I was taught by my mother-in-law how to make tortillas and many other Mexican dishes, since I grew up mostly in Europe, my daddy was in the army. There is nothing like having the first one with butter on it. Pure heaven. I have been making tortillas for 62 years and I have never been able to make them round. I mean I get pretty close, but honestly, I have no idea why I can't make round tortillas. My wonderful father-in-law, used to hold them up and say things like, oh this looks like New York, or this looks like Kansas, etc. I think I hit every state! When my grandsons (they are 36 now) show up unexpectedly, I make them up a batch each to take home along with the salsa I make especially for them. Such a warm feeling knowing you are making someone happy, that is what I feel every time I make them. ❤❤
I made these today. They came out great. I appreciate the fact that you threw in an unmeasured blob of shortening. That’s about how much I had left, so I used it all, without worry. Thanks for sharing your family traditional recipe. Your grandma would be proud.
I grew up with my grandmother making tortillas and they were the best. I learned recently from my aunt who lived with my grandmother that YOU CAN SAVE PART OF THE DOUGH in cling wrap and then put in a zip lock bag and take out the next day and let get to room temp and make the remainder of the tortillas if you don’t want them all the same day because they are so much better fresh. SHE ALSO SAID YOU CAN FREEZE THE DOUGH AND LET IT DEFROST AND COME TO ROOM TEMP AND MAKE TORTILLAS… I tried the freeze method and it today and it worked great!!!! She said don’t leave the dough too long in the fridge but I think it is great you can do that.
Love that appreciation you could see in the eyes of your family, That's what living is all about, love shared 🥲 Thank you so much for this video, simplicity, I love it!!❤
These look the closest to what my mom did. My mom just passed away 😭 at 92 and I never learned to make her tortillas. By the time I was old enough to really appreciate it and want to get the recipe she had dementia and arthritis. Everything I saw you do in your video that your grandma did reminds me of what I remember seeing my mom do growing up... from covering the dough, stretching the dough and making balls mushroom style and patting them before putting on the comal... All things my mom did too! Most importantly, your final result looks like what I remember her tortillas looking like👍💜💜 Thank you so much👏👏 for the video, I'm going to give it a try soon.
I’m so sorry to hear of the passing of your mom. They kind of stay with us though don’t they when we keep their traditions alive. Every single time I make tortillas I think of my grandma Martinez. The little “mushroom caps” are called testales. You can store the dough covered in your refrigerator for 3-4 days. If you whip the shortening or lard before mixing in the flour you get a lighter texture and you won’t need the baking powder.
@@maryanncounty7880 pan could be too hot, too cold, or the dough is too dry or if you roll them out super thin, or if you wait too long for the first flip.
I made 50 tortillas the other day and I got one small taco, went back to the kitchen to have another and my kids had eaten all of sad tortillas. I wasn’t as happy as they were with the tortillas but your video is kinda letting me know what I did wrong thank you.
Lol. Sorry but it does take a little practice. I say lol because I remember making them with my grandma with a roller my grandpa made out of a broom handle. He would say in Spanish, these are shape of Texas but he would eat them and make yummy noises. I’m sure yours turned out better than mine were when I first made them. Haha!

It takes practice to do the “gentle stretch” but it does help to get a rounder tortilla.
Thank you and so easy. Mom has been gone for 5 years but she would make home made yummy 🤤 she tried to reach me but I couldn’t do it:( I’m going to try again.
Try again. There is nothing to me more fulfilling than to make a batch. I don't cook them 2 times a day anymore since I am by myself. Don't worry about how they look, in time you will be making them round, unless you are like me and can't make a round tortilla, lol. The flavor is what really counts. Good luck my dear with your efforts. ♥

Excellent video and pretty tortillas from scratch! May I ask what size is your palote and where did you get it? it's perfect size. I'm enjoying running into your wonderful videos.
It’s 12 inches. Custom made years ago by my grandpa. He was a machinist and made us all one for Christmas many years ago. One of a kind. Priceless. But you know what... before that we all used a one inch dowel sanded down really really well. My first palote when I was a kid was a broom stick handle sanded down made by my great grandpa Martinez.
@@NannetteBlair Yes LOL my current palote is wooden handle my husband cut for me. And my husband is a machinist for a manufacturing company so I'm going to have to show him and request this from him. Is it made of steel?

I do not know about saving the dough for sure. But I do know people will freeze them after the tortillas were made. It only takes a few minutes to thaw(about 15 or 20 minutes).
