  • Here I will show you how to build a custom High Capacity DVD and Game Shelf with less than 60.00 in wood. It will hold approximately 1440 DVD Cases when assembled to the specs in this video. RETRO GP UNITE!!
    You will need a space close to 8' tall and 8' wide. Adjust the materials below accordingly for smaller areas.
    2 - 1" x 6" 8' Pine Boards - About 7.00 each
    10 - 1" x 4" 8' Pine Boards - About 4.00 each
    Total 54.00
    Here is where I found the original instructions and changed them for games.

    I'm actually in the process of building a HUGE rack, that will be VERY similar. But, I will be building two to three of them in total. One thing that I did differently that sped up assembly time, is build TWO shelf spacers that are precut with the correct tilt, rather than trying to manually guess with each shelf. Using them on every shelf addition ensures all the shelves have the same tilt throughout the build. It also eliminates the need to measure between each shelf because this ensures the spacing stays the same as well.

    Nice! Looks good, simple and efficient. I should try to do something like this because my 3 Wal-Mart bookshelves are getting saggy.

    Very cool. This is something Im looking to do but a bit different. Ive built myself 1 makeshift shelf so far, it's OK but I used plywood because I had that available and it does the job but doesnt look as nice. Im going to look to replace it at somepoint but right now I need more space. My goal is to have different shelves for each console with the space to have every game. I also have a label at the top of the shelf with the Console name.

    Looks great Marcus. I can't imagine having to build one by myself. With my brother building my was a huge pain.

    that's a really great idea for storing your games, I usually buy a book shelf from a store and make it work but in future I might look into making my own as then I'll have more flexability.

      Retro Zone yep the ones from stores never quite fit right for me. It's always a bit off.

    This was super helpful and shows off your craftsman side! You do make a good point in the beginning A LOT of channels have been recently showing off how they build shelfs or show what they installed in building their game rooms! Good Stuff =^)

    Hey thanks man. We just repainted downstairs a dark brown. So the light brown shelves look ugly so I think I'm gonna build a nice big wall hugging shelf like the one you have here and paint it black. Thanks for the great video!

    Nice! A couple questions.
    1) Do you anchor this to the wall at any point? Asking because it would probably not be a bad idea if you don't haha.
    2) Do you treat the wood at all? I've used shellac on mine but would like to line it with some sort of paper or fabric. Something a bit softer/easier on the cases. The raw sanded wood tends to scuff things up over a while.

    • @RetroGamePlayers
      @RetroGamePlayers  6 лет назад

      Tarks Gauntlet Yes I use 2 anchors at the top, they need to either hit studs or use wall anchors. This wood is super smooth, no sanding or staining required. There is no rough spots or anything to mess up covers. The only I've had to look out for is the occasional sap which I'll clean with goo gone.

    • @TarksGauntlet
      @TarksGauntlet 6 лет назад

      Yeah, Shellac I used to prevent the sap from seeping out. It's kind of just a sealer. But you clearly bought much higher grade wood than I did so I may need to do extra to fix my collection shelves haha. Thanks for the response!

    Looks great bud. I always wonder why people who takes the time to build shelves like these doesnt paint them in the process?

    • @jarredsmith9187
      @jarredsmith9187 Год назад

      I wouldn't paint them but stain them with a mahogany or something so you can see all the wood grains,I think would look better.

    Nice build. I'm curious to see if these bow over time due to the weight of games.

    • @RetroGamePlayers
      @RetroGamePlayers  6 лет назад

      DatGameCollector I built a book shelf the same way last year but added 2 supports in the middle instead of one and used larger sized 1" boards but it holds lots of weight without any bowing at all. When choosing boards, select ones as straight as possible. One of the ones I used for my game shelf to the right of the new one had a bent board so it looks like it bowed but it's been like that since day one. But yeah, no bowing with that support beam in the middle.

    This is a little extreme, for most... You should have used Nicer wood, but good work.
    Oak shelves would have been great.

      I am considering making something similar myself, with oak maybe, for my Blue Ray collection. They want too much for the professionally made stuff.
