I didn’t build models in the 90’s… so now seeing these kits is very interesting for me. My heart is always back in the 60’s when I first started scale modelling.
I recently managed to find a complete box of the Airfix 100 Years of Flight 1903 - 2003 Limited Edition, and it has this very kit in it! This was better than I expected. Thanks for the review, Harry! That collection, full list of kits in it. Spitfire (original blue bagged version) F.117A Stealth Falcon British Aerospace Harrier GR3 BAC EE Lightning F3 (same as yours) Sopwith 2F1 Camel 1918 Gloster Meteor F. 111 F-16A/B Fighting Falcon
The original Airfix Lightning (with the pointed tailfin), was a really basic kit, which built into a really nice model of the original aircraft, which occasionally overflew my house. The usual aircraft were F4 Phantoms, A10 Warthogs, C130 Hercules, C5 Galaxies, and, once or twice only, a beautiful SR-71 Blackbird. I live within 25 miles of what were three large strategic air bases. Lightnings flew from an RAF base a few miles away. By the time that you had heard them, they were long gone. A great aircraft, sadly missed.
Thanks for the review Harry. I built the 1983 version/boxing as a teenager. Now I need to go find another one N build it again. You know that we HAVE to feed the addiction to the modeling madness. ;-) and as a side note my uncle found four very old Airfix kits up in his attic storage space and the 1/72nd Lancaster BI and Wellington BIII he gave me are molded in the black plastic "Made in England" from the early 1960s with the Roy Cross box art. { just to make you go aarrrrg n drool like Homer Simpson ;-) } The other 2 kits he gave me were the Mosquito F.B.VI & the SB2C Helldiver. The Helldiver being the ancient F.R.O.G. molds that were taken over by airfix. I hope your shoulder is doing good as well as the rest of you N I'm happy that you have a week off to indulge yourself in the hobby. Enjoy your week off from work Harry.
Oh if only I could find a box of vintage kits in someones attic. Although the odd deceased Estate kit comes up now and then selling on Facebook Marketplace by a widow who just looks at the price it was originally bought for and then sells you a bargain. I picked up a complete, and in good condition, Airfix Royal Sovereign for 2 shekels that way. Worth 4 to 5 times as much now.
I remember buying the original silver plastic Airfix Lightning F Mk1A at Woolworths in 1963. I had gone to buy the Hawker P1127 and had a fit when I saw it displayed on the pegboard. I had to round up my mother for some extra cash as it was a Series 2 kit which cost a bit more. Frog did the Lightning P-1 prototype in 1964 and the very nice Lightning F Mk6 in 1967. Those were the good old days of plastic modelling when kits were cheap and cheerful!
Worked on those back in the seventies. 5 Squadron, RAF Binbrook. Fat belly = fuel tank, and even then, the thirsty things needed topping up from a tanker after a very short time in the air.
Hello there Harry being of a similar vintage as your self I remember making this kit the first time round as a boy in the 1960s happy days mate I have rediscovered the hobby the last few years and I love the older kits just made the old airfix Bentley that dates from way back I look forward to seeing your next video all the best from here in the UK 🇬🇧👍😁
The problem with many of the old Airfix decals they are not in register. Airfix are not the only ones with this issue but buying after market decals can fix this.
Good review Harry! I don’t build aircraft kits, but I like to watch a build now and then, and I really like checking them out on the show videos that are sometimes posted. Some of those models are exceptional. I like your idea of regular kit reviews, no matter the subject, as you will review ‘warts and all’, and will make honest comments on quality etc; Keep them coming mate! Hope you are healing OK. Cheers from a very hot south of the border!
I checked Ebay and this "yellow stripe" version seems to be the most common one to be found. Few red boxes and no 1960s antiques. Matchbox also made this airplane btw.
Bonjour Harry, arrrŕrrrrrrrr the clear stand , i love the clear stand , first time ive seen one in years , bring back the clear stand , OK ive had my waffle ! Great review mate, flashing and raised pannel lines , as a 10 year old that was the best bit lol didn't know any difference, 😎😎😎😎have a good one mate
Ah...brilliant mate. I painted mine silver, with my big Sis's make up brush. Then got drop kicked down the garden by said Sis...Just thought you needed to know that
Thanks for the anecdote Dave… Luckily my Sister was much younger. I want to do the silver body with upper royal blue and just fudge the decals to match. Rivet counters be damned.
gave You and Bask da Cat, almost a Shekel, to get you some curry, my friends. Been meaning to do it for a whlle, just got round to it. Many |Thanks , Harry, for so often making my day with your content
I don't remember what brand Lightning I built in the '60s but it was 1/72 scale and could have top mounted fuel tanks and Saudi Arabian decals as options. I started saving all my kit instructions starting in '71 and the JU52/3M sheet has Airfix by Craftmaster but here in the States MPC did use Airfix moulds and sold as the really cool Profile Series that could be built with three decal options and paint schemes.
G'day Harry. Thanks for the review. I don't recall this style of boxing. I was out of modeling by that time and didn't get back in until well into the modern red box era. Good to see the old kit. Airfix, in its various iterations, certainly got good use out of its molds over many decades.
You should build every kit, but of course you can’t do all of them at once. So build it now if you are motivated, or stash it to enjoy at a later stage. If you are collecting, then it will only appreciate in value. But that removes it from the hands of a modeller who would enjoy the build. Weigh your conscience on that Russ.
What might be the new parts that Scalemates claims there were after 1978? It was long ago but I think I had that 1978 boxing and the kit doesn't seem to be any different.
Thanks Harry, I have many fond (and not so fond) memories of kits from that era.

I heard they had a drinking problem… but heck when you are that big and tough, you’re bound to have some vices

Good on you Anthony… welcome back to the hobby
I have managed to find occasional model kit in our Charity shops in the UK mostly old Airfix kits, the only letdown is the decals .
Those decals can often be saved by putting them under ultraviolet light.. or down under just out in the Sun.
@@HarryHoudiniModels thanks for that Harry will have to find a UV light , sunlight is in short supply in the UK all you Aussies have stolen it .

This was the model I painted in British Airways livery. I got hammered! I wonder what happened to it? 🤔
Lovely video of a kit that I knew very well.
Thanks Aaron.

A common Lightning striking more than once? I think there is a proverb in that somewhere.

Hi Harry, Nice review, Thank you👍🏻
My pleasure Yves
Nice kit that one, not bad for it's age.
It was surprisingly good
That is a big plane !
oh boy yes you know it is!

Good on you Ian. Thanks
Lived Near the Humbol factory in Hull England in the 80s . Sadly no longer there
Time marches on… you would need to move to India to be next to their factory now Victor.
@@HarryHoudiniModels The closest Ive been too India was riding a Air India flight frm Frankfurt Am Main to New Your City . Oh the Music. .

Yes surprisingly cleanly moulded for its age Doogle.
Great review Harry, and yes your 1/48 Lighting built up great. It is a big aircraft even when parked next to a Canberra and Phantom
Lovely… it’s an impressive bird
Keep the bag so once the Lightning is built you can make good on that idea and have it shoot at it
You know I will! Already re-bagged and boxed more appropriately
it's always good to have nice quick F.A.R.K.
And if you are a good puppy dawg there will be an equinox W.A.N.K. next week
@@HarryHoudiniModels I'm always a good puppy dog unless you talk to youtube they think im a payed up member of the Leibstandarte SS
Looks not to bad for its age.
Thanks for the review 😜
No problem Basil 👍
Nice review of kit. Not my cup of tea but nice to see whats in the box.
We approve of the music. New isn' it ?
Yes Bask knocked out a new tune.
@@HarryHoudiniModels talented cat!
Looks ĺike a nifty build Harry..I'm fooling with a pink spitfire project over the nxr few days..
Noice
That's a very nice kit. Made in England, what more could a modeller want?
The best of British… yep those were the days
Nice little review Harry. Did you change your theme music?
Yes we had an overhaul of the Channel theme tune… bit more punchy but hopefully unique enough so we don’t sound like anyone else.
❤ cool...just made coffee..all set
good man

Probably just decals George
@@HarryHoudiniModels That can be. New parts made me think of changed plastic parts, not decals.
New fin/rudder to convert the mold, which was originally an F1a into an F3. I think the missiles may be a bit different as well.
