damage your mic. If you did that with a ribbon mic it would have fried immediately.
I am dumb

Now I am hungry
Great review. Thanks
Mmmmm pizza
🍕 awesome review.
Thx so much 🤘🏼
🍕🍕the UAD Volt 176 is the best budget interface
Agreed!
🍕 I'm looking for Evo 8 but cheaper? esi Neva close but not close, all Evo 8 has coming is another phone or 🦻 Bluetooth out? for which idc much, it's perfect😦
look for used/refurbished models! saves a bunch of $ for basically the same thing
weird comparison..... Would have been better looking at the ID14
life is wEirD tbh
