Everyone always misses the first verse and how devastating it is. She’s talking about suicidal ideation. She says “I didn’t know if you’d care if I came back” This is the fear she’s talking about later. No one cares if I come back no one cares if I’m here or not ect. Then she says “Pulled the car off the road to the lookout” A lookout is like a big cliff that’s high up enough to see the whole town or landmark. Then “Could've followed my fears all the way down” Aka she could’ve listened to those fears in her head that no one cares and drove or leap from the cliff “all the way down” Just heart wrenching.
@@ToneyReactions Yes it really does! Taylor stays packing a whole lotttt into all her songs. Sometimes I swear like 20 listens to a song later I’m like oh shit I never even noticed that before.
I agree. I think a lot of people miss it. She hints at suicidal thoughts occasionally in her songs, even on TTPD (Guilty as Sin), and I honestly worry for her. She's under so much pressure all the time from so many fronts. I can't imagine what it's like to be her. The last 10 months or so, she seems so happy in public that I hope she really is in private, too. This song, though hits me hard. Like they said on the Long Pond sessions, everyone struggles in their own way... But this song feels like it could have been ripped from the pages of my own diary.
Yes! I love when you react to Taylor! One suggestion: You should react or just watch on your own to the film folklore long pond studios! She explains the songs on folklore and sings the album acoustic. The film is filled with the folklore aesthetic. Its a really beautifully calming film! And you should react to her older songs like invisible, White Horse!!!, You're not sorry, they are so good I promise
Arrrgh would’ve been cool to see you do the Long Pond version. She talks about her inspiration for the song and it’s such a wonderful version. It’s live and it’s very emotional
I'm waiting to see how far in it takes you to say "paint the pic...", OK @1.27! I haven't heard this version before. I have only seen the Long Pond Sessions. The stacked vocals are almost haunting and a little trippy itself!
"Pouring out my heart to a stranger But I didn't pour the whiskey" - I feel this is therapy. She's trying to navigate the end of a love story (her own) and instead of getting loaded to numb the pain, she goes to therapy for help surviving heartbreak and grownup breakups. Another nod to alcohol abuse is her lyrics in Fortnight: "I was a functioning alcoholic / 'Til nobody noticed my new aesthetic."
Yesssss. I love this song. Taylor said it's about anyone who struggles with anything: Substances, depression anxiety, whatever. And you try so hard to be your best and to well...try. But your best and hardest still isn't normal or good enough. So it's like saying hey this is me doing my hardest here, please recognize I'm giving this my best attempt. I have some sensory processing issues and I try my best to be a great wife and mom... but I get really overwhelmed especially in situations like kids parties etc. And I try so hard to do my best and keep up and be a good partner and parent but I feel like I stick out and look like I'm not good enough because I have to hang back. Everyone has a struggle.
The song for me is about depression, suicidal ideation and a self harm addiction. The real lyric that connects with me is They told me all of my cages were mental/So I got wasted like all my potential Not wasted like drugs or alcohol, but wasted with my blade until I couldn't feel anything but physical pain because I felt I deserved it and I just wanted a distraction from deep, deep mental pain. This Is Me Trying is my favorite Taylor Swift song of all time
I recommend listening/reacting to the Long Pond studio sessions of these Folklore songs. And also the discussion about the song first which gives some background info on the lyrics! Hits much harder than the lyric videos (which are still good.)
Absolutely love your reactions.. just a request.. if you listen to anything else off the folklore album watch the long pond studio version including the interview before.. it adds so much content to how she was feeling when she wrote the songs.
I love getting my own understanding first and then I'm going to go back to the long ponds to see how I did dissecting her lyrics lol if that makes sense
I love the way you break down Taylor's lyrics in your reactions! I think this is me trying uses the homonyms really well in almost all the lines in this song to show the depths of the experiences people can have that relate to this feeling ❤ and i cry every time i hear this one ngl 😭 I think you'd like cold as you (its from her 1st album) as it is another great example of taylor painting the picture with her writing ❤
After listening to the full "Folklore" album I believe this fits in with the Betty and James situation. Please listen/do reviews on the following song "The 1", which also denotes to the film/movie info that is also noted in "This is Me Trying" I believe after James had his issues and Betty didn't want him back (in song "Betty" and "August") time went by and Betty went into her own depression and realized she didn't want to do without James so that's her standing back in his doorway ("This is Me Trying") trying to resolve the past/regretting her past decision letting James go. It's a very deep feeling story/album and I believe there's more than the three songs (that most say there is) that tell the story of James and Betty. Would love to hear your other reviews and how you see the overall story. Thanks for doing the Swift reviews!
I only knew the radio version of Taylor until she started dating my tight end Travis Kelce. So I'm new to the Swifty verse and I love all these songs and reactions!!!❤️
Oh boy. If you think these are sad songs, buckle up for Ronan. I also think you might enjoy Marjorie, a tribute to her opera-singer grandmother who is credited on the song with "backing vocals" because they worked in a recording of her into the song.
When reacting to folklore songs, I beg you to do the Long Pond Sessions movie version whenever possible. Absolutely HAAATE that I missed that!! CZ that adds even not heartbreak to the song and it's meaning 😭

The conversation between her and Jack before her performance of this in LPSS was so powerful. I loved it!
The You’re Not Sorry love>>>> in my top five for a reason 🩷🩷🩷
Yes!!! Folklore long pond studio edition!
This is one of the best breakdowns I’ve seen without having seen the LP sessions though, honestly.
I listen to the show… so i wait with bated breath for the “paint the picture taylor” and i repeat it and it feels like church in the best way

this is just one great tune. we all have tried, at some time, to make up for our past mistakes.
We all know now this is about Matty. This Taylor at her empathic best.

I relate to this song so much as a recovering addict and someone with mental health issues. It's one of her most special songs for me.
