Most underrated Straits track in my opinion - really captures that young-love feel with the rhythm, intricate lead fills and lyrics. A true masterpiece from Mr. Knopfler himself. Can't wait to learn it, cheers mate!
Full play along (rhythm parts) starts at 26:55 :) - you can use this later to jam along once I've finished the lessons on all the lead parts and fills! :)
Brilliant guide. I am just getting back into guitars after 20 years away from the strings. Always wanted to play this so I’ll be using this guide to help. Thanks a lot you have a great playing talent 👍
Superb breakdown of the song Justin! One of my absolute favourite Knopfler songs. Remember it well, as it used to run exactly the same time as it took me to drive to work in my small home town in Canada. Cheers!
Great job mate, really well done on this. Dire Straits is not an easy one to pick off, which is why we haven't been able to find songs like this done so well. So this really shows your quality... not just as a player but also as a teacher. I've been listening to this song since I was a youngster. Never thought I'd get to learn and play this song. Thanks to you, I will. Keep em coming.
well done mate!!!! this is how a guitar lesson should be done!!! this is not only my favorite Dire Straits song but is one of my ALL TIME favorite songs!!! THANX and CHEERS FROM BOSTON MASS!!
Thanks for the outstanding tutorial Justin! This is the one I’d been waiting for. I can’t say for sure what Mark did in the studio, but when I saw him perform “Tunnel of Love” live he stayed fingerstyle the whole time to the best of my ability to tell. I do know David and Hal used a pick on the rhythm part and there’s a much later interview with Phil Palmer discussing his use of a pick on the rhythm part during the “On Every Street” tour. I do think Mark used a pick live on “Expresso Love” though. These are old memories, so feel free to correct any errors I’ve made and thanks again.
FYI Justin: I can hear 3 distinctive guitars on Tunnel Of Love. Firstly, there is an acoustic guitar which I suspect is used as a click track. 2. There is a 2nd rhythm guitar play by Sid Guiness which is definitely played using a pick. 3. Guitar track played by Mark using his usual MK technique. Sadly, like you, I have spent 100's of hrs over the years pulling this song apart. However, to my mind the secret behind this masterpiece is the click track played on acoustic guitar. Justin, I think you are great & deserve all the kudos you receive from the pros like MK. Thank You!
This somg is just am absolute materspeice. I don't know why he is among the top 5 guitarists of all time. A huge influence mark has had on me. I truly love all his songs.
Listen to the live version performed at Uniondale, believe its either 24 or 27 minutes long. Every minute is bliss. My favourite part of the performance starts at 9:56. Even includes a little bit of Riders on the Storm.
Nice Justin ! Finally. I played this song besides Sultans of Swing and Money for Nothing in my first band when i was 16 ! I"m 50 now.. LOL. This is a very underrated song. To me this is equal to Bruce Springsteen's The River !! Love this song. Thanks. Greets from Belgium.
Thanks for your honesty about your memory being like a sieve. I can relate to that. It's easy to think that every pro guitar player remembers everything but heartening to know that not everyone does. Memory is half the battle I think.
Thank you Justin for this lesson. You have shed a huge beam of light on the song I've been trying to nail up. Btw, I read some time ago somewhere that it was MK's brother, David, who played rythm guitars on the third album, Making movies, but refused to appear in the sleeve's acknowledgements, as he wanted to leave the group. David didn't stand flying and travelling the way the group had to due to the success achieved. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think it could be true Again, thanks A LOT for this video.
Excelente vídeo, excelente aula. Se você não quiser assistir a aula passo a passo, coloque o vídeo no minuto 26:50, onde ele toca a música toda, em sequência.
Outstanding tutorial (segments). I first heard "Tunnel of Love" used in the "Officer and a Gentleman" soundtrack. I've been attempting to master it ever since.
At the 14:13 mark the words are if you don’t remember: Well it’s been money for muscle and another wirlgig, money for hustle and another girl I dig, another hustle just to just to make it big and rock away rock away oh rock away rock away.
Thank you, Justin. I was waiting for it for a long long time (dire straits is my favourite band and tunnel of love, in my opinion, is one of the greatest songs of all time!). Can't wait for the next part!
One of my favourite Dire Straits song. I remember hearing Mark say that he used 'a piece of plastic' to record some rhythm parts. I don't think he ever did when playing live but then he always had another rhythm player. Something weird happened at the end of this video just before the final play through. At least it didn't interfere with the main lesson part. Looking forward to the solo lesson
It is in standard tuning. Do you mean is it in the key of D minor? The answer to that is yes. Cheers 😊 | Richard_close2u | JustinGuitar Official Guide & Approved Teacher
Hey Justin, just wanna thank you for all the awesome work youve done. Especially on this masterpiece. I hope we can expect some more Knopfler in the future! Perhaps Sailing to Philadelphia? Cheers, take care!
In an interview about how he approaches the guitar, Mark has stated that, for recording, he does use picks on occasion, saying that it "makes for a better recording noise". I don't think he has ever done it for lead guitar, but it often shows up on his rhythm recordings; especially strumming acoustic instruments.
One of my favourite songs. I just started listening more to Dire Straits and Knopfler a few weeks ago and I immediately fell in love with so many songs. Could you do a tutorial on "Solid Rock". Knopfler is an incredible guitar player and a musical genius. Keep up the good work! You are the best guitar teacher on the internet and you have helped and inspired me and lots of others. I'll continue with the lessons on your website now that holidays start and I'm also thinking about buying the music theory course.
I have been waiting since over a year & a half ago when you mentioned you was thinking of doing a lesson for this. Now I know what Im doing tomorrow :) (Well worth the wait) Mark Knofler's playing is just fantastic & I love how you portrayed his style
Hi Justin. Great lesson.been trying to nail this song for years! Btw I’m sure I read a MK interview somewhere back in the 80s where he said he only uses a pick for some rhythm parts but never for solos, so quite possible it was recorded with a pick.
Came for the lesson. Instead found myself singing along to the demo at the end :D I'll come back and learn the chords later, I promise. Right now I need to go listen to Money for Nothing for the 8th million time :D
Supporting little one with the ring finger, i see that i am not alone haha. Bu the way its a great tip to share this, because some of us dont have perfect physicality, you just got to make your own arrengment. Thanks for the "little" details, "how you doin' its Justin" :)
Noob question - from the camera angle it doesn't look like Justin is barring all the strings on some of those chords, e.g. the D @2:22 - can someone confirm if all strings need to be barred for these chords?
You can trust your ears, Justin - Mark does use a pick for certain parts of the Making Movies record, and other ones as well, including his solo stuff. Great vid btw!
Hi Justin, Just two words.. Intelligently Great!!!👍👍👍thank you so very much for this incredible lesson n all your great amazing lessons. I m an your avid fan. Try to teach us "Private Investigation" another one of my Dire Straits favourites. Thanks and regards, Joe Vaz
Mark did in fact use a pick in the studio sometimes. he also uses a pick live on the alchemy concert, the song Expresso Love. he has also used a pick several times in the studio through the years ;) great lesson Justin :D
What's the next pickup? Looks like a filtertron but seems to be std humbucker size? Sounds great! ...and, when I saw the title, I was hoping you were gonna bust out a dobro and a slide and teach us Water of Love. Just a thought.

Justin, what do you think of Knopfler Local hero (going home)? Especially the version from Nimes
Nice to see your'e covering some classic Knopfler lately. Loving it.

One of my favorite Dire Straits songs, especially the live version from Alchemy. Thank you for the lesson Justin!
Fantastic tutorial...
One thing is to learn how to play this master peace.
But to create such a timeless song is just mind blowing.

Mark Knopfler, by his own words, uses a pick while recording rhythm parts on an album. Check out youtube clips of his "master class".
This news has officially blown my mind.
Shud try put thumb & index finger together...they make a decent pick substitute, yet can still do fingerpicking MK style-ish. :-)
MK uses 3 fingers while playing so its no different than using a pick
This is why David was "sacked" he couldn't play the Rhythm to this live.
@@grimreaper-qh2zn I thought he left

Thank you so much Justin for this wonderful and high quality lesson.
This song could be all day long and still too short. MK’s finest.
Yesss.

Great lesson .... thanks very much.
How did you got to that sound? Which affects are you use?
Ive been waiting for this for YEARS ! THANK YOU SO MUCH SIR
Great, the play through made me feel I am listening to the isolated album track.
What a performance! This is the first time I consciously heard all the little nuances that male the song groovy. Thank you!
Brilliant!
Thanks again!!

That’s what I call it! I’m only a year in, but I’m Knopflering everyday.
Incredible song and incredible lesson as always!
Cheers!
Thank you for sharing this with us all : ) God bless you!
Thanks Justin. I grew up listening to Dire Straits because my dad loves it and this song is amazing!
This has been my favorite song since i first heard it when around 12 or 13 years old, excellent lesson Justin, excellent lesson.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart Justin. It‘s amazing work and I will finally be able to permeate one of my favourite tunes 🙏

Great stuff thanks Jason.
This is superb, as always. A Going Home (local hero) lesson would be good too.... 👍🎸🙂
F L try and work it out yourself it’s pretty easy it’s all the d major scale pretty much
To think he did all of that with just power chords is just mind boggling. Thanks for your efforts. That playalong is epic.
Btw, I have recommended this to some friends of mine as well
13:14 passing Csus4 17:10 pretty to me 22:00 chorus 26:55 full 28:10 step up from A

At least at "Live on BBC" in 1980 Hal Lindes also used a pick to play the rhythm guitar part. There is a video on youtube :-)
