Found a reddit to explain some details on the story, the animation + some of the questions you had:
The ending scene is about Tianpeng's crush on Taiyin (not Chang'e), and the maid he bumped into on the way is Chang'e (Chang'e is an job title, not actually a name. All the maids of Taiyin are called Chang'e). The Jade Emperor (maybe) and the Taiyin were secretly caught by Tianpeng (the Jade Emperor was afraid of affecting his reputation), so he banished Tianpeng to the mortal world. Chang'e, who couldn't forget Tianpeng, descended to the mortal world and became a violet spider. And Bajie, who was demoted to the mortal world, saw Gao Cuilan in Gao Laozhuang and thought it was Chang'e chasing after her. However, Gao Cuilan was scared when she saw Bajie's true body.
After, Bajie traveled west with the boys (official story of Journey to the West) until they got to Pansi Cave.The reincarnated Chang'e (Violet spider) recognized the Bajie at a glance. The two fell in love, and Bajie also spared Violet spider a life here (In original story, the final boss u just beat in Chapter 4 wanted to eat Bajie’s master tang sanzang, and the 7 spiders had to help him so Wuhong and Bajie killed 6, but Bajie helped Violet spider to get away.) With Bajie's daughter, She waited for Bajie until old age... Also, because Bajie had mistaken someone (Gao Cuilan) that time, Violet Spider said before her death, "You are still as stupid as before," which also meant that the old pig dared not recognize their mother and daughter for fear of being punished by the Heavenly Court.
It's way better than shadow step in my opinion especially against bosses maxed out it's broken if you have the right build and equips to go with it !! Makes up close and personal battles SO MUCH MORE FUN
So the reason the Duskveil starts with less HP is because had you not killed the scorpion king first, you would have had a fight with you, him helping, and the Duskveil. Also for your NG+, the needle gets rid of the craziness of the second phase of the final boss.
