- Firebenders can redirect lightning, but can other types of benders? Iroh said that he was inspired by studying the art of Waterbending, so it's valid to wonder if a Waterbender could redirect lightning. Dante Basco, who voiced Zuko in Avatar: The Last Airbender, is here to answer!

I thought water benders for a brief second cause Iroh mentioned that’s what inspired this technique but then again I think Katara would’ve if that were possible 😭

This honestly makes sense since, I think, Iroh also said that the lightning has to go through the stomach to be redirected. And a firebender's strength comes from their stomach, unlike other benders. So it makes sense why only firebenders can redirect lighting.

It would probably be a class only reserved for the most skilled firebenders. They would probably have a waterbending/healer on sight for emergencies.

@@quequekhariyep. Earth is solid, water is liquid, air is gas, and this one is actually really on the nose, fire would be plasma. The funny thing is, lightning and fire are both literally plasma- fire is literally the air being ionized by the energy from oxidation and lightning is literally a plasma line connecting an electric charge in the sky with a grounding agent.
While it is fun to consider the parallels of lightning and fire in our current-day understanding of such natural phenomena, I wonder if that may be somewhat misguided in understanding the context of Avatar’s lore.
Fire, Earth, Water, and Air were recognized as the four fundamental elements in the western world for literally thousands of years, and there is a rich and vivid history of cultures, magic beliefs, medicine, metallurgy, and experimentation all based on that.
Modern science and understanding doesn’t give you the same context to bending and the elements that the context of the avatar world itself would hold.

The part of Aang redirecting the bolt to the sky instead of the Firelord is something else, shows a pure heart for some reason makes me tear up
Since lightning is created by firebenders it makes sense only them can redirect it.

I always thought only firebenders could channel lighting (take it and shoot it back) but I thought anyone could learn to redirect it like Iroh did to Azula's lighting the first time we saw it happen.
He did say he learned the technique from a waterbender, so I thought that non firebenders could redirect lighting back out of their body in the same direction rather than channeling it back in the opposite direction.

@@taylorhillard4868 Iroh just meant that he copied the movement and principle behind it, like when Korra applied airbending techniques to her pro-bending matches without actually bending air.

OK, hear me out: Yes, only firebenders can redirect lightning through their bodies but what about waterbenders forming a water canal in the air in front of them (with which they have no physical contact) through which the lightning strike flows?
They would have to be really fast to get it set up in time, and the lightning will still arc if not straight up go through to the waterbender
They theoretically could! But they wouldn’t be able to control ANY part of it. They’d just be able to create lightning, after that it could just strike and hit anywhere

or if a metalbender makes a lightning rod?
I would imagine the lighting would just exploded on contact with the water

Zuko is not a lightning master, but he is a speed master. He can run as fast as lightning. Even lighting master Jay Walker sayed that speed is not the element

The fact that Zuko is telling me this makes it Soo much better!
They have to direct the energy through the stomach, which is the fire chakra, so it makes sense only a fire bender could do it.
A firebender's chi is also what becomes fire, as described by Iroh in the first episode. So it makes sense that firebenders and manipulate the chi more than other benders. Other benders make their chi flow in a certain way to manipulate the elements, but only firebenders use it as their bending
But how will they handle the heat of the lightning which is why fire benders are the only ones

Earthbenders can redirect lightning by bending a metal cable as a wire. Waterbenders can use a water tentacle as a wire. Airbenders can redirect lightning by pulling air from the surroundings of the firebender. Vacuum is a powerful insulator.
That would be the loose interpretation of the context.

And earth benders can bend water by making canals, cups even. See how pedantic that logic is? Fire benders are the only ones who can chain lightning unaided by another element.
The first two wouldn't redirect the lightning, just ground it. For the vacuum... interesting idea, since lightning is the electrons looking for the shortest path to ground, if there was a vacuum suddenly in its way, would it just go to a different ground source?
And for the earthbending one, you don't need a metal rod to ground the lighting, just regular earth will do, though apparently the lightning that's shot by firebenders is much more impactful than natural lightning, since I think I remember it can destroy things
If Zuko had not learned to redirect lightning from his uncle, he would have died directly.
Just throwing this out here: Waterbenders (who would be as powerful as Katara) can create lightning. In a natural way, controlling storm clouds, but they can't control the lightning. They can just "recreate" it.
any evidence for this? because water benders cant control water that far away proven by katara on the volcano episode and on the episode when appa got lost when she asked aang to move the clouds so they could trick people to leave the island and when she asked aang to fly up in the air to get water from clouds (it was too high for her to get it from the ground) so unless this was retconned there is no proof water benders can do this

Right, electricity in a storm is generated by the friction of many pieces of ice crashing into eachother a lot. Same goes for sand in sandstorms.
So while Firebenders can generate electricity manually by seperating the positive and negative energies around them (protons and electrons), if Water and Earthbenders can understand the science behind it, they’d be able to generate electricity by extension.
Firebenders can bend lightning
Water benders can bloodbend
Earth benders can bend metals
Airbenders ...?

The actor who played Zuko in the live action did an amazing job portraying the character, but hearing Dante's voice just brings back so much nostalgia. He will always be Zuko.

Thank you Dante Basko! It makes sense logically. Lightning bending is a form of firebending as described by Iroh. It’s only logical that only people who could bend that element have the ability to redirect lightning.

I've never really thought about if non-firebenders could redirect lightning, but honestly that makes sense.. the whole point of redirecting is basically takeing control of the lightning yourself so you don't become the ultimate lightning rod, which in order to do that you would need to be able to lightningbend, which is something only firebenders can do
