Why is Lady Macbeth presented as such a powerful, overly-dominant character in the play since, at the time, a woman's position was primarily subordinate? Does Shakespeare, by doing so, wish to challenge the patriarchy and suggest that female participation is important in his society? But then with Macbeth's reassertion of power by the end of the play, Shakespeare reveals that the efforts of Lady Macbeth were pointless since she failed to elevate her position in society and only benefitted her husband's ahhh i don't understand! What is Lady Macbeth's purpose!! Because without her, Macbeth wouldn't have been able to commit regicide, but then she ultimately loses all her authority. Also.. could you say that because she calls on spirits to 'unsex her', which removes her ability to bear children, she is the result of Macbeth's 'fruitless crown' as, because of Lady Macbeth's lack of femininity, they cannot procreate and thus lengthen his legacy?
Also, in order to have a conceptualised response, that only really explores one key idea eg. if the question was 'How is Macbeth presented as a hero', as in your video, surely you would only explore one way he is presented as a hero in the play but the different ways ( methods) in which he is presented. But then in your video, it said in order for it to be a level 5 response, you would have to consider alternative interpretations for how he's presented as a hero, but surely this would deviate from your one concept? I'm slightly confused by the 'conceptualised response' part of the mark scheme as does it mean to have ONE key line of argument and explore it throughout the essay, or does it mean we need to have MULTIPLE lines of arguments to show all our alternative interpretations?
Your videos are super helpful and I'm sitting an English lit exam next week on of mice and men (1hr) how long on average would you say the essay needs to be? because I'm always so stuck because I tend to write way too much and run out of time.
Do we have to agree to the question for example" How is Macbeth present as a hero" do we look for evidence to support this" hero "or could we be against and contradict the point.
Would you say examiners are going to be reluctant to award full marks? I'm aiming for full marks in English Literature but saying it to myself, I realise what a massive goal that is. Would you say its entirely possible with the right amount of effort? :)
nope, they want this GCSE to work - there will probably be lower grade boundary or an easier question this year... hopefully. You may as well aim for the A*
Ugbaad Yusuf Could it also suggest that since its "fruitless" it wasn't what he had expected, and despite his ambition of becoming king being fulfilled it meant nothing and provided him with no satisfaction.
Reading Macbeth is like trying to read Minecraft enchantment books
I just got my literature result back and lets just say I need to work on context. Thanks for the vid.

"fruitless crown"
suggest that the Macbeth felt like the crown had no purpose on his head
Ugbaad Yusuf Yes, because his Kingship dies with him, without an heir.
