Watched this with my son, for whom I could not afford piano lessons. As he forgot me (in the middle of a sentence), and turned toward the computer screen, I hope Mr. Duke had a big smile (that megawatt grin!) on his face there in The Big Conservatory In The Sky.
My great mentor since my teen years in the mid 70s, and everytime I see or hear this man play I'm always learning something new and innovative. It lets me know how far I have come and that I will never get to the virtuoso level that George played at 60 plus years ago but I'm good with that. It's an endless learing process and I love it.
So pleased to see this. In the massive trashpile of footage that is youtube, priceless moments in time are presented equally to all. Though its strictly musical at the surface, videos like this are able to truly progress the mentality of mankind. Emotional connection beyond all else.
' FIRST THINGS FIRST!!! NOBODY PLAYS LIKE GEORGE DUKE ' THIS BRUTHA IS SOOOOOO ABSOLUTELY PHENOMENAL! HE'S GOT MAADD SKILLS AND HIS IMPROV IS ON SERIOUS FUNK POINT!!! 💯💣💥🤜🤛👊🤙🤘👍!
Oh my god, I can't believe this is on here. I taught myself how to play the piano and when I was a teenager at a jam session a retired fusion drummer gifted me this on cassette, I lost it in the moves but now I can watch it as a more musically seasoned adult, thank you.
Thanks for this video. Not only was George a great performer, but he was an amazing educator. I love his discussion about soloing over 4th chords at 50:40. What a brilliant man! I will be encouraging my piano students with this idea. Thank you for posting.
This is awesome. Mr. Duke has a B.A. in performance (trombone) from the SF Conservatory of Music and an M.A. in composition from SF State University. He knows of what he speaks. Truly awesome record of an impressive artist. R.I.P George Duke.
THANKS TO GEORGE DUKE FOR HELPING SEE NEW CREATIVE POSSIBLITIES WITH THE PRACTICE AND MUSIC THEORY OF MOTIFS, SONG STRUCTURE , MUSIC TEXTURE, CHORD VOICING and constant practice. Now see music theory as a toolbox I can use on music ideas in my head.
We .miss you professor George Duke, the man was so full of. Music, he was great. Someone said that he was brain Culbertson daddy, lol. They share the same birthday. January 12, and both can really play amazingly. That's funny. Brain Culbertson. Daddy .oh and they both. Love. Wine. And so do I. And I love great jazz music. Miss you professor. Dude.
Thanks Chris....this is a rare gem indeed ....effortlessly breezing thru this so naturally....he was so amazing man! The album with reach for it i thought was his best the brazilian styles and the funk and jazz rock infused....and the song the way i feel with josie james just outstanding that group was the noise man!
As a fan of both George Duke and his theme for Soul Train and its music awards. I think the George Duke estate to release an album for his work on television and film scores. His themes for Soul Train from 1987 and 1993 (with Everette Harp and Naughty by Nature) must be included on the album.
Not everyone is as animated as you. Some people feel the music internally, without screaming, etc. You're probably a Merry type in Socionics, so you crave that Fe expressiveness. But for Serious types, it's a different story.

I like to think that when someone discovers jazz or funk, Mr. Duke is up there shaking his “Dukey Stick”. 🎹🎶🎵
Indeed!

He was a very fine gentleman. Good man--and very talented. RIP George, sir!
So much love for Mr Duke, inspired me to pick up piano and music production 10 years ago!
Beautiful musical conversation. Practice and experiment. No better advice.

And the thing is, is that he was every bit as good on tertiary harmony as well. He could make a lowly triad sound like more than what it is.

When I was in college, I was introduced to, FACES IN REFLECTION And FEEL. Been a fan ever since. He went far too soon. RIP Mr Duke.

6:22 Electronic Musicians be like “Yeah, this is great, we can play this all day.”
Where is Part One of this lecture please? Thanks.
Surely this is early 80s? Thanks for posting.
Yes, late 80`s !
No it isn't actually!
At the time I made the comment, the video was labelled as a 1970s recording. Title has been changed at some point in the intervening years.
VIDEO ALIGNMENT!!! lol
Pick pick pick.
Are these guys alive? That's George Duke. I'd be clapping.... lol
must be great to teach ice blocks
They are pretty dead, aren't they? Of course, they don't have microphones on them. It's not a concert.

*THERE ARE NO EXCUSES!* for being ignorant anymore! You can learn almost anything from a *HUGE* amount of masters on RUclips. *CRAZY!*
What's that opening? Cobham/Duke?
It was from frank zappa I think
the way he thinks microtime is great
30:51 I wonder who he meant?
