I have taken those ignition control boxes apart. I replaced a 5 cent resistor and got it to work again. Saved $400.
That’s pretty cool.
@@theetravisbWhen I worked at a industrial facility in Massachusetts was a fella who was a wiz at electrical systems. He could literally resolder a servo amplifier board and make it work like a brand new one. He even had all the capacitors and other tidbits needed to fix any type of computer motherboard you could think of. He was extremely smart 😊
@@carlbernard4197guy like that can be a very popular guy!
It hurts that I don’t have this good of a relationship with my dad and we don’t do anything together because he has issues. But this is amazing watching you too work together ❤
I’m sorry to hear that man , glad that you can enjoy our vids.
I have a 1984 4x4. Had it since 86.
It is very tough. Has over 350K.
miles.
Never broke anything, as long as I ran tires no bigger than 33".
Very fun truck.
Enjoyed your video.
Are you sure you`re not me?? I had an `84 4X4 I bought in `86. Two water pumps, two exhaust systems, one battery, couple of sets of tires, original clutch, two sets of front brake pads, one set of rear shoes, oil and filter every 3K miles. Ran it to 285K miles and sold it in `97 and it ran as good as the day I bought it at 30K miles.
It had a rusty frame between the cab and bed on the passenger side, looked like it needed a 1-foot section of frame repaired but after I pulled the bed and started cutting it turned out to be more like 5 feet of frame that got replaced. Fifty bucks worth of new steel and a big fistful of welding rods and a week later we were back to work. I loved that truck. It was my buddy. You know what I mean.
Love the little Toyota! It brings back memories ... Some 25 yrs. ago a friend had one of these little 4x4 trucks. He had a 10 ft flat bottom john boat that fit in the bed backwards and he'd haul it to work on Wednesdays, He got off at 3 pm, his wife had meetings every Wednesday and got home about 6:30 or so. he had a window of opportunity to go put the boat in the lake, float out and do a couple hours of fishing and still get home to cook supper for him and the wife before she got there. This worked out fine for a few yrs. He ran up on a deal for a nice used fancy bass boat, but the little Toyota just couldn't pull it so he traded trucks and got a full-size chevy short-bed that handled the bass boat rig well. No where at work to park the rig so he had to go home to get the boat, go around the lake to the boat ramp to unload it, reload it.
He was pissed at his decisions .... says he spent 7 grand on a bigger boat and truck and screwed himself out of the time to do Wednesday afternoon fishing.
Sometimes a guy just don't see how good a deal he has until it's gone!
Sometimes less is more
Thanks for all the great videos, really enjoy watching you and your dad!
Thank you
To the consternation of my daughter I take my 5 year old grandson and 8 year old granddaughter in the garage and let them do projects with papa ❤️❤️
Good for you! Memories are being made, and a general knowledge of automechanics that they'll keep forever. 😊
@@1onelyone The memories are priceless. I imagine by the time those kids grow up auto mechanics will be unrecognisable compared to today.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all too...
Yeah 22RE is the more modern version that’s computer controlled, a whole bunch of sensors and fuel injected. Like you guys mentioned, other than time chain and plastic tensioners, platform is usually indestructible. You guys make me miss the Arizona desert and the fun you can have off road there
Ooh!!! As soon as I saw that truck I got 'Back To The Future' vibes!! No idea about the cost, but if you put doors in it, a couple of fenders, tail gate, tubular bumpers, a single tube roll bar and daylighter lights, that truck will look rad af!!
I know a lot of ranchers in Ok that would just put a swing pipe guard on the door openings and have a super side by side that wouldnt get its butt kicked by the mean old cows when checking on them every morning at 1 fourth the cost of a side by side.
I had forgotten how helpless a 2 wheel drive pickup is in the mud. LOL
One of the greatest trucks ever made! The 22R engine is a masterpiece. With the 4x4 option you got a keeper.
Had an 86 2wd same 22R engine . Body rusted here in Illinois. Sold it to friend for parts at 340K miles. If it was in Arizona and no accidents it would still be running.
Timing chain done due to plastic guides breaking at 230K . 22R is a bullet proof engine and drivetrain if maintained and not overheated. I have an 02 Tacoma 2wd now at 252K still runs like new.
I bought a 19 Tacoma 4wd for my retirement runs great still like the 02 better. Best world trucks ever made.
Great video - I have a 2000 Tacoma I'll never wear out, - Toyota trucks truly are indestructable when you give them even minimal care. Nice also that you can give your dad crap about cross-threading a bolt on the carb and he has the good grace not to retort!! Loved the reminder at the end too,. Be good to each other, spend some time with family and find a project you all can work on. Merry Christmas!
That dual gauge setup in front of the shifters, indicates that as an SR-5 package.
That carb. is a progressive Weber, 32/36.
Yes, that pulley on the upper left side is the power steering pump.
Good starting point.
Good luck!
Starting with a good little half ton import, the Toyota!
I remember when those trucks were new. I had a two wheel drive I bought out of a wrecking yard in 1990.. Best running little trucks. I think that was one of the first time talk actually spoke to the viewers. Nice work!
Thank you both!
Hi Travis & Dad. Thank you for all the videos. Wishing y’all Merry Christmas & all the best in 2024 from Jerome & family in Florida.
I wish my dad was still here to work on stuff / hang out. U guys are awesome 😢😢😢love every second with him….merry Xmas guys!
I hope one day my kids and I are like you and your dad you guys have something special. I love watching the content
Rick broke the fourth wall! Merry Christmas to you too pops!
Love watching your videos. I learn so much from them. You and your dad have so much patience working through these problems!
I really liked the video, but I love both of your comments at the end. Family and working on cars, or whatever you like to do together.
Man those old Toyota Trucks will not die. Top gear tried to destroy one but it kept going.
Really enjoy watching you guys work. Merry Christmas!
Very cool truck. I grew up with Toyota trucks in South Africa. They are almost unbreakable. Good job
Beauty would love to see it brought back to normal
Really enjoyed this video. It’s amazing how fast they go. Keep up the great work you and your father do. Very educational
Thank you
Right on that was a quick revival, good truck. Thanks guys, Merry Christmas
Merry Christmas !
I owned an '85 with a 22RTE back in the day. I still kick myself for selling it. It was back when I didn't know much about engines. I now have owned my '94 pickup since '98 and a 1998 4runner. These trucks will not be sold. Such a great design and reliability.
Merry Christmas!!
Thanks for the great shows!
Merry Christmas
I really like this rig. These trucks have an awesome reputation for durability and longevity. I’m glad yours is a manual. My friend has had this same year model for a really long time and it has close to 400 thousand miles on it and all it has needed is a timing chain, an alternator, brake service , and “on time oil changes” . Keep it up guys . Thanks for sharing.
I babysit my sisters late 70's hilux in my barn, collecting dust but at least its covered. The vacuum brain/tree is something I'm going to delete, it is a big source of vacuum loss. Ive never worked on one but thise 20R and 22R engines are amazing
Great video guys. Merry Christmas
Thank you for the great videos, Marry Christmas and Happy new year to you both!
What a great truck!! Nice job and thanks.

Reminds me of me and my dad when we used to work on old vehicles together.hes getting on in years now and cant much anymore. Yall are doing it right ,keep up the good job and videos.Merry Christmas and God bless.
That generation of Toyota was indestructible, up here where I’m from in the north they rotted away, but they still kept right on running. Great video , it’s great to see you and your dad working together on the truck and on other vehicles have a good holiday both of you. Thanks for a great video. By the way, I’m on my second Toyota and they’re great. It’s a Tacoma truck.
Great video. Really enjoyed watching.

You two do a great job together. Merry X-mas.
Really great video again-happy Christmas to you and your families.
Welcome back - Seen you after a few weeks - Happy Holidays
I had a 1982 22R
for my first Toyota truck. Mechanically sound, but the frame and body rotted out. Fun little truck.
Your Pops is a cool guy
Merry Christmas to y’all
Worn out chain guides will give the false idea that you might have a bad head gasket
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year !!!🌲
Nice work. Miss my dad, we used to do this too. Merry Christmas to you and yours, from Central Montana.
This is late. I want to wish you, your Dad and all your Family A very merry Christmas and a Blessed New Year. Liked and shared. All my very best.

I think that’s the first time Rick talked directly to camera. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Blades!

Great troubleshooting on the ignition system.
I remember those trucks back when i was a young teen and they was awesome back then.

I really enjoy your Dad in the videos, he reminds me of my kinfolk here in Oklahoma

You’ve gone FOREIGN on us?? Lol these are sweet trucks, y’all bought the right one as far as I’m concerned
This one kinda fell in our lap that’s why lol. Not something we look for
@@theetravisb I kinda figured. Will be a rare video one day far in the future lol
There's nothing wrong with wrenching on old japanese cars @@theetravisb
Cool little truck I enjoyed the video
Merry Christmas to you both,,hope you have a great time
Merry Christmas!
It does actually do well to let a carburetor chug a bottle of berryman B12. After it's been sitting for a while.plus another bottle in the first tank of gas. I've been using it for over 20 years and it's the only product of it's kind to actually do what it says it'll do.👍
Good video well done guys
GREAT CONTENT CREATORS ,,,MERRY CHRISTMAS BACK TO YOU
AND HAPPY NEW YEAR'S
I had the same toy-car when i was child. It was pink 😁
Merry Christmas and happy new year from South Wales, UK 🏴
Merry Christmas 🤙🏻
Merry Christmas.
I drive a '94 Toyota pickup. They made some great cars. Merry Christmas to you and your family
You played heck with that guy’s driveway lol. Very cool truck. Merry Christmas to you and your family!
I had nothing but trouble with a Weber 38/38 a couple years ago, phantom lean-outs and whatnot. Finally decided to send it out to have the throttle shafts replaced, but fate had something else in mind. Damaged in shipping. Then I found a used one with a hundred miles on it and never had any issues. Tuning the jets is a pain having to take the top off every time but that’s easier than a Holley I suppose
Kinda looks like your Dad got himself a toy for Christmas. And if he decides to flip it. Somebody else will jump on it. Thanks Travis and Richard. Have a Merry Christmas 🎄🎁. Thanks for sharing!
💯👍👊
Fun fact...My older brother once purchased one similar to this, more complete and roadworthy, that had a 318 swap done to it. The guy had put a 2 inch body lift on it, and spaced the engine mounts with long bolts and washers...lol. Worked great though. Was quite the interesting truck.
Albeit a bit beat up, it really does appear to be a decent running, well designed truck! From other comments the engine sounds like it's a time tested tank! Great job getting it running with economy in mind and your combined, hard earned diagnostical skill! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours, Fellas! 🎄🎇Catch you in 2024, to happily follow along while you most certainly will achieve 200K loyal subscribers! 👍 Probably sooner than you may think!!
Thank you and merry Christmas.
Cool truck.
Not bad for a forty dollar fix and a pair of headlights. Happy New Year, guys. 🇬🇧👍
