I have been using Remnote for almost two months. In the beginning yes it was all free, but now it has started demanding subscription for things like image occlusion, which as you know is vital to studying anatomy. Is this a foreshadowing of what is to come? Will more and more features be unavailable for free? I made it my default studying up but now I am worried that I will eventually lose data. Should we stick to (free) anki???

I never understood how people could spend like 12hrs studying on the weekend, even when finals came around I didn't study that much. (I just graduated from high school so this was my experience in senior year)I usually gave myself one hour per day at home to finish everything and 2hrs max per day on weekends because I found that having slept well and a clear head allowed me to study more efficiently. And it also helped not to procrastinate when you know you won't be there sitting for hours and not being able to finish your work, it's way easier to get one hour down and put stuff away.

University is a lot different! I was that kid in high school who just paid attention in class and could count on one hand how often I studied throughout the year. In college, you gotta study. Professors often won’t teach you everything in class (not enough time). Not trying to scare you though! It all depends on your college, your major, how well you retain information, etc. I found I had MORE free time my freshman year than I did in high school (because they keep you in class 8 hours a day, in college you control your own pace *also didn’t have any sport responsibilities*). In the end, PLEASE don’t fall into the trap of studying too much. Use your time well, pay attention in class, and study what you feel rough on. As an engineering student, wayyyyy too many of my peers focus too much on school and are missing out on a lovey social life. Each person has a different reason for studying too much, but they’re almost always bad ones. Going into my Junior year now and I almost always leave Fridays and Saturdays for just having fun and goofing off. Gotta have some time for yourself on the other days too though!

I only write the names (no definitions), and I then realign them from the most important to the least important. I then type out (in my own words) the definitions of the terms without looking at notes. I double-check and repeat. This system has helped me a lot in exams.

And currently, I am on the verge of completing half of the curriculum by myself within 3 months. I study like 2 hours a month lmao. I rarely ever take notes and I definitely wouldn't ever review them. The way I retain information is by asking questions in class constantly. A solid 10-20 questions per class per day and I no joke have not gotten anything under an A for any exam or final grade.
Studying works for some people but not everyone learns things the same way. For some people, studying might even make you do worse because reviewing notes on a topic that you don't really understand isn't going to change anything. You didn't understand when you wrote them down, you won't understand when you review them. For these people, I recommend instead asking questions about things you don't know. Don't be afraid to ask questions you assume everyone else already knows because if you don't know, most likely others don't know either and you'll be doing them a favor by asking. Look up external reviews and explanations. Sometimes I'll reference video essays on the topics that I'm trying to write about and form my ideas based off of that. Maybe even try to explain/teach the concept to someone else. Often times you'll find that you understand it a lot more than you thought you did because in trying to find a way to explain it in simple terms that others will understand, you'll find yourself understanding it even more.
If studying doesn't work for you, then don't beat yourself up over it. If you're spending 10 hours a week studying or 10 hours a day studying and it's doing nothing, then you're wasting all that time when you could be trying different methods. This idea that you NEED to study to be successful in school is silly. When I first started working on cars, I could've read the service manuals a hundred times over but it never would've worked as well as actually doing hands on work. When I was learning physics, I could memorize all the concepts and formulas sure, but none of it stuck as much as me connecting the concepts to my real world experiences.
But of course, like I said, everyone learns differently. If studying works for you, then more power to you. It's never worked for me and I'm okay with that. As long as you find something that works, that's what matters most. When my students tell me that they just don't understand the material, I ask them to explain what they do know to the best of their ability and I'll fill in the gaps, but for the most part they actually do understand the material and just let that uncertainty be the reason why they got answers wrong. They doubted their answers so they changed them to what they thought was right, only to be wrong. That's the way the cookie crumbles I guess

Sociology has really helped me out massively in that respect.

    • @animationcrate
      @animationcrate 2 года назад +4

my advice for you is to not get so hung up on the details. What matters is that you become a civil engineer, it doesn't matter if you do it in 5 years, 10 years, or 30 years. All that matters is that you end up accomplishing your goal.
To that end, I will say this, make sure that every A and B is a moment to be proud of yourself, and everything lower is a learning experience, not a punishment. Grades are meant to tell you where you're at, not a punishment and certainly not for your parents or anyone else to look down on you for. Far too many students were raised in a way where they do everything for everyone but themselves. They get good grades and the first thing they do is show their parents because they want to make them proud. That's fine, but they should really be proud of themselves first and foremost. Never set goals for others, it's your life.
Lastly, you might experience "senioritis" your senior year, but I'm here to tell you that there's no such thing. It's not you being lazy and just wanting to graduate, it's the fact that your whole life you were told that graduating high school was a huge thing and that it's a massive goal. It's been your whole life and you don't know anything else. What's really going on is that you just achieved a big goal for the first time and you just don't know how to handle it, so you ultimately feel underwhelmed, and now that you finished this goal, you no longer have any drive to "reach the end" AKA "your goal" so you really need to make sure to have lots of goals ready. Keep your eye on being a civil engineer and stay motivated. It's your life and you're the one who decides how far you make it, so make the most of it and above all else, enjoy the journey. You'll only ever get to enjoy youth for so long and you'll never get to redo this, so seriously, take it slow and breathe a little. Enjoy what you have and minimize your regrets. Participate in school events, go to games, go to the dances, join clubs, and just enjoy being young with minimal responsibilities. Worry about being a "grown-up" once your bones start hurting lol.

Interesting how different my experience was. I was a high performing student who barely studied all through tertiary education, and I did almost nothing except learn in class. Usually taking notes at the rate at which I was understanding the lecture, letting myself fall behind to think if I needed to.
In some harder courses I had to study a bit for the exam in order to learn the things that you only learn by applying your knowledge, but in most courses, it was only a matter of confirming my understanding.
I found a focus on understanding rather than optimizing for the exam gave me a bit of an advantage in classes whose professors liked to throw in never-before-seen trick questions on their finals.

Last year I barely studied, maybe like just 1 or 2 hours a week to review some things. I didn't pay much attention in class either. My average was 96.4 and I got sad because I wasted so much potential that could help guarantee me some scholarships. This year I am taking advantage of every second during school and would spend 1-2 hours max at home if needed. I'm always ahead on everything now, today I literally ran out of things to do in class and started playing krunker. I'm part of those that hate school most, but now I know that the happier option is putting some effort during school so that it won't have too much of an effect on my daily life. I have more time to improve on myself and actually set personal goals. Letting 3 years of highschool impact my personal life this much was a mistake, but at least I'm fixing it for this year.

If you're in high school, it's simply not worth it to spend that many hours a day for school. Whether it's just as a personal challenge or if you want to be able to go to top, top schools. These top colleges look at the student overall. Their school spirit, their involvement in their own high school, and extracurricular activities. Another thing that is heavily looked at is SAT and ACT scores. I don't remember off the top of my head but many top schools require a score of something around 1300 and 25 respectively (it's different for every school).
If this is for college, however, it's still not worth it, no matter the major, to go for high honors. Just aim for 3.2 or higher. Unless you have a scholarship that requires a minimum GPA or if you're in a program like nursing where you need a higher minimum GPA.
Schools/employers don't just look at GPA or scores. They look beyond that. They look at how motivated you are for your school and for your future. Any clubs that you join or any orchestra/band or any competing that you do for your school they'll look at all of that. You can even pick up competing in math or reading or anything of the such.
Anyway, I wish I could help you a lot more but I really can't since I don't know your situation that well, I would love to know more about it so that I can assist you more. Feel free to DM if you'd like.

Hey so as someone with ASD (which is aspergers, but with a more appropriate label since aspergers was a Nazi doctor), saying that anyone with aspergers is a genius, though it is flattering can also be incredibly damaging towards the neurodivergent community. Plus many people with ASD are 2E, which means though they have certain cognitive attributes that help them learn, there will also be certain aspects that are below average and thus need support. So when ASD people advocate for those supports, people will assume they don’t need them because of the autism.

    *Wake up at 7am
*Start studying from 8am to 11am
    *Rest for 1 hour
    *Study from 12am-2/3pm
It really is myth that you need to spend 40+ hours on studying. It's much better to work 30 hours for an entire year than burn yourself out within 1 semester.
Note: I'm in engineering so we don't really need to memorize things so not sure if my metbod works for things like medical school

OMGGGGG, I DIED WHEN YOU SAID "...and for those who are at home watching me talk about studying right now while you're actually studying with your book open in front of you." AS I AM SITTING HERE WATCHING YOU WITH MY TEXTBOOK OPEN IN FRONT OF ME... x__x; But real talk, more reasons to stop multi-tasking and be more intentional with my actions :) Also, can't wait to use those flashcards!

Although I agree with every point in this video, I have to emphasize the fact that time is equally as important as the focus.
Actually Cal Newport said himself that productivity = time*focus.
I think people forget just how knowledge can compound: the hours you put on in first year of University helped you understand the 2nd year faster all the way through year 4. You can't cheat time. The longer you can study intensely, the more productive you become.

Agree to this! That's why I'm reading and trying to be productive than before. Elementary to Senior High school I was so uneducated, stupid, playing games, wasting time, and focus to my passion. Now I'm in college I'm trying to improve myself. I think I can be a better student if I'm always be productive everyday.

As a teacher, I'm more than happy to help my students that come to me after class and just ask what to focus on. I wont give the exact answers but I'll definitely point them in the right direction. Often i know the exact areas my students are struggling with just based on class discussions. Usually during the lesson itself I'm just so time contrained that i can't answer everyones questions.

Man, 2 hours a day for 2 or 3 weeks it's great for studying, the thing is people normally "study" ten hours the night before exams and then asks Why did I fail if I studied so hard? :/

In the starting of our year our energy is pretty much high for doing better in studies so at that time if you take your energy as an advantage to learn more then it will get easy for you (in future) to study.

As a lazy ass med student, I like to call it: intermittent cramming.
Basically you study intensely, but minimally. It's like a mode that you toggle on and off and it's basically making everything faster and quicker: understand faster (especially physiology and difficult topics), read faster, memorize faster.
Weirdo tip n2: studying in a dark environement w/ closed curtains, minimal room decoration and clutting. And VERY BRIGHT lamp focused on your desk. Really help memorize things faster. I studied in my basement because last semester for exams (cuz too hot in my room), and I have never been so productive that in that period, seriously. The best study room is perhaps an underground "interrogation room". Isolated both from time, noise and outsides lights. It's like your memory absorb so much more in less time.

I’m one of these people who barely studied and graduated Top 10 with a 3.95gpa. My secret is to be active in class. I do the homework, I ask questions when I’m confused, studying is useless if you don’t know how to apply what you learned in a real life example. Try teaching it to your friends. I’d do homework 2-3 times over until I learned how to do a process step by step. When it comes to memorization of definitions I use flash cards and go through the whole pile until I get them all right. If I miss one definition I start over from the beginning, no excuses. My study session isn’t over until I get the whole pile correct
