  • Why are #bollywood interviews so boring today? Is it the case of boring personalities or the fear of cancel culture that compels celebrities to tow the line? I hope you like the video on The Evolution Of Bollywood Interviews & Comebacks | The likes of #salmankhan #srk and #sanjaydutt were built different but do current actors struggle to be as blunt?

Salman Khan is unapologetically authentic and fearless because he has the privilege to be so. He is literally the one who decides people's careers in the industry. It's all about power! See, everyone wants to be able to express themselves without holding back their true feelings. But it's not possible for everyone since very few of them stand in the same position as the 'elite' ones. They're trying to make it big here so definitely they'd take the route of diplomacy.

One of my favorite interviews was Shahrukh Khan on AIB. It was hilarious and also gave you an insight into what stars have to deal with. While I do agree that this years season of KWK is quite bland compared to previous seasons, I do not blame Karan Johar for this. The amount of trolling and threats he had to endure during the pandemic was crazy. I feel that actors are becoming less unapologetic and fearless in interviews yes because of the backlash of social media but also as a protection to their family and livelihood. I feel we as an audience have to be more forgiving and less critical over truly trivial topics, so that our actors feel safe just being themselves.

Social Media has given a voice to a lot of reasonable people with common sense who point out hypocrisy in others and also given voice to idiots with accumulated resentment about their life.
Before, when a public figure said something everyone had to shut up and listen.
But now it works two ways -
    (A) if the actor says something stupid like Kareena or Sonam usually do, then the public will immediately humble them. This ain’t a bad thing.
    (B) if an actor says something nuanced. Meaning that it has a lot of context, reasoning, layered and rhetorical, then the trolls on the social media with a lot of accumulated frustration over their own lives, will begin a witch hunt on the actors and sadistically troll them.
For example in the video you posted, Salman’s words will be cut and then trolled to make it look like Salman is saying that “actors run the country, world and universe itself”.

Even in Hollywood you see people like nicki Minaj, cardi, miley, eminem speaking their minds whether it be misogyny or homophobia in 2010s but now they have toned down a lot because of cancel culture. Also there are many actors in today's generation as well who have certain mysticity in them like cillian murphy and in India, tabu and shefali shah who aren't active on social media. Nowadays actors don't want to express political opinions because it makes a preconceived notion on their image and when people go to see their films, they see their image not the character, something which kangana ranaut faced. That's why actors like ranbir choose not to be on socials or express his political opinions.

No doubt that the interviews will be diplomatic in the light of being better safe than sorry.
It's hard to be genuine in front of crores of people when every single one of them is rigid about their opinions, and literally no one can digest an opinion different from theirs. This topic i think very important. A stark difference from Tamil industry. There are so many fantastic interviews with directors mostly and actors but purely focussed on the artform and the movie. These interviews over the years have truely increased the viewer understanding of cinema and even the new crop directors. Likes of Baddy and Sudhir deserve a lot of praise for that. But when it comes to bollywood interviews its all too personal about the actors. That star worship needs to go firstly i believe. The interviews should be on the art form and not personal life. That should only be a small part. Firstly, bollywood needs to have more interviews with creators and not actors. For example, interviews with Pa.ranjith, raj B shetty, lokesh, mari selvaraj, myskin, thiyagaran kumaraja, vanga with baddy were all pure gold. He even started doing interviews with character role artistes like Charlie and others which were just phenomenal.
I believe, that some seriously good Movie critics have really made a hude difference in tamil cinema creators and viewers in the last 5-6 years. For a new or young director to have an interview with baddy has almost become a great expectation for me to explore and understand the artform. I guess, good content and appreciation will just follow. I have always felt this was a big lag in bollywood. May things change. May creators get more focus than actors and good cinema will flourish.

I agree with you Jammy... Someone needs to pick up the mantle of bringing back classic genre pf interviews where the host were genuinely interested in the guest. Jammy you have been bewstowed with this responsibility and be the guiding light for us.

I think that due to excessive use of social media, we have come to know more about these people than necessary, so now bad things as well as good things too seem boring Now whether it is the things spoken in an interview or in a conference..

Just a mediocre actor with a very boring personality who has a cult like fanbase that is only consumed with his thirst edits,
The only difference between an avg guy and Aditya roy Kapoor is that the latter can afford gym membership

it's not just happening with interviews of bollywood celebrities, it is happening in a lot of other industries like comedy, media, hell also wwe and with any publicly known personality. and it is happening all around the world not just here, the biggest reason for this is everyone has access to internet where they communicate and express their common ideas. what i think about this is that this is a "thing" of this new era and generation, which will eventually fade away with time like every previous "things" of those eras did.

I think political correctness of social media is the main reason. In this era people are afraid to speak their mind and i think it’s bizarre but this fear isn’t real. Social media has memory loss problem. It can only remember a thing for maximum of 7 days. I heard Dave Chapelle saying something like Twitter is a space which doesn’t exist so i guess these people need to grow some balls and say what they think.

Thank God finally someone said this. Previously they were raw as organic as possible. Their interviews have their own charm whether they are speaking something appealing or not so pleasing to here. But today's celebrities are so trained about everything . They're boring and this is one of the main reason people loosing interest in Bollywood

Coz people in the comments are justifying boycotting culture for ppl who stated facts. Why would any1 risk speaking their mind in a country with such people? When the nation becomes more tolerant people will speak their minds.

The interviews are so boring today because the actors are all scared of being cancelled and boycotted. I mean Amir Khan said something years ago and he is still being treated horribly. Some other actor may have said something years ago and people bring it up now on social media and troll and ridicule that actor. It's absolutely absurd. Even if we don't go back years, just look what is happening to Deepika right now. She was being honest and very candid on KwK and everyone started s*lut-shaming her and calling her names. That is why the rest of the season is so boring because no one wants to go through that.

When dealing with an audience in this economy, you have to define the rabble rousers who just want to cause chaos and then there are people who want accountability. Often, these two are conflated which is wrong.

I think people have gotten really mean. I understand criticism, but now people have gotten very rude, disrespectful and leave disgusting comments on celebrities' social media posts. If I was an actor, I would also limit my public interactions, people have gotten scarier for sure.

Interviews are boring these days because the actors are dull and boring. None of them stand out and they talk, walk the same. I call it Boringwood these days.

a very well made video and shows how the rapid growth of cancel culture and "trolling" has influenced the openness of celebrities, it's honestly a dilemma, whether they be organic and open about their life or just be boring but safe from scrutiny from the public regarding their choices, believes and actions.

Actors are not be blamed here, its the public who needs to take a chill pill...India is definitely progressing in this Digital age but there are downsides as well...Yesterday i was reading comments on some Sikh influencers and people had written "Lassi" in comment section bullying them i mean really we are going that low for a community who are our brothers and sisters.... We Indians are not used to this Digital platform and need to learn some digital etiquettes as well...Forget about Bollywood , Media and Social Media is enough to create issues within the country..

Such is the socio political scenario now that forget about film actors, just ask a common person on the street his opinion.there's a high possibility he will be very very guarded about expressing his views, especially if the view is not majoritarian.a difference of opinion is to be avoided at all cost.
