Fairy bread is a staple at children's parties, especially for the ages from 3 up to about 9. Slices of bread are usually cut into 4 triangle shapes, so there is no big corner crust for young teeth. Don't worry about leftovers, the parents picking up their little darlings will scoff (eat) any leftovers, usually with a comment like;- "Oh, fairy bread, l haven't had that in years." Which actually means not since the last party l took my child to.
It's nice to see visitors trying our foods, and enjoying them. You'll have to come back sometime.

My mum used to stick fairy bread in my school lunches sometimes :) Untoasted is the way to go though. I’ve never eaten it toasted. BBQ shapes are the best. The left over tomato powder at the bottom of the bag is the greatest.

@Duane Dibbley and I don’t think they left the Anzac biscuits open on the bench for a few days either, so they won’t get the proper experience there either🙁. We all know that is the only way to eat store bought right?

do yourself a favour and don't eat those shit mass produced lamingtons. if you buy them you get them from a bakery they come with cream inside usually. and they taste 1000 times better. you could easy get the recipe and make your own fresh ones. lamingtons are also common fund raisers for schools and sports they call it a lamington drive similar to a sausage sizzle being the name for a fund raiser using a snag on bread.
alao got a chuckle about the solo "its very carbonated" solos ad slogan is light on the fizz so you can slam it down fast.

If you like Woolworths lamingtons, then you will love going to a real bakery and getting lamingtons freshly made on the premises. Same with meat pies, there is a world of difference between pies bought from the supermarket and pies made by a real baker. There is a lot of coconut in Australian food because 54% of the country is in the tropics, and the country is a large producer of tropical fruits like bananas, mangoes, coconuts, etc. if you go to North Queensland you will see coconut palms all along the coast.

    • @twotravelingkings

    • @tacitdionysus3220
      @tacitdionysus3220 4 года назад +6

Lamingtons were originally home-made, using segments of day old cake that is beginning to go a bit dry. Rolling it in chocolate sauce makes the cake moist again, and the coconut enhances the flavour and makes it less messy to handle.

      @phillipj.moodie3077 3 года назад +1

@@tacitdionysus3220 So nostagic. I am 83 and my Mother made a batch of lamingtons once week. With four young children in the house a sponge cake never sat around long enough to become "A day old" to form the basis of a traditional lamington. As we lived in Sydney a day old sponge was always dried out, so my Mother used to make an additional sponge, which she cooked in a rectangular tray, instead of the traditional 8 inch round cake tin. Then she would leave it for a day before she let me cut it up into cubes.
But the real treat was that because she always made the lamingtons on Sunday, she would make an extra bowl of choclate iceing and stir the remaining desiccated coconut into the very stiff icing mix, then roll the mix into balls, which she would pack into the brown paper bag that contained our sandwiches packed into brown paper bags. But the big treat was when I was given enough money to go to the Bakery, in the shopping strip near the school to buy a pie with sauce and a freshly baked Boston Bun. 75 years later that's still my favourite lunch snack, because there is still an old fashioned Lunch Shop, in Clarendon Street South Melbourne, that still make their own pies, pasties and sausages rolls, along with a range of traditional "Biscuits" while the nearby Old Paper Shop Deli makes what are the best lamingtons that I have ever bought. Phil.

    Tips:
The best Anzac biscuits are homemade, they're super easy to make.
Try the Wagon Wheel instead of the Arnott (pronounced AR-Not) Iced Vovo. I think Iced Vovos are a favorite of little old ladies.
Fairy Bread - children love it at birthday parties due to how pretty it is, not so much the nutritional value or taste. You need very soft white bread and you need to press the hundreds and thousands into the bread a bit for it to stick to the butter.
I'm glad to see you like Vegemite and eat it properly (sparingly). Try it on crisp buttered toast cut into strips (soldiers) dipped into a soft boiled egg. The best way to enjoy Vegemite!
    Good effort guys!

But my family has a way of eating that tastes amazing. 2 Nephews of mine came to visit, they hadn't wanted to eat it for years. Their Dad was a Vegemite fanatic, who liked to slather it on. I made myself some Vegemite and Cottage Cheese. I gave them some to try and they were hooked, they went through Cottage Cheese like it was going out style. Simply Toast your bread, then spread on Vegemite and Top with a Thick layer of Cottage Cheese. In Australia we have a variety called Creamed Cottage Cheese, it best for Vegemite and Cottage Cheese. People complain that Cottage Cheese is too Bland and Vegemite is too Strong. But together it balances out. It's the only way I eat Vegemite, as far as I'm concerned It's Heaven.

You have to have the butter or margarine already on your knife ready and waiting, so when the toast pops your ready with the butter then as soon as you put the butter on then put on the Vegemite as quick as you can. So then your basically swimming in butter and the toast is still piping hot! Beautiful,....got to be ready for that piping hot piece of toast with melting butter seconds after it pops.
But if your still not that clever cold toast with Vegemite is still ok, lol!
But it's best when everything is on that piece of toast only seconds after it pops,..with melting butter,...lol!

If you want to pronounce Arnotts like an Aussie replace the 'o' with an 'e' and cram it all into one syllable.
You can spread Vegemite thicker if you increase the amount of butter also. Its really good with cheese on toast and you can put a bit on steak as your cooking it for an extra kick!
Milo is great with hot or cold milk (never make it with water!) and the secret to making it properly is to completely ignore the instructions - at least four tablespoons are needed (if you have a mass of half dissolved Milo floating on top its perfect!)

I was at a freinds house for their kids party and they had a close friend of the family and his wife from the US there while they were over here on holidays.
We most definitely had Fairy Bread for the kids, near all families will do it, and they looked at me strange when i took two pieces and chowed down on them while at the table talking and even called me out for eating the kids food. I just looked at them stunned while everyone laughed not at me but at them. One of the other parents held up a piece they had on their plate and shoveled it in her mouth.
Mate informed them that Fairy Bread is every parents earliest childhood memory and we are not ashamed to admit we will still grab some every time we see it even as adults. Told them not to knock it unless they try it.
The looks on their face as they tried some. Damn hook, line and sinker they even went back for more themselves. Quietly they apoligised to me and swore they had never even dreamed of eating such a thing and would make sure they would make it themselves for their kids when they went back home.

You didn't do the Milo right! You're meant to eat heaped teaspoons of it out of the tin, and it sticks to the roof of your mouth, and you inadvertently breathe in and nearly choke to death! hahaha! I love these videos though, guys. It's awesome to see ppl from other countries trying our foods! xxoo

Vegemite does take a bit of getting accustomed to. Most Aussie kids have it before they can even remember having it. Me I'm that tuff I can eat it straight out of the jar.
Thanks for showing a bit of Australia to the world.

Me too. I sometimes dip teaspoon in, and put a lump in my mouth. Many years ago, it slipped down my throat, and I am choking on it. Luckily, I got it out. Can you imagine the epitaph, Choked to death on Vegimite. lol

If you are interested in all sorts of iconic Australian food and beverages, Bundaberg (a small coastal city in Queensland) is probably more famous within Australia for its Bundaberg Rum that for its Ginger beer. It has historically been a very large sugar cane producer which had a hand in both of these iconic drinks.

Some of us Aussies don't like to admit it, but that brand, 'Arnott's', who produces a couple of the products you tried, is owned by an American company - Campbell's.
They were once Aussie owned but the big money Campbell's corporation came in and bought them.
There's a better way to enjoy your Tim Tams - straight out of the freezer. Crisp as crisp and delightful. Not many Aussies know of this one.

You are killing me with the Iced Vovo’s. Every time we went to our grandparents place we had Iced Vovo’s and omg you have/had to try Clinkers. Vovo’s are my childhood massive memories. So sad you didn’t like them. 😢😢 Love that you got used to Vegemite. You spread it perfectly. Spot on! And the Shapes….. Pizza Shapes all the way! They’re the bomb, so much better then the chicken crimpy! Great video!

The best place to get a lamington is from a bakery as they are so much fresher then store bought ones.
Great videos guys I've just powered through them all.
P.S I hope you took some Vegemite home with you.

Definitely agree! We had a few delicious lamingtons from local bakeries around Sydney. We brought lots of Vegemite home and are still enjoying it. Actually saw Vegemite in our local grocery store (a small jar) for $7.99 USD! So happy you're enjoying our videos, means a lot to hear that 😊

OK you ate the Cheezels right and you got the tim tam spot on and bonus points for your Vegimite knowledge, and you even made the Milo right and put in on ice cream. But can't forgive that fairy bread!
Also you didn't invert the bottle for the ginger beer, try it again but this time hold the bottle upside down for a little while before opening. TRUST ME it makes a world of difference !

The best Shapes are BBQ Shapes, especially all the seasoning that gathers in the corners of the bag. As for Iced Vovos, they've never been the same since Arnott's were bought out by Campbell's (the US soup company)

You gotta have a nice dip to go with shapes. Personal favourite is hummus or tzatziki! With Anzacs, they go great with milk.
Another thing, good effort on the slams! Try it with baileys or another creamy drink. Super good 💪💪

I really like you guys and your travels. Thank you for sharing. I've known Australians, my friend's sister, to often scoop a whole teaspoonful of Vegimite out and suck on it like a lolliepop. Fairly bread has to be really fresh white bread with a healthy dose of soft butter (or Margerine) and Hundreds and Thousands. They are little dots, not the freckles that you guys used.
