    Does the financial background of male leads in rom-coms subconsciously add to their appeal?
    Yes, definitely.
    If they come from a high class background, they're rich. If they are lower class, they're hard-working/ struggling. If they're middle class, they're relatable.
    People find Ayushmann Khurrana's characters charming as well in movies like Vicky Donor or Badhai Ho even though they're not extremely rich.
    So yes, the financial background of the characters do add to liking them, just the reason behind liking them changes according to what exactly the background is.

    • @nikhilbharatan
      @nikhilbharatan 11 месяцев назад +3

      There are middle class romcoms also atleast in K'wood, M'wood and even in Marathi, Dhanush's Thiruchitrambalam and Yaaradi Nee Mohini are clear examples, from M'wood, a classic actor like Dileep (he was among the Big Ms batch during his intro in the industry) had romcoms like Vettam (directed by Priyan) and Mr Buttler, even recently Naslen's Premalu (from the director of Thanneer Mathan Dinangal, a school based mid class romcom) is also a middle class romcom.

I always feel that YJHD didn't actually had an ending. I would really love to see a part two of this movie, where Naina & Bunny tries their best to make their relation work, make adjustments for each other, learn & opt best things from each others personality. I really feel that thats how a perfect relationship is built.
    And about Rom Com worked because "It was a Rich guy that approached" is not really right, Movies like Ludo where saniya finally chose aditya, Ajab Prem ki Gazab Kahani, Bareli ki barfi, etc.... there are several more examples where girl fell for efforts & never or money, & so were in TJMM, RRKPK, JWM....... Bunny and Naina really did love each other and I've seen umpteen times of couples who seem radically different work. I think the fact that Bunny always noticed and accommodated to Naina's needs whenever they were near each other shows that he really cares for him. Naina is also not as passive as people believe just because she wears glasses and is shy. Mind you I am Gen Z and still feel the film is not as problematic as people think.

      2) Hitler Reference while motivating/ provocating workers. Swastik and Nazi generalisation squashed.

      He lost his sense of smell, taste, hearing, father is about to die, wife and kids leaving him, 2 brothers brutally killed by a butcher who is blood thirsty & ready to extract vengeance and still the CHARACTER WAS GLORIFIED AS PER PSEUDO WOKE. Films sell stories and the stories can be about anything under the sun. They aren’t obligated to always have moral connotations with a green flag protagonist. Sadly, the irony is we desire stories to be out of the box original content pieces but always expect them to have good wins over evil flair to it…which would eventually make every story the same!
    Also, what’s with Bollywood giving Ananya, Jhanvi, Arjun and others from film families multiple chances to redeem themselves despite having actors like Sanya, Wamiqa & Mrunal. It’s like the films have become a training ground for the filmy kids till they finally make it while the outsiders fight for mediocre monotonous opportunities!

      Yeah stories could be about anything and everything. Including evil things. Most of the times, evil actually does win over good in real world. But that's the thing, the director needs to portray it as wrong.
      This is the same argument used for movie heroes harassing the female lead and this being portrayed romantic. Harassment has always happened. It's the filmmaker's decision to show it as a good thing that needs to get rewarded that's wrong. If ur opinion is anything related to Kabir Singh or Animal, just know that the director thinks many of the actions done by the main character of these movies are correct when they are not, many viewers also think the same as him. and it's visible from his filmmaking as well. Agar koi villain, female lead ko harass karega, if he slaps her, the background music would be sinister, not romantic. If the villain marries the girl in the end, it won't be portrayed as a happy ending. Vanga made his characters shitty as hell but tried to make us like them. Adding a happy song at the end of Kabir Singh doesn't dissolve Kabir of his actions🤷🏻‍♀️

      Yeah, I don't think people should try so hard about de-sexualizing what has been already been established as a consensual sexual relationship among mentally competent adults. You can't make a sexual relationship wholesome and altruistic because it fundamentally cannot be that. Sexual relationship and courtships are by definition selfish. It is about enhancing your reproductive chances even if it must happen at the expense of the reproductive success of people who are not you or not related to you. Expecting sexual relations to be altruistic is as irrational as expecting a potential employee to put the company's interests above their own. You can try and romanticize such "loyal" employee all you like but that doesn't change the fact that no one stays long at a company unless said company is giving them more than any of its competition or they are stuck there with few options.
      You can make the way we depict sexual relationships currently more morally compliant, by removing gender-tied stereotypes, you keep alternating who chases and who is chased, who is the more dominant etc. You can do that if you wish to address the social and cultural expectations that harm people's self-image and confidence. But, trying to forcibly portray a fundamentally selfish association as superficially "wholesome" is just pushing a square peg into a round hole. All you are doing with that is avoiding the real problem and trying to guise the problematic aspects of your culture under pretty, polite motifs.

    • @SatrupaSharma
      @SatrupaSharma Месяц назад

      If people were truly sincere about male-female equality in peer relationships in popular art, as a creator, they'd focus on creating and as an audience, we would focus on celebrating male-female friendships where they are each other's most important personal relationship outside of family but both of them have independent romantic heterosexual relationships with other people and the friends are never even hinted as having any sexual interest in each other.
      Write legendary male-female friendships like so many iconic male-male friendship and female-female friendships we know and love, write sister characters in the same manner as brother characters and vice-versa, depict mothers in the same way you depict fathers and vice-versa, give us more female mentors, leaders and heroes in gender blind plots similar to what has been written for their male counterparts for years. That is how you respect women, that's how you show them as equal in films and stories. That's how you inspire a cultural change among the upcoming generations.
      Not by having the male sexual interest act like a sweet, chivalrous knight in shining armor or a supportive boyfriend, in either case, implying that a woman either needs a designated male sexual partner or that his presence is essential to her and improves her life in a unique and significant way that no other relationship could've done.
      That's still patriarchal, still androcentric and still leaves the agency and control of the female lead's character arc in the hands of her sexual interest. That's the same attitude as many people arguing that slavery isn't a problem if the slave owners are being nice and sweet to the people they have enslaved. Or the way a lot of us upper caste Indians are quick to preach about how casteism is no longer a problem in India because untouchability is no longer explicitly practiced in the cities and is only localized to villages.

    • @SatrupaSharma
      @SatrupaSharma Месяц назад

      Exactly, I don't owe it to anyone to find them sexually attractive. I'm not even obligated to find my formal co-parenting partner (otherwise known as spouse) sexually attractive. I am only obligated to make the love and care of our shared children a priority and dutifully fulfill my share of the co-parenting contract, regardless of who I'm attracted to or who I'm hooking up with.
      By not being attracted to someone, for whatever reason, I'm not disrespecting them or being bigoted in anyway. I'm within my rights to court the person that I find the most attractive. And said person is completely within her right to not humour my interest in her. That's not disrespectful and she doesn't need to justify her decision to anyone. No one is obligated to go out of their way to court a person as a form of kindness or charity.
      If you want to tackle bias and bigotry within yourself and your surroundings, do it in relationships and interactions that actually matter to people's lives and where they often don't have many alternatives. If you are a parent or sibling, don't discriminate among your children or siblings based on their gender, their personalities, their physical or mental circumstances. If you are a teacher, don't discriminate between your students based on their background. If you are an employer, don't favourably select employees based on their gender, race, caste, religion, regional background and/or educational prestige.
      My take on what lessons people should take away from the central conflict in the movie in question is that, "cheating" on your girl/boy-friend or dissolving your sexual relationship with them when a better sexual prospect came your way is not at all a problem.
      You only need to take some extra care if your soon to be ex is otherwise a good friend of yours as well. In that case, once your relationship dissolves they'll rejoin your "bro" category. And should you start neglecting a good friendship for sake of getting into someone's pants, that's moving into problematic and icky territory. "Hoe 1 before Hoe 2" is not necessary and quite toxic if you think about it but "bros before hoes" definitely is.

      @@abhijitrathaa1990 no we don't like bad acting nepo babies either. No one is hating her because she spoke about nepotism. In fact people like her more and are applauding her acting skills so she deserves even more because she spoke so boldly about nepotism. Most people in the audience didn't even know about nepotism before she spoke about it. What we are saying is that currently she is overhyped. She can act, but her personality had become so dramatic. She's become someone who resents others because now it's become like natural for her even the other person is not bad. I used to watch her interviews and really like her, until recently I realised a few interviews are so dramatic and creating problems where she is not even involved or things from way back in the past. On top of that, she does have a problem with her voice articulation. It's strenuous on the ears. When it comes to nepo babies they also get slashed...I mean look at Khushi kapoor, her vocal articulation was really bad in Archies and she really got trolled for it. If you are a good actor no one will mock you, maybe the Bollywood mafia won't give u better roles if u are not from their circle, but the audience won't troll u if you are a good actor. I know there are nepo babies that aren't good actors and still get good roles and that's what we don't like. But just because someone is a nepo baby doesn't mean they are a bad actor either... Take Ranbir Kapoor or Hrithik Roshan for example....these are really good strong actors. On another hand, actors like Alia Bhatt are good at acting but are also overhyped and it's becoming boring on the eyes to see the same actress in these big movies. Everyone has their share of audience bashing. But, the conclusion is that Kangana is being overhyped.

Something malayalam cinema has nailed. Although a regressive industry in reality, you get to see actors from diverse backgrounds playing amazing roles. Funnily the so called powerful people do decide to push certain actors and create a star out of them. I think it was unfair that Shahid Kapoor was not even nominated for Kabir Singh and RK won for animal. Some unknown power play is definitely at play. Even Kriti Sanon doesn't seem to be getting great opportunities as that of A listers.

Ranveer's character in Band baaja baarat was not rich, he was even boyish and a bit annoying initially, but Anushka's character did fall for him eventually. Varun's character manages to woo two females in Main Tera Hero and he isn't rich. Shudh desi romance, Pyar ka punchnama, hassi toh phasi, Ajab prem ki ghazab kahani, Jane Tu Ya Jane Na, Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhaniya, Mujhse Shadi Karogi, Bareilly ki barfi, Bachna Ae Haseeno, etc are few movies to name where the male leads are just from a very normal background and yet manage to charm the female leads.

If you notice, the humor and the writing style has been the same since the time they started creating CRED ads. Clients agree to such absurd concepts because it's created by such big names. my hot take is that indian animation should try to look beyond myths and epics. i understand that you want to make a story at a grand scale and scope which animation allows to be stylized, which works excellently with the ramayana and mahabharata (and related topics, like say chotta bheem), but my god would i like to see something more modern, or even just NEW. the legend of prince ram applied so many anime stylings to the ramayana to great effect, and i wonder if someone would try to apply a more indian touch to other stories too!
    absolutely agree about mrunal, sanya and wamiqa. I just saw jubilee and she was great! i guess it just feels like there isn't really a massive pool of top actresses - it's mostly just been, as you said, Deepika, Alia, and Katrina. Who i like, but god knows btown could use some fresh faces, many of whom have been proven down south or in OTT
    i think the wealth thing is definitely a factor at least in some cases, but it's hard to say. obviously it's a non-factor in something like 12th fail, but outside something like gehraiyaan where we do see a wealth divide (and the implication of deepika's character resenting ananya's character for being wealthy), i think most people, even if they are influenced by wealth, it doesn't matter as much, typically because there isn't really a sense of disparity or desperation.
    ajay devgn is certainly good, especially if you look at his long term film graph, but several of his misfires (bhuj most notably) have been REALLY bad, and overall he has been okay considering the last few years. my real hot take is that ajay should direct more - u me aur hum is a shockingly well-made film
    i loathe people who act like depiction = promotion. it's the same type of people who argued that gehraiyaan glorified cheating (lmao). SLB makes everything at an operatic, melodramatic scale, especially since devdas
    re: kangana - she's made her bed, frankly. re: karan - i personally think karan is just way too online and even if he doesn't talk about it on social media, he definitely seems to have taken a lot of the criticism (some reasonable, some less so) very much to heart
    also lmao who thought hrithik is an average dancer?!

    Bang on about animated films! It would be so much fun to see that again!
    Most of Indian animators go to foreign countries and work for animated films there and all we can do us just enjoy what they make because they are working where their work is appreciated definitely. But it still makes me think about what heights Indian animated films can achieve! Instead of vfx led movies which are neither here nor there, stuck in mediocrity, we should now have a resurfacing of animated indian films that absorb the talent of the animators, and also represent our rich cultural heritage.

And also many talks about why bollywood movies can't pull of comedy like they used to. About that, nowadays the actors wanna act everything in a cool way, cz they are being concern about their image or how good will they look. Look at Hera Pheri for example. They acting in such carefree way. Which makes comedy so natural. I think this is what missing from comedy films nowadays. (Look at srk in recent time. How he flex his muscle in every frame)

    Agreed with most of what you said except a few. Gheraiyaan and 12th Fail are not romcoms by any stretch of the imagination. They are both dramas. The idea of romcoms using the prince charming trope is as old as time, whether its the western or eastern fairy tales or the 1000s of mills & boon and harlequin books out there. Its the idea of catering to a largely female audience (although it might be a guilty pleasure for men too) and allowing them to escape to a dreamier, less complicated and wishful world. Romcoms are for the majority the female pov and it is so for that reason.

    That Boldcare ad was progressive and approachable (especially considering the wider Indian audience).
    I've also noticed the rich guy trope of Bollywood romcoms these days. The movies make sure to give the main characters at least one of the two- wealth or fame. I often reminisce about the old Hindi movies of the 80s, 90s and early 2000s when the trope of 'poor guy, rich girl' was seen in almost every other movie, and the main character was a down-on-luck, boy next door. Class divide is still very much prevalent in Indian society. Today's movies are missing this.

      His own PR team gave him that title. Plus the dude takes astronomical fees. No wonder why his movies don't work.

    I agree... Ajay Devgn is very underrated as a star... The good thing is he is not so concerned about if he is perceived as a superstar or not

    Unpopular opinion:Srk has lost his passion for acting.he is on a hunt for a great film since 2010.you can notice him noticeably phoning efforts in dilwale,hny,pathaan,jawan,chennai express etc.Dunki should have been that great film but alas.zero was the last great shahrukh khan acting performance

      @akib77777 he performed really well in fan, jhms and zero but all those became flops
      he sleep walked through pathaan, jawan but both went on to became huge blockbusters
      so i think he knows what is working and will try to do more of these 😭😭
      i soo want to see him in a role like dear zindagi, it was really good 😔

    Unpopular opinion : Jammy must review international films , start discussions on film recommendations, make a list of films that impacted his life , dance more , start " improve your vocabulary " classes , must keep characters, filmmakers writers in mind rather than focusing on public opinions, twitter banters , off screen events
