The JAS Gripen was involved dropping guided bombs on a rapid fire. A huge forest fire in difficult terrain in Sweden. It was a very effective method to extinguish fire because of its suppressing and disruptive force on the oxygen. Expensive but cost effective!

So bombs were used..but not specifically to sort of break the landscape up so the fire couldn’t continue to spread but instead to steal oxygen from the area and actually extinguish it? I can’t imagine being the person pitching that in a super serious meeting, that we’re going to bomb the fire to put it out. Because you know people like me who don’t understand science at all are going to look at you like you’re suggesting putting fire out with fire.

This was a special case, since the fire was at a military range, with unexploded ordonance in the terrain. So since it wasn't safe for firefighters out there, they decided to experiment by using a bomb. Specifically to suffocate the fire with the blast wave.

Kudos to both firefighter and air force for setting it up and going through with it. Personally I applaud the use of our military assets to support our whole society in peacetime.

@@rayceofhistory That bomb was an experiment to see if it worked, it did. The idea came from artillery ranges where they used to extinguish fires caused by one shell by shooting a second one in the same place. If the wind had turned and the fire had threatened the town of Mora, dropping more bombs were something the thaught about trying.

Love the mis-translations sometimes.
6:45 - "starts cheese". Should be "starts east". The Swedish word ost both means east and cheese.

6:43 translation fail. They are not supposed to "start cheese" but to take of eastwards!
