Our tour driver was so genuine, so welcoming and very knowledgeable about current culture and how it relates to the Hawaiian traditional culture and stories. Besides the ride down and the sunrise. There was so much to learn and truly get the meaning behind the lore and stories that you hear about. I truly believe we had the best driver and his personal insights and how it relates to his personal journey back to himself from a a bumpy "island bum" life. Thoroughly enjoyable. The ride down on mountain bikes? Terrifying, but when you end up at the zipline area, (I highly recommend it), you can breathe again. Do all 3. The sunrise, the bike AND zipline. You will not regret it.
i had no idea what was involved with this drive before embarking on it, and it was a good thing i didn't otherwise i would never have done it. scariest experience ever. it's a couple of hrs each way around a narrow twisting mountain road with no guardrails, no or little lights that i recall and fog everywhere. went up in middle of night in order to get to the top before sunrise. could not enjoy the sunrise, all i thought about was the drive back that was waiting for me, and that i was prbly going to get my wife & myself killed on our honeymoon. the drive down was somehow more horrific than driving up. it alternated btwn the sun being parked in front of my eyes to total fog, while also sharing the road with large tour vehicles. the sunrise is a sight to behold, but the tension of the drive made it traumatizing, for me at least.
Great video. Thanks for the amazing views. Going to Hawaii for 3-4 weeks is my ultimate dream vacation. Assuming I would have all the money necessary to pay for everything to stay for a month I wan't to island hop across each island spending a predetermined amount of days on each island. I decided while on Maui I would take the trip up Haleakala Summit & figured that would take at least half my day to do this. I would stay on Maui for 5-7 days so I could have time to see the whole entire island and not have to rush.
We are going to Hawaii for out first time in august, we will be renting a car, as we definitely want to see this, are there any concerns for driving this road? We really want to see it but the tours are so expensive and we want to reserve money for doing other things
It's a steep, twisty mountain road. We did it in a rental car in the middle of the day with nice weather (it was in the mid-80s in Paia, and in the 50s at 10,000 feet). The weather is a big factor since it can get foggy, windy and rainy. Drive safely and have a great trip.
Please, be very cautious if you drive there. This was the most scary drive of my life. It was foggy (or I drove through clouds) and I couldn't see more than ten feet in front of me. I drove up in these conditions in this twisty road for much of the way and I couldn't turn around. I prayed all the way up and all the way down. It was truly a miracle that I survived. Once at the top, I was greatly disappointed; the place was not worth risking my life for.
Hi there: It depends on which part of the island you're coming from, the time of day, the weather, etc. We stopped at the visitor's center to help get adjusted to the altitude. Bring a jacket because it's cold at the top. Thanks for watching.
I’m Australian, I go to Oahu, and Maui frequently, the drive up to Haleakala is one of the most spectacular in the world, simply stunning!!
Thank you for confirming that I will NOT be attempting this drive! My heart is pounding just watching you do it. #tourguide4me😌

What tour company did you use?
we will be there soon and this will be my very first time visiting Maui. So excited!
So did you eventually go? If so how was your experience?

I've been to this island at least once and it's beautiful.
I would love to do this but am petrified of those roads where there's mountain on one side and a cliff with no guardrails on the other
It's actually a very easy drive.
It’s really not a bad drive but you can always just take the tour bus up there.

@@CarNichiWa what's the typical weather up there in mid-January? Can visitor come up at Sunset and do some start gazing? Thanks for sharing
It’s not dormant it’s going to erupt again.
The really dark spot is from the last eruption in 1801 it’s going to have another huge eruption within 100-200 years.
I'm going back😉
