Great job. Building one right no, this is good inspiration for me. Got the antenna stuff, got the xiegu s90 and going for the frame, of aluminum pipe. TNX for sharing, 73 de 4x6yw, Israel.
We basically want to operate without separate ground wire, just use the framework as counterweights, its more portable this way. But Kai has made a contactpoint for a random length of grounding wire to bring up the efficiency of HF if desired.
This backpack looks exactly like the ones the Civil Air Patrol was using, right down to the handset and dual antenna mounts. What makes it a bit unusual is the mounting for the FT-857. The packsets that CAP was using was intended for 2 radios in a crossband application, and painted blue, now obsolete due to new requirements. But I now know know how I want to mount my FT-897!
No problem - the antenna is originally from a military set up - AT-271A, but Buddipole in the USA also delivers some nice whip antenna that fits perfectly on Backpacks.
Thank you Lennart! LB1QF Kai has several whips he uses for his backpack setup, but the antenna in this video en a AT-271A military whip 113.5" (2.88 meter) long.
you got it! the frame looks nice but aluminum or titanium if you can would be the best thing to do. Backpacking you actually have to weigh your gear and that will give you more distance on your hikes. you know, it becomes a science if you are a serious backpacker.cheers
Understandable. Thanks for the information. Decided that something like this done. I don't want to mess with auctions, because as a probe of the HF put something from the Army more SU I have it easier to find.
There is a big difference in the conductive properties of stainless steel and alumnium, and the first edition does very well on most bands without additional grounding. But the issue with the aluminum frame, it is as little ground potential that it requires additional ground wire on most bands to achieve a reasonable SWR results
No breakout box and no preamp, we only put a std 8 pin mic connector on the H-250 cable and use a Heil HSTA YM adapter to fit the radio - it works very well and gives good TX sound.
Good invention for "Sota activations," seems quite comfortable. nice site, I was just there 11/09/2011, there would have been nice to meet you. 73's Luis
Yes you have got it all right, antenna I VHF/UHF 1/4 wave - antenna II HF (STD Military). Buddipole has some good portable antennawipes and A123 batteries. The H-250 handset can you get from E-bay. Good luck, 73'de LA1DSA
I think the H-250 will work on a CB radio too - you have to try :) This is the wiring from the handset, hope it will help you. A-Black = Ground B-White = Audio (Spk) C-Green = Ptt D-Red = Mic Good luck - 73's
I am not sure what you are talking about. Grounding of the entire unit? or the frame? for grounding purposes you can easily run a separate grounding system with copper wire. In reality the specific resistance of aluminum is not much different than SS, copper is a much better conductor than SS, so you could run a 14 gauge wire nicely for grounding purposes. Can you please explain your grounding system?
I've got two 250 handsets like yours. I can't wait to change out their connectors with something a bit more useful to the FT-817 and the IC-706 i have. Soooooo Cool. More Videos! More Pictures!
Thanks for watching Dan - look in your operating manual for the the connector diagram and match it with this: Handset H-250 A-Black = Ground B-White = Audio (Spk) C-Green = Ptt D-Red = Mic Good luck - 73's
Ok. Ask, and that antenna for HF diappazone? The same often work on the FT-817 and the same came to the thought that something like this done. Sorry for my bad English.
@MIronLance TNX for visiting my RUclips :) The TX audio from the H-250 in this setup is perfect for DX - beautifully narrow and works very well with low power (20 watt) 73'de LA1DSA
I like the military H-250 style handset you're using. Where did you find an adapter or is it homemade? I'm about to start building my own backpack radio built around the Yeasu 8900R. If you can provide any useful tips I'd appreciate it! 73! Richard S. Fort Worth, Texas USA KF5RHI
@SteelWolf13 -Found it. Page 2. @TJgas This is a homemade project in aluminum / stainless steel. Welding, mechanical and green paint for upgrade to the military look, is done by my good friend LB1QF Kai from Norway.
@M1ZXG buddipole LB1QF Kai is using a A123 batterypack 13.2 V/6.9Ah battery in this setup. It works very well - you can order from Buddipole I have encouraged LB1QF to make more videos of his amazing setup, and I will put them out on RUclips as soon as they are ready.
Thank You! The weigh is 9 kg with antennas - I am working on a new version with alu frame instead of stanless steel, this will save me 2 kg - total weigh on the new one 7 kg :)
Hey guys I need some advice and some radio know how. I'm new to this field, very new lol ! A friend and I are putting CBs in our jeeps and for fun we wanted to use a military handset like the H250U in place of the normal CB hand mike. Is this even possible ? Any help is welcome. Thanks !
How did you connect the h 250? does it have speaker and mic working via one cable? You say: None, just fit the mic Connector and have fun :) - what of the speaker?

@SteelWolf13 @SteelWolf13 Thanks for watching - the frame is homemade, from stainless steel and paintet military green. You can see some pictures from the making here:
They were going surplus like mad a year ago. Now, with the January 2013 narrow banding just a few months away? try the local amateurs? 99.9% of all who are required to narrow band have already done so. The old radios that can not meet the technical requirements can not legally be used, and why nice radios are now on the surplus market.
The battery in the videos on RUclips is 12V/7,2Ah NiCd, now it is replased with a 13,2V/6,9 A123 type from Buddipole. Save a lot of weight with the new one :)
@Desertrunv Unfortunately there is no subscription or schematic for this setup, it is only LB1QF's imagination and hands to blame for this fantastic backpack :)
I've had this vid in my favorites since it was first uploaded. After 12 years, it was 'recommended' again today :)
Great backpack rig! I'd LOVE to see more detail on how you built it!

Very Nice, could you list out all the components an or provide a schematic, just begining but love your set up.

That is a beautiful setup. You need to start selling those haha. I'll take on in all black please.
Cool where did you get it...or did you make it??
Did you have to build a breakout with a preamp for the H-250/U military handset?
@drjet666 Did you make or buy the frame? If you aid for it, where from? Thanks.
Where do you think I could find one of these packsets??
Hi drjet666,
I'm a little puzzled as to how the HF antenna system works. No ground radials required? Which ham bands can you transmit on?
Thanks!
