What they have done here and with all the remixes is use them as replacements for the original versions. You have no choice with new vinyl or CD. The 2014 AAA Red and Blue are deleted so anyone needs to get them ASAP. Note they don't even mention they are remixes on the sleeve. Only the hype sticker and 2023 date identifies these from previous versions.

It’s not AI. It is a Machine-Assisted Learning (MAL) audio restoration system developed by Peter Jackson that was being used. It removes the piano and extracts John’s voice from the demo cassette tape. AI is creating voices/sounds from scratch. That is the very important distinction on this “Now & Then” single track.

The AI on this track is very minimal. It is only the seperation of John's vocal from the piano track. This is not an AI track in the true sense. I don't understand why people are making so much fuss about it

I suspect this was part of the marketing - tying it to AI gets people talking and draws more attention. The particular technology used here is interesting and impressive, but there are many applications in all disciplines (photography, film editing, etc.) that use AI behind the scenes in a similar way.

Michael, the Artificial Intelligence technology used for Now and Then is part of a software that separates the different musical instruments on a recorded song. It does not create new music. Software for isolating instruments has been available for many years but Peter Jackson and his team created a new one that brings better results than any other available until last year.

It's notable that Peter Jackson is hot on this idea specifically. I think he realizes the best impact of MAL is on things that are broken, not things that are good. As such, The Beatles live catalog is a GREAT opportunity.

Michael, I really liked the way you handled this. You avoided all the comparisons that would have had predictable outcomes. MAL is just a toy at this moment, and Apple is sharing toys at Christmas time. It's nothing more than that.
In other words, you gave a reasonable assessment w/out making a soapbox speech about MAL or Giles Martin. Well done.

Great video Michael, I initially didn't consider extracting and separating John's voice from other sounds like the piano to be AI. Jackson's team developed machine learing technology named MAL which cleaned up old vocals rather than generate new ones. Maybe my definition of AI needs to be expanded. Enjoyed watching.

The issue for me is George Martin remixed Help! and Rubber Soul for cd in 1986. The Beatles often complained about the original stereo mixes which became the standardized versions in the 1970s and on. Therefore, the new mixes are vital. They aren’t always perfect, but they usually restore the hard panning, bad edits, missing/hard to hear sound effects.

I don’t agree that they’re doing remixes for the sake of it. Maybe that could be argued for the later Beatles releases but the earlier stuff truly benefits from the demixing technology. The songs sound better than ever and can now hold their own against recordings from the 70s and onward.

  • @continentalgin

Interesting topic! Now And Then is strangely growing on me with additional and repeated listenings. Now I'm wondering if that was the case back in the sixties when we heard a new and different Beatles song. I was alive at the time, but I don't remember not liking something and having to warm up to it. Just can't remember that. Anyway, yeah, I remember being awestruck when I saw Natalie Cole sing Unforgettable as a duet with her deceased father. Technology enables much more than that, today. On the Red & Blue, my theory is that the remixes don't sound fresh enough because Giles is under the impression that it would be in bad taste to do new mixing that really stands out. I think he unfortunately wants to preserve the original mixes as much as possible, but just tweak them slightly. This philosophy has produced lackluster remixes.

Your thoughts are intriguing. I would echo what some others are saying. This is machine learning removing extraneous sounds from a real recording, followed by a human producer doing a lot of creative work. Giles didn't enter prompts to produce the final result and let an algorithm do the work. Would true AI recordings be popular? Commercially, there have been albums like The Beatles' songs in the style of Bach. I'm sure a few fans said, "Let's Bach out!"

A complex and intriguing discussion on AI for certain. I think what you are saying is that AI possibilities are unlimited and beyond we could even dream in the present moment. The future will have confrontation as dark vs. light or solid vs. gas or even liquid. This "beginning" will not end as it started for certain. All music, including the Beatles have new possibilities for mankind to explore and to stream perhaps on new devices not even invented or thought of. But for now, the songs are better and are wonderful to listen to. Thanks for discussion.

  • @jamesmilton-willmott7593
    @jamesmilton-willmott7593 7 месяцев назад +1

I downloaded the hi-res 24-92 files of these just because I wanted to hear the 2023 demix/remix of the early tracks in proper stereo purely out of interest as I’m a beatles nut.
It’s nice to hear the separation of the instruments and vocals done this way as there are so many things in the mix I’ve never heard before but mono is still king for these songs imo.
If the levels were correct and they weren’t mixed in such a modern way I could maybe consider changing my mind. The bass is far too heavy on these remixes and so boomy when listening on half decent gear. It’s as if they’re doing it on purpose as the majority of people listen through crappy Bluetooth speakers (mostly in mono), mediocre headphones or car stereos and this helps deliver better sound for such listening circumstances.
I thought the same on some of the tracks from the 2022 revolver release (which I have on vinyl)

I've absolutely no idea of the approach of Apple to releases. There's little consistency in approach and quality varies. They got it right with the White Album boxset but failed spectacularly with the Let It Be boxset. I was also a tad disappointed with the Revolver boxset. We know there are many unreleased tracks available for years in bootleg. I remain baffled as to why the Mono boxset hasn't been reissued but that's my bad as I didn't get it at the time. The Steely Dan reissues have set the bar in quality and sound and presentation. Unfortunately it remains Apple continue to give us crumbs. I also remain ambivalent about the remixes mainly because the quality varies too much. These are all subjective views of course, but I'm in my mid 50s ffs and I doubt I truly get what ai want.

Will solo Beatles songs be joined by the other Beatles via AI. . Ask AI ..... what would it sound like if Band on the run, imagine, Cloud 9, and Ringo albums included all four Beatles. What I think would be impossible for AI would be to ask what mind games or wildlife would sound like if John or Paul had equal input into the albums as I'm sure most of the songs wouldn't have been released or would be totally different.... the genius human element of having all 4 on the albums

  • @ralfh.5068

As fascinating as the possibilities of AI are, it will never cause the excitement of
a release like the Now and Then Song which was put together in a natural way with a little AI involvement. It is considered an authentic Beatles song cause all 4 members were involved, even if not simultaneously. The first Beatles song after decades, that's what causes excitement. An AI-created song may cause interest but not that kind of enthusiasm.

I think AI as a tool is great, but I don’t personally get excited about AI created music. I think what they did here was a great use of AI, but when it comes to AI generated music, it’s pretty terrible.. and I’m not sure if the music it pumps out will have a positive effect on creativity in the studio. Again, the Beatles song is a great use, I just don’t consider it to be created by AI in the sense that AI thought up the lyrics, the melody, or played any of the instruments, or even generate their sounds. After all that you have the mixing choices, which I think would be a real challenge for AI if you think about it..

I’m not optimistic about MAL Machine Assisted Learning and/or AI artificial intelligence with respect to works of art. Creativity in popular music is very limited right now because producers want to make familiar and unchallenging music that appeals to the greatest number of people.
Contemporary music sounds like nursery rhymes for children.
Performers are just that - chosen by the music industry for how they look and move; definitely not for their creative output.
For example look at what ABBA is doing now.
We are living through a period of great censorship and unwillingness to make intelligent music. For example, Taylor Swift (aged 33 years) releases music that deals with the issues of 15 year old adolescents.
There is something infantile, misogynistic and often violent about the current music output of nearly all top 40 artists and their producers (handlers).
MAL and/or AI will make it even easier to target and pander to specific demographic audiences. It will not be for the better in my opinion.
What the music industry needs is to foster truly creative artists and stop censoring creative, genuine and unique ideas.
The Beatles were not censored in their creativity and that is one of the reasons they were so creative and prolific.
    This post is my opinion.

For me the greatest remixes I’ve ever heard were from the Sgt. Pepper, White, Abbey, and Let It Be deluxe box sets Giles took part in. Sure there were some songs that were comparable to the original, but overall it was a revelation. That being said where Giles seems to be having the most challenges is with the d mixing process. The Red/Blue shows this as it can be frustratingly inconsistent. She Loves You the mix is outstanding, but the sound quality is awful. Where is the treble? Sadly, it sounds like a pillow is over your speakers. Don’t get me wrong, most of the songs sound better in their 2023 mixes. Certain songs like Michelle, Girl, If I Needed Someone, From Me To You absolutely shine here. Compare the mixes in general on ear buds to the original mixes which are mainly unlistenable on this format. But, I feel other songs like Ticket To Ride and Help are improved but needed to go further. Yes the songs are more defined and balanced nicely, but they sound less open than their 2015 remix on the 1 album. A song like All My Loving I may actually prefer the 2009 remaster. Unfortunately Giles decided to d mix Walrus and Old Brown Shoe instead of remixing off the multi track master tapes aka Sgt. Pepper style. Why they made this choice baffles me as later songs are more complicated to d mix and aren’t necessary like the pre 1966 tracks. Overall I’m a huge fan of new mixes because the Beatles recorded and mixed mainly for mono. Giles often fixes the hard panning, bad edits, and missing/hard to hear sound effects. George Martin remixed Help! and Rubber Soul in 1986 for cd. The Beatles often complained about the original stereo recordings which unfortunately became the standardized versions in the 1970s and on. This is why these projects are essential for the entire catalogue. My only hope is Giles goes further. Don’t change a song like Walrus whether the vocals or ending. Better quality control like the fader guitar on the 30 sec mark on Old Brown Shoe. Also, I Saw Her Standing There needed a louder guitar solo due to Ringo’s drums being loud and in your face. Nevertheless the song still is a major improvement. Thankfully we still get some of the 2015 1 remixes, 2017,2018,2019,2021, and 2022 mixes instead of Giles trying to d mix it all. The new mastering on this record is great for all those older mixes and my streaming platform now has the 2015 remixes in Ultra HD on Amazon. All in all A- but could have been better. Along with missing tracks like Rain, Helter Skelter, I’ll Follow The Sun, If I Fell, Birthday, Getting Better, When I’m Sixty Four, and She’s Leaving Home. Maybe also Baby’s In Black and Do You Want To Know A Secret. I would have omitted two of the cover songs and You Can’t Do That. I also would have removed I Me Mine and Now And Then. All excellent songs, but don’t belong on here. We can’t have it all folks 🤷🏻‍♂️

    Hi Michael,
Brilliant, profound, not easy to grasp sarcasm right from the introduction.
I see the whole thing the same way.
    Here is my opinion:
Wow, now the leftover-ramp of the already uninspired 1994/95 "Anthology" project, on the one hand because of Lennon's voice, which was virtually switched in from the afterlife and correspondingly lifeless, and on the other hand due to the unnecessary, uninspired songs "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love".
But "Now And Then", a conceivably difficult birth, not to say stillbirth, in which all of the fabulous four actually participated, albeit scattered far and wide in space and time, may it now please, please be the last shot.
The banal lyrics, written in the autumn or rather second spring of Lennon's horrible Yoko-Ono infatuation, the whiny vocals and the uninspired piano, which sounds like a tired copy of "Imagine", give little cause for joy.
    Was this really necessary, Beatles?

Yesterday and Blackbird is only Paul McCartney. Julia is only John Lennon. The Ballad of John And Yoko is only Lennon/McCartney. Now And Then has all four em. People need to calm down.

AI crap is wortheless clutter. The more it can be done the more insignificant.

I am not a fan of the fake AI generated songs like the NAS / B.I.G. you mentioned. In fact I find them kind of gross.

I like you Michael but you are a little bit of an NPC when it comes to the Beatles and AI

So disappointed in you Michael 45. AI on Beatles tracks? Goes against your whole stance on the truest form laid out on wax. What you’re describing is some sort of video game style fantasy fun. What if… But, messing with these amazing artist of the past? These sacred recordings… Peter Jackson, Giles Martin desecrating the Beatles?!! LOL. I know I’m exaggerating, but yeah I’m not.

You completely miss the point. AI is an evil thing. No one wants to listen to Beatles songs sang by Beach Boys or a mixture of Joy Division and let's say Whitesnake. This is ridiculous and should be banned. You said nothing about the way AI was used for creating Now and Then.

Hyper sensitive? Maybe. Releasing more of these robotic slabs of vinyl of true milestone artist & recordings isn’t something I take lightly. Then why subscribe to UHQR/ERC, etc., and be appalled by Mofi?

What you are describing is NOT GREAT. I guess you will soon not need all your analogue gear and vinyls.... who will print all those Ai versions???... because you are sooo exciteed about Ai creativity. And your channel also would not have to existe any more.... We will just ask Ai: " Hay what is a difference between old Beatles print and Ai version of BB King with Beatles and please let me heare both versions."
School systems all over Europe showed very poor and negative results on intelectual development of implementing too much digitalisation in a learning proceses.... So there will be againn more textbooks and classical teaching methods...
