  • If a switch fails (which rarely happens), you can replace it easily, of course after you call Cisco and let them do the troubleshooting. When they send you the replacement you have to power it up and check the following before connecting it to the stack:
    1- It is running the same "License Level" using "show version" command
    2- Enable auto-upgrade on the stack, so when you connect the new switch it upgrades to the same IOS on the
    3- Make sure to keep the priority as "1" on the new switch, or not higher than the Active switch, or it will overwrite with its configurations which are "nothing"
    Thank you for watching!

    Simple and straightforward video that cuts right to the meat of it! Just what I was looking for! Thanks!
    Should also mention that the "auto-upgrade" only works when the switch is in "Install Mode"

    Hello Ali, to remove the old switch, do you have to issue the command no switch stack-member-number provision on master, or the master will automatically remove the old switch provision?

      Yes, to remove it, you have to use the 'no switch stack-member-number provision' on master or the information of that switch will stay as 'provisioned' in the running configs

    Hello Ali,
    What about the configuration of the new (replacement) switch?
    Should we copy all config the same from old failed stack member to new switch?
    Thank you!

      No, you don't have to copy the configurations. The new switch has to be on the correct version and license level, lower priority than the master, and it will get the configs from the master automatically.

    Hi. If a 3850 in stack mode fails. i will have to replace it for a new 3850? this switch isn't modular right?

    • @AliYounesGo4IT

      Yes, it has to be the same model, IOS version and license level.
      The only module you can add to this switch is the Network Module if you need fiber/copper ports for uplinks.

    hai ali, i see on show switch there are 5 switch but with priority 10 not become master but standby, could you explain it why?which i know stack always find lowest mac address but if we set priority highest, it's become master

    • @AliYounesGo4IT
      @AliYounesGo4IT  3 года назад

      That's right, if you set higher priority it should become the master, in this case I had to reboot the stack and then it came up as expected (the higher priority switch is Master/Active)

    On which switch you configured that command ?
    Software autoupgrade enabled ?

    • @AliYounesGo4IT
      @AliYounesGo4IT  4 года назад +2

      On the master switch of the stack, so that it upgrades the newly joined one to the same IOS version

    Do we need to set the priority on new member switch

    • @AliYounesGo4IT
      @AliYounesGo4IT  2 года назад

      The priority is 1 by default. You can double check it is 1 if you don't have any previous configurations, so that it doesn't affect other switches when it boots up.

    What if the switch that needs to be replaced is the active switch with highest priority?

    • @AliYounesGo4IT
      @AliYounesGo4IT  2 года назад

      The standby switch with second highest priority will assume the role of the Active switch.
      Setting priority value is important (example: switch 1 priority 15) to make sure a switch is elected as Active.
