      @@Adronitis Some of Donald Sutherland's best work: The Dirty Dozen, Eye of the Needle, M.A.S.H., Don't Look Now, Ordinary People, and Klute although he has many more! Do you have a feeling that Plutarch became a traitor to the Capitol because of what happened to his relation in the 10th Hunger Games? What is really sad is how much Tigress loved "Corrie" and she even sacrificed for him and he punished her and in return she helped Katniss in the Revolution against him. In the book, the young woman that got bitten by the snake trying to get the paper also turned part snake in her eyes and scales for skin. Looking forward to the next book/film based on the 50th Hunger Games where Haymitch wins with 2 male/2 female tributes from each District. I'd also review the Japanese films Battle Royale and Battle Royale 2 which is similar to this film and Quentin Tarantino's favorites!

    As far as Lucy Gray being related to the current characters, nothing has been confirmed, but popular theory is that her cousin Maude Ivory (the blonde who did the intro at their show) is Katniss' grandmother - her father's mother - due to strong hints in the book:
    - In the book Maude Ivory is mentioned to be able to remember any song after only hearing it once, which is something that the books also mentioned about Katniss' father and Katniss herself.
    - The lake is also something that really only Lucy Gray's family the Covey knew about, yet Katniss' father also knew about it and showed it to her.
    - And of course the Covey used the word "katniss" for arrowhead/swamp potato, as did her father.
    - The last bit is about the song The Hanging Tree: in the book Mockingjay, Katniss mentions that her father just sang it once, and when she and Prim started singing it, their parents forbade them from doing so again, and it was the only time her mother ever got furious at her father (since they learned it from him). In the book of Ballad, Lucy Gray performs it in public only once and tells Coriolanus that she was forbidden by the peacekeeper commander from performing it again; she suspects that it's because it's too rebellious, but she says Maude Ivory likes it.

    Lucy Gray's last name isn't Gray. "Baird" is her family name. All the members of the Covey were named after a person from a ballad and a color ("Maude Ivory", "Billy Taupe", etc.). In Lucy Gray's case, she's named after a character in a Wordsworth poem called "Lucy Gray", so her whole name comes from a ballad and happens to include a color. Read the poem - in it, Lucy Gray gets lost and when they look for her they find her footprints in the *snow* and they just kind of end and they don't know if she lived or if she died. Her fate in BOSAS is the same - we don't know if she's alive or dead.
    With respect to the music - I agree if this were a musical it would have been awful, but it's not. The original trilogy is steeped in a tradition of music. Katniss' mother had been dating the man who would later become the Mayor of District 12, but when she heard Katniss' future father singing, she was swept off her feet and ended up marrying him. He taught Katniss all the traditional songs. Her mom had trouble with the hanging tree song because it was so dark, so her dad wasn't allowed to sing it once her mom found out. Peeta tells the story of first noticing Katniss in kindergarten when the teacher asked who could sing the Valley Song and Katniss immediately raised her hand and started singing.
    So The Hunger Games trilogy is all about music. It ties the people in the present to their past. The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes gives us the backstory on some of this music - turns out Lucy Gray wrote The Hanging Tree and maybe some of the other old songs that Katniss' dad taught her. As others have pointed out, there's some speculation that Maude Ivory may turn out to be Katniss' paternal grandmother. That would be very cool. And my personal wish is that Lucy Gray comes back to 12, marries, has kids, and we know her as Greasy Sae - the character who in the movies (but not in the books) gave Katniss the mockingjay pin.
    While you're looking up "Lucy Gray" by Wordsworth, look up the names Coriolanus, Sejanus, Plutarch, Seneca, and any others you can remember from the Capital. The Hunger Games series transcends the young adult fiction genre, embodying elements of modern dystopian classics with rich historical allusions and timeless themes. These works offer profound commentary on society, power, and human nature, securing their place as significant contributions to contemporary literature.

      Such a great synopsis and evaluation! I remember in the books Katniss didn’t find music particularly useful as they struggled to survive, but it tied her to her father. And Prim was calmed by it, so Katniss sang the songs she remembered her father singing in childhood. The theory that Maude Ivory is her paternal grandmother really resonates with me.

    A lot of the book is the debate between if you’re born evil (that’s what Snow’s teacher thinks, that’s why she pushes the hunger games as something necessary) or if you’re evil because of your circumstances (that’s Lucy, she says we are born good and it’s our responsibility to keep that side of the line). With Snow we get his backstory, not to feel empathic towards him but to see how he chooses his greed over and over again. We only see Lucy from Snow’s perspective that’s why she’s kinda like a “manic pixie dream girl” in a sense it’s because Snow never fully understands her. There’s a quote that says at the end “Goodbye Lucy Gray, he hardly ever knew you” that incapsulates her character perfectly. I recommend watching the video from Clockwork reader, she does an amazing work at explaining this in more depth.

    Not being able to know his mental dialog does us a grave injustice. In the book when Lucy sings to the boy in district 12 he’s actually thinking about how disgusting and disrespectful it was for her to feel something for someone else. He viewed Lucy gray as his from the moment he was given her in the reaping and his idea of love is owning her. He only starts to believe he “loves” her due to the fact she listened to him and did everything he ever said. The moment she realized who he was he snapped in the woods and was on a mission to kill her because he knew he could no longer control and manipulate her. The snake I believe is also non venomous so all of that was his own psychological break
    Add on: the dress she has on in the woods where he “shoots” her is the dress she wore in the reaping as well as the games. She wasn’t wearing what she was when she left the cabin so food for thought

    Y’all something just occurred to me…so the book makes it very clear Snow is basically a total sociopath and possibly a paranoid schizophrenic, as he was shooting at the sky hearing the Mockingjays sing her song (which mind you they only whistle tunes, jabberjays copy) he was shooting AFTER he just placed something wrapped in a sheet into the lake and it sank, only then did he realize Lucy Gray wasn’t around but how much time had past? Note it was raining when they got there and he was dry after putting something into the lake. But he still had the gun…it’s very possible he killed her the moment she started to run away and he blocked it out of his mind as to divert his guilt. Instead he forced himself further into insanity wondering about her. It looked like he was only shooting at a vision of her, I’m starting to believe it was a memory blip as her footsteps stop there but if you look at the ground the mud has a big space that looks like a small body fell there, where her jewelry happened to be. It’s highly speculated Maude Ivory the cousin of Lucy Gray is Katniss and Prims grandmother
    Fun fact: Snakes take cover under whatever they can when it rains, it’s also likely Lucy Gray only dropped it while running and the snake happened to be there, seems to be a lot in that forest.

      @thomasnieswandt8805 Месяц назад +4

      There is a theory what happend (keep in mind, while im counting facts, its never said that they fit together) First of all, the book is waaay darker thn the movie. In the book its hinted very heavy that Tigris, at the age we see her in the opening scene, had to ...well.. sell herself, to keep her family fed. There is a line in the book, Corio is disgusted by Lucys poor performance and says something like "She did it on purpose, as a disgrace" Tigris replies "Well, during the dark days, everyone did stuff they are not proud of today" Corio says "Well YOU didnt"
      and Tigris answeres "I guess you were too young to remember, how BAD it really was....what im trying to say... dont judge someone who had to choose between death and disgrace." But regardless, she stays loyal and became the best stylist of the games, for about 50 -55 years.
      Katniss saying something like "I know this woman, Tigris, the stylist from 4. I remember her from my early years of watching the games, but her face wasnt THAT cat like."
      Katniss is 16. so, her early years remembering must be around the 64 games, 10 years prior....and the winner was... Finnick O´Dare.
      Haymitch explains "Finnick O´Dare, won his games at 14, the youngest ever. Because he was so young, the capitol couldnt touch him, the first couple years, but at 16 ..." Finnick himself says "I havnt had something common as money in years (the people pay) in secrets"
      So basically the theory goes, Tigirs stays loyal to her cousin, until he sold Finnicks body to the highest bidder. At this point, she realized, that her cousin, despite knowing, what she had to do, even prior to that age...starts "selling" the champions. Thats when she desided to move (many people say Snow kicked her out, but Tigirs left on her terms) she became more cat like and it also means, that Tigirs, when Katniss first meets her is about 80 - 83 years old.
      I dont claim that theory, Super carlin Brothers had the Finnick part, plus my interpretation of the interactions.

    • @lovequinn7521
      @lovequinn7521 Месяц назад +2

      Let’s hope there will be some details about Tigris in Haymitch’s book to patch together how the fallout between the Snow cousins happened. Coz as we see her when they were younger, she wouldn’t be supporting the things Coryo did for power. I like the theory about Finnick but I see it happening much earlier coz that would mean that Snow’s only been selling victors for 10 years when we got Haymitch and his multitude of trauma stacked on top of each other bc of Snow. I see Snow not being happy to see victors (district people) thinking that they are really victors bc as he said in the end, they (the Capitol) are the real victors so he would be thinking of ways to make their lives as miserable as possible but also appear glamorous for propaganda.

A lot of people say it is not a good adaptation because it makes Snow more sympathetic than he actually was in the book but I think this was intentional and a really good choice. For visual media, you need to empathize with the protagonist in some way and unlike the book, we don't have an internal monologue that helps us understand the character. So the best next choice is to make the character likeable, at least at the start, so we could even care about them and what happens to them. Making Snow have a little humanity and approachable at the start, makes the story more interesting and compelling in my opinion.

If anything, the book had me questioning how much she was using him to stay alive. She is a performer. It's one reason Snow's obsession with Katniss and Peeta is so interesting. He wants Katniss to prove to HIM that she is in love. He doesn't want her to lie to him. Two things that he didn't know with LGB.
