Then I did two years of city college where I failed more than half my classes and got put on academic probation.
I was feeling hopeless and incapable for a while but in light of some realizations and new life goals I know now that I can try harder, I can get As, and I can succeed - it was never impossible, I legit just believed it was.

I'm in the same situation. 20 years old, city college, academic probation. Not proud of it obviously, but I've only recently taken to heart that it comes down to daily and hourly decisions and being attentive and reactive to bad habits. I wish you the best as well, just remember that even though it sucks it's not the worst position to find yourself in the world, we still have an open opportunity, though it feels squandered.

You can do it man. I was a lazy fuck because I didn't have issues getting good grades without studying or putting the work in, until I started college. After some really humbling failures, I managed to get comfortable with how much time I needed to spend studying and the correct ways to do it. It all boils down to consistency and being smart about it. Pay attention in classes, learn to take good notes, always review what you learned that day on your corresponding subjects, read the chapter ahead of time, and always ask questions to your teacher when necessary. If you're really shy to ask questions in the classroom, there are working hours your teacher provides for you to do so privately. Avoid cramming as much as possible, use it as a last resort, although it won't be that effective.

Based on the information you provided, it seems that you are struggling with maintaining focus due to stress and fear of failure. Here are some suggestions that may help you overcome these challenges and increase your productivity:
Acknowledge and manage your stress: Stress can be a major obstacle to concentration. Take some time to identify the sources of your stress and find healthy ways to manage it. This could include practicing relaxation techniques, engaging in physical exercise, or seeking support from friends, family, or professionals.
Set realistic expectations: It's important to set achievable goals and not put too much pressure on yourself. Break down your tasks into smaller, manageable chunks and celebrate your progress along the way. Remember that consistent effort and improvement are more important than perfection.
Create a conducive study environment: Ensure that your study environment is free from distractions and promotes focus. Minimize noise, keep your phone away, and create a comfortable and organized workspace. This will help you maintain concentration and avoid unnecessary interruptions.
Practice deep work techniques: Deep work involves immersing yourself in a task with full concentration and minimizing distractions. Experiment with different techniques, such as the Pomodoro Technique (working in focused bursts with short breaks), time blocking (allocating specific time slots for different tasks), or using productivity apps that help you stay focused.
Develop a consistent study routine: Establishing a regular study routine can help train your mind to focus at specific times. Set a fixed schedule for studying and stick to it as much as possible. Consistency will help create a habit and make it easier for you to get into a focused mindset.
Take care of your physical well-being: Proper sleep, nutrition, and exercise are essential for maintaining focus and productivity. Make sure you prioritize your health and incorporate healthy habits into your daily routine.
Remember, progress takes time, and it's important to be patient with yourself. Celebrate your achievements along the way and continue to strive for improvement. If you have any specific questions or need further assistance, feel free to ask. Good luck on your journey towards success!
      Best regards, TalkBud

I summarise as much as I can for ones who wanna get the points fast
    ##High quality work= time spent * focus ##
*Time spent is limited - should focus on how can we work deeply How intense can we work
Grades are the consequences and byproducts of how well u work.
The systems that produces those amazing grades
    Plan -reflection-techniques
    Most important -Consistency and focus
By focusing on how well u can focus, we can focus the daily life. outside studying ,the quality of life in general.
We gotta put the right inputs (diet ,sleep and exercise )to produce the right outputs.
The environment (minimum requirements) what around u to study? ( remove phones, distractions) environment need to be congruent with your goals
We need to focus how to improve our skills -tracking how often and how well u study,( on Friday ,weekly check your study plan)
Keep that amount of time for constistency
to reach to the deepest state of focus .
Focus on studying the same time everyday consistently ,stick to the plan, then our body will know ,won’t be any questions. will Procrastinate less.
Reduce the amount of friction which we can’t study
Streamline the process as much as possible
Make sure the distractions come in as little as possible
Have the street counter or habit tracker , not to lose the streak . check daily,Keep track of your study routine , keep a heatmap.
Make sure that this is our part of our identity , to embody and become proud of , actions will reflect u, this will be the result of who u r
Put the hard work if we wanna become better.

just used chatgpt to summarize jame's speech:
      - High-quality work is a result of the time spent multiplied by the intensity of work.
      - Grades are a consequence of how well one works, and the goal should be to develop a system that produces good grades.
      - Consistency and focus are key components of a good study routine.
      - The environment in which one studies can have a significant impact on productivity.
      - Improving the skill of focus can be achieved by tracking progress, experimenting with techniques, and increasing the intensity of work over time.
      - Consistency in studying is important for producing results over a period of time.

i feel like my brain is just hard wired to just distract itself. i always feel like i need something stimulating. this could come in many forms: making the lesson more engaging by using an unconventional format (maybe a video or even a game), or even by being in a "competitive" envorinment where i am reviewing my notes with my friends and we all ask each other questions.
even when something is due tomorrow my brain absolutely doesn't wanna pick up the pace and focus T.T kinda hard to study alone but at the same time my mind gets distracted when with others and also my social battery doesn't even last that long. thank u for sharing these tips

My daily work routine is as follows:
    > Stop studying after 8pm + eat diner watching the news + read a paper book at 9pm
    > Wake up between 7am and 9am + shower + dress up
    > Start 25/5 Pomodoro with chrome extension + Lay down with closed eyes during breaks thinking about what you just studied
    > Long break of 30-40min every 4-5 Pomodoro + do house chores or activities with silence to rest your brain
    > Repeat
It is important to have broad subjects in mind like maths, programmation and finance to improve on the long term without school projects. I prefer to use books and research papers rather than google and youtube.

@theren2486 Pomodoro sounds rly bad and a pussy way of working (no offense btw). The best strategy for the best results I believe is just getting into the right mindset of getting shit done, putting your phone away, and just sitting down for 2-3 hours straight, full focus on what your doing. Afterwards ull find you will feel much better and have accomplished as much as u are capable for the day. A lot of successful people use this method of deep work. Lex Fridman does like 2 or 3 daily which is nuts. Research deep work. Thats how you get the most down for less time and ultimately save your mental health and respect your testosterone if you are a man

The most important thing is to have a specific goal you are working towards and if that goal means enough to you, you will do what is necessary to accomplish it. When i was younger i used to procrastinate a lot and not care if i fail, but now when other people also depend on me doing well and now that i really want to accomplish certain things, studying hard comes naturally and when you do finish such tasks, it is one of the feelings in the world

on a somewhat related note regarding the "we have to make sure that this is a part of our identity now".
Its something I have never thought about in the lifting community, but its so true. The months I am most consistent are the ones I see myself as a 'gymbro' and its here I see the most progress. I had a friend who worked out on and off for years now and he never gained an impressive physique or notable change, and after I started training myself I found out he never saw himself as a guy who lifts "competitively". He never made a program or looked into different the exercises, he just went gym to have fun and feel good about himself. All the other guys in my class who lifts regularly talk about lifting / show off their physique and its 100% become a part of their personality.
Its the same with my friends who study 2-3 hours/day. Its almost all they talk about (the assignments) and they want to show it off as well (how fast/well they cleared an assignment)
Thank you for this advice, it will surely help when I go back to school in a few months

Hey there James! I just wanted to drop how inspiring your dedication is. You're very down to Earth, and are very open as to how 'human' you are. It's a great reminder for me that we all have the capability to work this hard, and actualize our potential. Your example is especially meaningful to me as a person who feels so underwhelmed by their achievements, knowing full well that they have the capability of achieving excellence.
I'm a 19 year old University student, studying Physics and Programming with aspirations of getting into MIT. For most of my life I was very complacent in regards to where my life was going. I was raised in poverty and didn't have access to many things growing up. I was a very resentful and cynical teen as a result, but I began to start turning things around late into highschool. I knew from my peers and my performance in school that I had so much latent potential, but it was no one else's responsibility to articulate it except mine. So I busted my ass, enough to get accepted into a UC. Well, now is where the work really begins haha. I knew I had to make a lot of sacrifices to become the person I wanted to be, time in particular. I sometimes feel a bit down, that while my floormates are out socializing and staying up late, I'm in my dorm or at the library studying. But seeing people like you in action is such an inspiration, and it reminds me why I'm doing any of this.
I especially resonate with your goal of setting your mother up with a nice house, I strive to do the same :)
Keep up the work, you're touching people's lives.

as a person with adhd, the "deep working" part was really interesting to me because that is my natural state in studying, and in most activities actually (not saying this is everyone with adhd, some have the exact opposite issue, i think i also got a bit lucky in that aspect). I don't think I could work "shallowly" ig even if I tried, which can be a blessing but also a curse in disguise because my brain doesn't distinguish between productive & non-productive stuff so I could just become hyperfocused on the most useless things and wouldn't be able to get myself to stop really. But the consistency is definitely something valuable to be, my real struggle is just starting with something, the procrastination, and also taking breaks in between. Thankyou for this video, just wanted to share my perspective

There's way too many comments for you to read so I doubt you'll get this but, in case you do...On the book The Talent Code, Daniel Coyle touches on an often underestimated productivity/motivation/learning element which is having a hero/exemplar/idol. Having someone to look up to, learn from and perhaps wanting to be like is a powerful and effective way to stay adherent to your goals. Your videos are amazing and I am sure many people here, including myself are benefiting for having your example documented and shared. I'm 17 now, maybe I'll come back here in the future and take a look for myself. Anyway, it's been a month since I started studying for the YKS exam held in my country. In the end, the department I want to win is "Genetic Engineering", that is, to study the basis of human beings. Your videos have always inspired me and continue to be, thank you for that. We can't always expect our time or energy to be full, let's just say I don't think so. As a result, the intensity and weight of the work or lessons change day by day. The important thing is to resist it as much as we can. If anyone is reading this, please don't forget to trust yourself.
God sees you as important, after all, he created you thinking that the whole universe would be incomplete without you, so you can feel even more special. I hope your life always goes the way you want, take care of yourself! ❤

    📝 Summary:
To study better, it's important to focus on working deeply with intense focus. Grades are a result of effective work, so developing a highly effective study routine is crucial. Consistency and focus are key factors, along with planning, reflection, and effective study techniques. Taking care of physical well-being through diet, sleep, and exercise is important. Creating a conducive study environment and removing distractions, like keeping the phone away, helps improve concentration. Tracking study sessions and maintaining a consistent routine enhances productivity. Deep focus is achieved in silence or with minimally distracting music. Reducing friction by organizing materials, maintaining a clean workspace, and having a clear plan aids studying. Lastly, adopting a dedicated and focused learner mindset makes studying a natural part of the routine.

    Hello,
I was struggling the whole last year to get really good grades in my uni. Your videos helped me going straight and kept me motivated, even if it meant 14h/day of work. Having bad thoughts and insomnia every day even during exam sessions.
Now I can finally enjoy the results of my work by getting selected for an international exchange year. Thank you really from Switzerland !
