  • Water being released to prevent Fontana Lake from flooding. Views from the top and bottom of the dam. Be patient...although tunnel 1 starts flowing first, it is rather unimpressive until after tunnel 2 gets up to speed.
Fontana Dam is the highest dam east of the Rocky Mountains at 480ft. When the flood gates are raised, spill water flows through two 34'-diameter tunnels that lead to the river below. The water is being released at over 100,000 gallons/second, traveling around 100mph at the bottom. The sprays are about 100ft tall.

This was neat. I have not seen the dam from this angle and the water release. What strikes me most is knowing that the young voices I hear are now 9 years older and will have this memory forever.
    Bless you folks.

We camp there just about 200 yards downstream quite often. Beautiful place. I've never seen them spill water like that.

Remember reading article some time ago where one the spill ways had extensive damaged from cavitation which destroyed the spillway, took engineers time to figure some solution to repair the spillway.
