To be fair the best mainstream has to offer is Kendrick LaTrashcan, Toilet Paper Swift, Paperweight Drake, F@G Bunny, etc so it’s hard to refute his argument unless your only metric to measure music is with arbitrary, soulless, and arguably rigged optics like sale numbers, Pulitzer Prizes, Elite award shows, and anything else that does nothing to increase sonic cohesiveness, but rather increases the level of trash that gets released. Music has definitely reached a state of creative bankruptcy. Underground for the most part is trash too, but for different reasons. Most of the tiktok “hits” are skips too, and if that fails the labels, they can just force them into “content” short videos in a last ditch effort to get streams. The state of music is hive minded and soulless now. Gate keepers and meat surfers are the norm. Any form of criticism is “hate” which all that does is create a vacuum of worthless ideas. The only possible solutions I can think of is wait for AI to take over and enjoy the algorithm, or just make music yourself as a hobbyist/artist so you can piece the ideas yourself while you grow and prolong the inevitable cynicism if you over analyze shit like I do.

On the topic of Crystal Castles, I don’t know how people can listen to their music and not feel gross knowing what Ethan Kath did to Alice Glass. Genuinely one of the most decrepit stories I have ever heard come out of the music industry. I can understand separating the art from the artist, but IMO what he did was just that awful. If you don’t know the story, Alice Glass released a whole statement about it and it’s a hard read, but it’s a necessary one.

Music isn't stale, it constantly changes and you need to be open minded...If someone told me like 15 years ago that I, a metal drummer, guitarist, bassist and vocalist, would become a mostly hip-hop producer and beats maker,I I would kick him so hard that I would sent him home...But I really put in the effort to make my own style and vibe that is impossible not to recognize it or mistakenly take me for another artist. I do this outta love since I was 11 and I don't look at it as a business and as far as I can tell, it's a rarity these days.
