  • Étude Op. 10, No. 1 in C major is a study for solo piano composed by Frédéric Chopin in 1829. It was first published in 1833 in France, Germany, and England as the first piece of his Études Op. 10. This study in reach and arpeggios focuses on stretching the fingers of the right hand. The American music critic James Huneker (1857-1921) compared the "hypnotic charm" that these "dizzy acclivities and descents exercise for eye as well as ear" to the frightening staircases in Giovanni Battista Piranesi's prints of the Carceri d'invenzione. Virtuoso pianist Vladimir Horowitz, who refused to perform this étude in public, said, "For me, the most difficult one of all (the études) is the C Major, the first one, Op. 10, No. 1."

That technique is really flawless, Now I had a listen again with good headphones and now I can hear harmonics I couldn't hear before. And it reminds me of Cziffra's playing a bit. But I'd slow down the end of the etude or rather rubato. Don't rush

this makes me feel better as when i play it sort of sounds like this and ive been getting alot of criticism for it being disjointed like 4 seperate phrases going up and 4 down instead of 1 big phrase with 2 internal motives or smaller phrases within it both up and down. I feel the problem is that the etude is marked with accents and technically these notes are also important for your rotation so you emphasise them more than intended. like a waterfall going over rocks it should always flow i guess its a good name for it ...but so hard to get this part right. I started thinking of it much more musically and slowed it all down to make it beautiful and hope its gets better from there ...

Bravo! However it must be almost as if you are cheating.. 😂 Chopin meant this Etude to be a study on the technique of rapid rotation (hand) extension and retracting of the fingers. With a 12th as a reach you must almost just roll through the arpeggios with barely having to do the acrobatics someone like myself (10th stretching) would have to go through. So I must ask, is it easier when you can just gobble up these arpeggios? 🤣

Stanislav Stanchev you did a fantastic job in capturing the musicality. In contrast, I’d love to hear about how you feel about op.10 no. 2 (chromatic) or op.26 no.6 (thirds), which I find to be more comfortable with average to smaller hands! Cheers!
