There are a lot of us who truly enjoy working on old cars. In December 1980 I bought a 70 Thunderbird that needed some work, i replaced the gas tank, the fan clutch, did a basic tune up and carb rebuild. Then the bus drivers went on strike and me and 2 passengers used that car to commute to Boston for 3 weeks . The drivers side window was out while I waied for a motor/regulator. Then window in and a/c charged it becane a cool cruiser. That car ran for a year and a half before the engine developed rod knock. I sold it for parts in September of 82. Still miss it today. I'm 61 now but I'd still like another classic.

That was an excellent shakedown trip for that car. You discovered most if not all the problems that really create bigger problems down the road. It needs a "This Is NOT An Abandoned Car" bumper sticker. Hope your search for the International's driver's side door pays off soon. Great video and thanks for sharing.

Trav, I can't tell you how proud I am of you for using Cherry Bombs in your exhaust! I am 40 now, but when I was 16 I bought a 1994 Eddie Bauer Explorer (4 years old at the time, and 66 vehicles ago for me), I yanked the 4.0L V6, swapped in a 302W with the A0D4 auto trans, I put an Explorer Express Eaton M90 supercharger on it, long tube headers, full dual exhaust with Dynomax 60" glasspack mufflers, and slant cut chrome tips. I had it dyno tuned and it made 418 whp on a 2WD with the 8.8 and 3.73. It wasn't posi at first, but I swapped it in later. I put a Skyjacker 6" lift on it, and put 15x10 bullet hole wheels with 13x12.50 TSL Thornbirds on it. I LOVED that truck. I moved to Pennsylvania, traded it for a mint 1992 Acura Integra GS with 104k miles, cold AC, four 10" Orion Cobalt subwoofers, a 1000x4 Soundstream amp, a set of chrome 17" wheels (that were fugly), and a full cream leather interior swap for it. Six months later I saw my baby at a local ice cream shop with some 16 year old girl driving it and she was messed up on something. Two weeks later I saw it on a rollback truck completely smashed up. She rolled it 8 times and lived, but was given a DUI. That gutted me to see that. So sad. Edit: to this day I can still tell you the VIN number of that truck and the Florida license plate number that was on it when I first got it registered. This was 22 years ago and was not my first car.

Absolutely a great video! There are many RUclips guys who do this with old cars, some are just constantly trying to be funny and that gets old. You've got the right personality, you show what your doing, give hood explainanation and your appreciation for these old rides shows! Thanks for creating the content you do! As far as you making mention of,what the pioneers were thinking when discovering this land, today's "man" won't ever be able to share in what they may have felt. Today's man is surrounded in so much comforts and security that we only see a small window of the freedom man of past would have experienced in their explorations. The more comforts and security we want, the less freedom we can have. Thanks for the ride along, truly is awesome seeing the old iron getting to inhale some fresh air.

My uncle from Newport VA owned a 60's something Chrysler New Yorker w/440 Magnum. Beautiful classic car. Excited to see you reviving this one.

Man, with your exhaust kit it really shows how even with smaller engines back in the day you can really make them sound 100 cubic inches bigger without fancy high dollar exhaust kits! That sounds awesome!
Those vintage 1920's era see-through gas pumps at 36:16 are worth big money today. They're in great condition as it is, and in that condition they're probably worth at least $5k a piece. If they were restored as new they could catch over $10k each. All that automobilia inside that garage is a gold mine if it's all original and authentic.

One thing that might help the gas mileage as altitude increases is to advance the timing some. While idling the engine. loosen the distributor and rotate until RPM comes back up. I had a 68 Dodge Polara with the 383 (not the HP version) and 2BBL carb. It delivered 19MPG at 70MPH with the AC on consistently except at higher altitudes. Nice trip and commentary. I like how you were able to recover from any issue that developed. Kudos!

@@jdpinbaytownThat HAD to be alot more fun than a 2bbl. My 70 B body Roadrunner with the 383, Thermoquad, and an A833 four speed manual with a dual tunnel ram and two Holley 650 cfm double pumpers was SO much fun, but it was tough to dial in the carbs so it wasn't trying to run full throttle all the time. Best I ever got with the Thermoquad was 14 MPG, and that was with a cam, headers, full 3" dual exhaust with Flowmaster Super 44s, and a 9" rear axle with 3.73 gears and a posi, but I couldn't stay out of the throttle. The sound of that 383 with the secondaries open was just intoxicating.

Sometimes the oil light in old Mopars will flicker or come on at an idle after the engine has warmed up. Should go off once you step on the gas. I ran 20W50 in my old Duster when the 318 got about 120,000 miles on it... greatly reduced the flickering. I love idiot lights on the dash, but gauges really are better.... especially for oil pressure and temperature.
I would think 15 mpg in a big boat Chrysler running a 383 Magnum is a wild stretch. My 71 Charger has the original 383 Magnum... and today the best I get is 11 to 12 mpg... and my car is likely a few hundred pounds lighter than your Newport.
Yeah that heater core is going to be a dog to change out... especially considering that your car has factory AC. I cannot say I've ever seen once leak as much as the one in your car! WOW! That was crazy. And that V-twin AC compressor... that was used on all Mopars back in the day. If you saw one with the square York compressor, it was an aftermarket AC system.
Hard to believe that car sat for so long due to someone installing wires 180 degrees off! I hope that person didn't continue to pursue auto mechanics as a career or hobby! But then, I suppose if they hadn't screwed up so badly, we wouldn't have been able to see such an awesome video today!
    Good luck.

This was such a great video. It is cool to see videos of people taking forgotten old cars on long drives like this. My parents had a 1962 Chrysler Newport 2 door hardtop. They had it til it was totaled in November 1972. When i heard that gear reduction starter, it brought back a flood of great memories. After watching you start the car when it kept dying reminded me of our car. I think my parents' car had the same problem with the choke sticking. My dad would open the hood and put a screw driver like you did, and the car would start. So it was one of those, so that's what was wrong with our car. You stopped at a lot of places that I've been to. Flagstaff is a beautiful place. Williams is a cool place that we always stop at when we are driving on Interstate 40. I love the Brass Armadillo in Goodyear. They also have one in Phoenix, which is a little smaller than this one. There are several of these in Iowa, Nebraska, Missouri. I've been to all of them except the one in Wheat Ridge, Colorado. Keep the grrat videos coming, and i will keep watching.

That was fun, way to stay on top of things. I'm up here in Montana, we don't have the cactus, was cool seeing that on the side of the road. I need to take my old stuff on trips like that again. Williams looks like a cool visit too.
