taylor wrote cardigan, august and betty as a part of a trilogy, the teenage love triangle. the story goes: betty and james are high school kids and they are together, james cheats on betty with augustine over the summer and then goes back to her to apologise at betty’s birthday party. Betty (the song) is from his perspective as the apology. August is from augustine’s perspective who fell in love with james over the summer while he saw her as a “summer fling” but she mentions him as “summer love”. Cardigan is from Betty’s perspective a few years later after this situation, when she’s older looking back at this relationship. Taylor does an amazing job at writing and mentioning details that connect the songs so well!!
@@elvideoentertainment It is indeed! If u want to see a more in-depth type of analyis of the album fron Taylor herself, u should check out The Long Pond Studio Sessions (live performances of the folklore album) where Taylor breaks down the meaning of the songs before she performs them Some are on YT (if u want to uplaod reactions) or you can just check it out in your personal time It’s truly a magical performance
Folklore was largely about story-telling, she really took on a narrators perceptive and wrote songs based on films, books, and stories that she had heard or read. Cardigan, August, and Betty were part of a fictional teenage love triangle. _Cardigan_ being in older Betty's perspective (way into the future), _August_ being in the 'other girls' perspective, and _Betty_ being in James' perspective. You should totally do "Evermore" next, its considered Folklore's sister album, (personally I like it even better).
My Tears Ricochet is not what you think, it is about her record label (Big Machine Records), Scott Borchetta she had been with him since she was about 15 yrs. old, he was like family. Taylor wanted to buy her first 6 albums, he offered her for every new album she made she would receive 1 old album back, and she would have been tied to him for years. She turned him down, and then he turned around and sold the label to Scooter Braun, including all Taylor's albums. Taylor detested Scooter Braun, he managed a lot of singers, and he even posted something about owning Taylor Swift. The jewels Taylor gave Scott were her albums that went gold, platinum, and diamond which looks good for the label. Her stolen lullabies were her albums sold out from under her. Scooter claims to have offered to sell them to her. Her song Vigilante Sh!t is about Scooter (from her Midnights album). Yes, that is why she is re-recording them. Scooter has not only lost some of his clients, but his wife divorced him, and she got the children, he has also gotten into some legal trouble.
Cardigan isn’t actually about Taylor it’s from the perspective of a character she made up named after Ryan Reynolds, and Blake lively‘s children. Cardigan is from Betty’s perspective 20 to 30 years after Betty and James’s relationship in high school. James is the eldest daughter to Ryan and Blake. The song Betty was their way of announcing their third daughters name to the world. August is from a made-up character named Augusta or Augustine James in the story was dating Betty, but he decided to cheat on Betty with Augusta or Augustine and Augusta or Augustine had no idea that James was with Betty already so she thought that they were in love, but really both Betty and Augusta or Augustine we’re just being played by James in this fictional love triangle romance story, the song betty is from Jameses perspective basically saying hey, I was 17 I didn’t know any better and August is from Augusta or Augustine’s perspective saying you weren’t mine to lose because he was already with someone else
7 is really a song about a child that is too young (seven), watching her also young best friend suffer abuse from her father and not knowing how to process that, so she comes up with a reason "I think your house is haunted" because she doesn't know how else to process it. But now, as an adult, she looks back and understands what was really happening, and though she can no longer talk to that person, because she doesn't even recall her name, she can only try to send the message that she still loves her, that someone does, and that love will be carried on forever through the hearts and minds of everyone who listens to the song. It's about losing the childish perspective "I used to scream ferociously any time I wanted" and the things that are lost in that, the innocence and wildness, and the mind that couldn't see evil, so saw ghosts instead, but still wanted to rescue her friend even then, because though "she knew nothing" she "knew everything" aka the important things, that her friend needs to escape to somewhere where she'll be safe and happy and not hide from her father and cry.
I really liked your perspective on this! As a swifty the connections i make are very specific and often Swifties "correct" and force song meanings into the context of swify lore, but "outsiders" make cool connections we often miss! Super cool seeing your thoughts on the motifs
Exactly! Thank you👏🏽🙌🏽 it’s just interpretations. I don’t know Taylor, idk her life, so I interpret it by the stories, how I relate to it. The author of a book can tell you what it’s about but you can still read it differently. I hope that makes sense but thank you👏🏽
my tears ricochet is about her masters and Scott brocheta who was her previous manager who sold her masters, she felt betrayed because she has said before that he was like a father figure to her, especially the lines "you wear the same jewels that i gave you as you bury me" and "when you can't sleep at night you hear my stolen lullabies" directly reference her masters
I just wanted to say, most people didn't pick up about the lowercase letters, she also did that with evermore, since these 2 albums were so different she probably wanted them to stand out. Also, good job, the 7th track is Seven. The first track was The One, and the 8th track is August the 8th month.

I've listened to folklore so many times and thought I knew about most of the backstories and song meanings, but you just blew my mind with some of the connections you made between tracks that I thought were completely unrelated. Amazing! Loved this analysis!
Thanks for your reaction brother! As a new Swiftie myself, I think Evermore and Folklore are tied for my favorite Taylor albums, but something about the lyrics in the songs on Evermore cut deeper for me. She's just unmatched in her songwriting abilities imo

Loved the reaction and I really hope you do evermore at some point, they are sister albums. My favourite one is right where you left me (it’s one of the bonus tracks) and can’t wait for the reaction. The last great American dynasty is about the previous owners of Taylor’s Rhode Island, mansion, named Rebecca, and William Harkness. Google their names it’s really fascinating story.
Thank you for reacting to two of her best albums ever first. For an album that I can’t relate to except for august, this is the best storytelling album that she’s ever made and written, recorded (in everyone’s home during the pandemic) and released in a short amount of time (4 months)!
the fact u were able to guess the songs were about different characters without knowing the teenage love triangle storyline is so fucking impressive honestly 🤣🤣 loved the vid so glad you’ve joined the cult
The cult lmfaooo love it. Thank you for embracing me in😂 And yeah I didn’t know about the triangle love story until reading these comments but to me the characters stuff is in the songs and they connect too
You have to watch the Long Pond Studio Sessions if you haven’t already. She talks about each song & performs them acoustically and it is absolutely amazing.
Mirrorball is partly about how we as a society love to put celebrities on a pedestal and then tear them down, their pain and struggles are society’s entertainment (“drunk as they watch my shattered edges glisten”) and partly about how Taylor struggled with the pandemic, she had been about to go on tour (“they called off the circus, from the disco down… I’m still on that trapeze, I’m still trying everything to keep you laughing with me”) I learned this via the Long Pond Studios
She used fictional characters and scenarios in these songs to tell her own stories. This way she's able to keep her secrets and her privacy while actually writing from her own life experience. I've only watched the first three songs so far but, I wanted to say you've understood the lyrics very well. Btw, the Last Great American Dynasty is based on the life of a real person - Rebecca Harkness, whose house on Rhode Island Taylor bought in 2013 for 17 million dollars. One of the first things Taylor did was shore up the retaining wall which keeps the house falling onto the beach and into the sea. Apparently, the neighbours (the Rhode Island set) complained about it for some reason, saying that she "ruined it" when all she was doing was fixing it. In this way, Taylor compares herself to Rebecca who was criticized by the same snobby types.
Omg I'm in shock, you got it right mostly every song, except seven mad woman and epiphany. Seven it's actually about a childhood best friend with an abusive family. Mad woman its also about scooter braun thing, and epiphany traces a parallel between the experience of the soldiers in the war and the health professionals during covid (this album was made and released during covid)
This particular song is about Scooter Braun who is the one who bought all of rights to her music. Her tears from his betrayal came back to haunt him because she has rewritten Almost all of the albums as (Taylor’s Version) and Swifties only listen to her version (as much as possible as they are released) therefore, rendering his “stolen lullabies” as nonprofitable. He deserves none of her royalties. Her tears have now become his tears.
its not about Scooter Braun its about Scott Brochetta the guy who signed her and owned big machine records at 14 years old and then sold it to scooter. She had a friendship and good work realationship with Scott and he betrayed her by selling it to scooter himself because Taylor was vocal about Scooters motives.
Excellent video!! Thank you for the content ❤ Loved the way you analyze every lyric and create your own meaning and connections, so cool! If i can give you some advice, in some points of the video, the songs were so loud that i couldn't understand what you said, so maybe you can work on that for the next ones sz
The "hero flying around saving face" line gets me every time. The last thing a hero should be saving is face. That's not a hero at all. That's just pretending. Sooooooo good.
seven is actually taylor talking about a childhood friend. Like how she can’t really recall their face but she still has love for them as a friend because of the good times that she can remember with them, and also how that friend had a rough childhood when it mentions how their dad is always mad and how at 7 yrs old you don’t really understand what your friend is going through but you’re like it’s okay you can live me and we’ll play games and you won’t be sad. so just showing situations that you viewed different or didn’t understand at a young age but also how more free and creative you can be before you learn to be civilized
It's totally up to interpretation but the official one said by Taylor herself is the teenage love triangle involving Betty (who 'sang' Cardigan), James (who 'sang' Betty), and Augustine (who 'sang' August). As for epiphany, remember that this album was written in quarantine when COVID-19 was at its peak. Taylor wrote the first part with military setting inspired by her late grandfather who was a war veteran, and the second part with medical setting inspired by the medical workers "holding hands through plastic now/ something med school did not cover". This song was used in a lot of ads in honor of medical workers during COVID-19.
Track "seven" is about childhood friendship. Her friend is a little girl with "braids like pattern". That little girl's dad was always angry so she had to "hide in the closet". :( That's why "I think that your house is haunted". The saddest and darkest part of the song. However, it's about healing the pain at the end.

I mean the records can still be sealed that doesn’t mean you haven’t listened to the songs before lol not like they’re not online haha. Though I tend to lean toward wanting to believe reactors
My tears ricochet isn’t actually romantic at all. It’s about her masters and how they were stolen from her. The man she’s singing about is Scooter Braun, The “jewels” in “you wear the same jewels that I gave you as you burry me” are he songs, same as “my stolen lullabies” which you actually caught on to. So yeah it’s about the reason for the Taylors versions
Seven is literally about her being seven. lol. That’s why there’s children’s perspective on things like saying “I think your house is haunted and it’s probably because your dad is always mad”. It’s not logical because it’s a 7 year olds point of view
While yes I do like to see these tracks with characters as Taylor intended but you can definitely apply them to different stories and perspectives as well which I love about her writing 🩵
taylor wrote cardigan, august and betty as a part of a trilogy, the teenage love triangle. the story goes: betty and james are high school kids and they are together, james cheats on betty with augustine over the summer and then goes back to her to apologise at betty’s birthday party. Where did u get Sirens by Lana del rey?
Critics: If you are really a great songwriter, write a song about the house you just bought. Taylor: Bet! Writes LGAD.
❤❤❤
You see how cohesive this album is ? Its gotta make you a swiftie bro
It really is and I have a feeling Evermore might solidify it😅
React to Kali Uchis new song Te Mata and video
Mad woman is actually about Kanye and Kim. Research what happened with all that if you don’t know and listen again and it will make sense.
“Stollen lullabies” = Stollen versions of her songs
💗🫶🏼✨
te adoro! your videos are great! and you are so sweet! amor from brasil!
I mean the records can still be sealed that doesn’t mean you haven’t listened to the songs before lol not like they’re not online haha. Though I tend to lean toward wanting to believe reactors
We all knew you would love it since it’s succhhhh a Lana del Rey album.
Lol that’s what I heard and I hear it, plus she works with Jack Antonoff so it makes sense
Actually if you pair August with Seven you will get August 7; the release date of The lakes-- the bonus track of this album
What's the point of buying albums if you dont listen to them? 😭
I’ll get to them eventually 🤷🏽♂️ Lol
