So I finally got ahold of John Petrucci for a coffee. Even though I would've enjoyed it in person since I'm not a fan of Skype interviews, it came out pretty good. Next time it will be in person! Enjoy me being absolutely nervous and star struck!
Imagine kid Ola internally screaming when JP told him he watches his video lmao. Good for you buddy, we're (well atleast i) are happy for how far you've come!
Straight up, I smiled hard for Ola when JP gave him his compliments. We live for those moments of joy, and it’s always wonderful to see another person experience that. - SB
John Petrucci is slowly turning into Saruman. On a serious note, this guy is such a fucking treasure. He's one of the most amazing guitarists ever, has one of if not the most influential prog metal bands ever, yet is so super humble & down to earth. I remember watching Become the Knight interview him and came away with the same impression. Dude is literally talking to guys who borderline idolize him and makes them feel worthy!
I've seen multiple interviews of John and he always comes across as humble, polite, kind and whole hearted, he's just an honest to goodness good person, there's never been any drama with him, the guy is just a gentle giant.
Seeing Ola kinda geeking out in the interview, I love it. This is a testament that when you put in work into your craft, you can and will achieve your goals
The smile on Ola's face when John said "whenever I want to check out a new piece of gear I don't physically have I go to see if Ola's done a review" was the single most heart warming and honest reaction I have seen in ages.
(my two cents) That is probably because being in a band, John Petrucci has to share the stage with other virtuosos who take the spotlight, and Dream Theater has got more appeal (probably also having a lead vocalist helps a lot, because it forces you to write actual songs).
I agree 100% with Ola. John doesn't get enough credit for his emotion behind his best solos. The last solo from Octavarium gives me chills every single time.
@@c-chavez I love that solo, but Octavarium takes the cake for me. I think it was one of those "right song at the right time in my life" kind of situations.
I don't know but when John started saying that he watched Ola's videos, I could feel the emotion that Ola was going through. I feel so happy for Ola, he deserves the best. John is just another level of human being.
We clearly see that Ola is happy like a kid when John tells he's watching his videos. Honored and proud you must be (and you're right, you deserve it).
Hearing that John Petrucci has panic attacks having to re-learn material for a tour is so humbling. I always felt inadequate as a player and musician for freaking out at the prospect of playing something I haven't played in years.
John should always video record every solo/song he does. That way when he needs to "relearn" a song he can simply watch a video of him playing it uo close and personal and make it much easier for him to relearn.
Excellent interview. JP is one of the most humble, respectful humans - especially considering he's one of the most influential guitarists of the past 25 years
I gotta say, it's pretty cool seeing Ola interview one of his heroes as a peer in the industry. You may not realize it, Ola but you are that same level of hero to a lot of us lowly metalheads. Two insanely talented dudes with all the humility and respect. It's a feel good interview and it's just impossible to not be happy for you dude. Cheers!
I met John in real life during one of his guitar clinics in Frankfurt and talking to him, shaking his hand, was like a gift of god to me, back in the day! He is such a politely, patiently and nice guy! He took the time for every fan, to change some words, to give some autographs and to make some selfies with his fans! It was an honourable moment and he simply won us all over! John Petrucci is such a guitar god and such a wonderful human being! I do hope, that you´ll meet him in real life as well, Ola! LOVED this interview! Thank you so much, Ola!
John Petrucci was one of the guys that showed me where the line in the sand was in regards to being a very good player having nailed lot's if not all Metallica, Iron Maiden and to a point, Megadeth etc...and taking your skill to an even higher level by augmenting your musicianship knowledge with instrument abilities.
Ola, this interview put such a smile on my face, seeing you fanboy-ish with John Petrucci. Totally love that, the fact that even in our age, being parents etc a certain person puts you back to being 12 years old and I can fully associate with your nervousness. Even though John Petrucci is such a down-to-earth-kinda guy and so pleasant, I would totally freak out as well, being a DT fan since Images & Words. Even talking for ages to John Petrucci would not wipe away the nervousness. Best interview ever! 😍
This is like watching my best buddy achieving something he dreamed of forever. So cool to see. And every time he complimented you, I was smiling with you. And well deserved! Be proud of how far you have come in live! Such a cool interview as well. Keep going Ola, we love you and what you do! :)
JP. A guitar hero and god, extraordinary musician. An inspiration, all while being a humble down to earth person you would love to hang out with. Simply an idol.
Man, that whole intro between Ola and Petrucci warmed my whole heart. That was the dream of any fan come true. I met John a year ago and he made my dream come true as well. I could have cried just like Ola. Thank you John and thank you Ola. God Bless you guys.
Everytime I watch a JP interview I become more and more of a fan. Its like when yiu meet a beautiful person and think “ong they are so pretty I’m sure its gone to their head and they are a jerk or full of themselves” but then they turn out to be like just as beautiful human. John is like a natural beauty, in this case as a musical genius, but not one shred of arrogance, or such. He is so humble, laidback and just cool. Thats just a relief abs a breath of fresh air. Fantastic interview Ola and so glad you got to chat him up.
Seeing Ola gush and fanboy so hard is heartwarming. Just reaffirming that no matter how “big” you get, we all look up to someone as an idol and it’s almost humbling, and makes small fish like me feel a bit better feeling “insignificant.”
This conversation is so healthy for the metal music community overall! Having funs interact with their idols is unique and is done during mutual respect among the artists and for the people watching the video. Love seeing these conversations!
I wholeheartedly enjoyed this interview Ola. It was special to see the two of you have a conversation about music and gear that not only answered some important questions but also will help propel guitar players closer to reaching their own goals. Also, its inspiring to learn that even the greatest players can struggle with relearning their own songs years later. It makes what I’m trying to do with my own music seem a little less daunting and that means a lot.
Labelling either of these posers and jokers as a man as great as Jesus Christ himself or any kinda comparison at all is just ridiculous and disrespectful to such a great man! And I’m talking about Jesus Christ himself and not either of these jokers! Ola would be a straight pagan or Viking destroyer of peace and harmony with a back ground and genetic makeup and nationality like his and the other one! Who even cares!
If he were still around, imagine a Coffee with Dimebag Darrell. To have coffee with both of your heroes. Dime would probably prefer shots of black tooths instead of coffee.
Man i've just started the video and I already have a smile on all my face. It is Amazing top have seen you at your begining and today see an interview with the man you mentionned the most with Dimebag as your Hero. Happy and proud at the same Time 🥺
Look at the smile on Ola's face when John says he watches his videos, it's the kinda smile where your face muscles hurt and I can feel it from here :D EDIT: Also, this was probably the absolute best Coffee with Ola you've ever done. This was fantastic!
What an awesome interview. You could see the sheer joy and excitement on Ola’s face. So happy you got to interview one of your guitar hero’s. You’re so humble and you deserve everything that you have. Love your content and keep up the good work man.
I was tearing up in the first 3 min because of JP complimenting you and then you said “I’m about to cry.”😭😂 I met Petrucci at NAMM and told him a similar story about how he made me stick with guitar and inspired me all over again that made me a lifelong player. He seemed genuinely appreciative of the comment. What a legend.
Beautiful Ola is bringing up the emotional side of Petrucci’s playing (32:00), I mean the solo of lines in the sand on the falling into infinity album which is one of my favorite Petrucci solo I guess, is a phenomenal musical masterpiece. Thanks for this great interview.
Petrucci is awesome. Side note - I always wonder about if Dime were still here how a awesome a coffee with Dime would have been (or a Whiskey with Dine!) He’d definitely have loved you Ola
Ola I almost cried with you. What an incredible moment to discover one of the guitar players you look up to and inspired you the most; knows you and looks to you for knowledge and understanding.
I love how John is always completely prepared to geek out with just any other player that he meets. I love the guy's playing and music but he's a real inspiration as a person and professional as well. I also love the fact that he's busy geeking out on RUclips like the rest of us. Some successful musicians start behaving like celebrities a bit when they reach a certain level. Not necessarily in a bad way but perhaps become a bit "guarded". With John it's just like talking to another guitar player in any given music store only he's on such a high level of playing and technical knowledge with the gear and not just the chops. Completely approachable.
Can we just take a second to acknowledge how much of a nice guy John is.. he’s always praising people he works and interacts with which obviously makes him a very likeable person.
There’s a certain Obi Wan quality and feeling to this video. Beautiful thing. Love both of these guys. Solo to take the time is still one of my favourites ever. That and the whole of Erotomania. Unreal. As a 16 year old I was often in tears and broken by the majesty and the wonder of Dream Theatre. One of the best Bands ever
On One side of the the screen you can see one of the greatest guitarist ever: an amazing man, a funny dude, a guy so full of talent that when he plays his guitar it makes your day better! On the other side of the screen you can see John Petrucci.
It is SO refreshing lately to hear titans I admire so much (Petrucci, Devy, Geddy, Elfman) be so open about their anxieties on performance, their need to learn and practice their own material, the self-doubt. Really helps me get over the "it's all raw talent" illusion and keep hacking at it.
Ola is like a kid in a candy store..I can totally relate to that. When I met Marty Friedman I hugged him is almost..... an un-metal way :) He was cool enough to understand :)
Haha, my story is exactly the same as Ola's. Got into Dream Theater from Falling into infinity and went to their Falling Into Infinity show in Helsinki. Then bought the Rock Discipline VHS and practiced hours every day and then bought the Petrucci Ibanez signature model JPM P2 guitar. I wonder how many others are out there. Thanks for the great interview!
I almost cry seing this beautiful conversation between the idol and the fan. JP really shows why he is a true legend player, being so much humble but full of charisma. Wish all the success for you Ola.
John seems to be such a nice guy , its so satisfying watching him and Ola talking , this and the one with Kiko Loureilo are best episodes of Coffe with Ola
The interview with Mr. Petrucci is the most intelligent interview I have heard in a long, long time. I’m glad you got this opportunity! It must have been so much fun. Did you wet your pants???
This has to be the best day that Ola ever had and that's the most wholesome thing ever! Having John Petrucci congratulate you and validate your work must be so awesome and infinitely flattering! Congratulations Ola for meeting your hero! Continue doing what you're doing!
I have been a fan of John Petrucci and Dream Theater since 1991. Seen them live 10 times and met them twice during two separate meet and greets. Really great to see him on Ola's channel.
This is so good Ola...I'm so happy for u!! Can't stop smiling while watching this :D I remember when I've met him before a DT Concert at a Meet & Greet in Hamburg, Germany and I was so fucking nervous! He is definitly a Hero for me too and I was very happy that I had the opportunity to tell him that! He also signed my Astonishing CD and my guitar strap which is kind of cool!
I love what you said Ola about John not getting enough credit for the emotion in his solos and I agree a thousand percent. He's got some reeeeally beautiful, soulful passages in many of his solos. The Lines in the Sand solo, the Spirit Carries on, Another Day, the list goes on and on.
So glad you asked him about the memory thing!! I'd always assumed the guys all had insanely good memories or it was just muscle memory. Sort of nice to know John struggles with it just like the rest of us!
So, Petrucci is human. That's new for me. Hearing that he feels the pressure when he is about to practice and memorize all those impossible instrumental parts makes me feel a little bit better.
I think this is one of those rare opposites of the old saying “don’t meet your heroes...” Just two extremely cool dudes showing their respect and love of each other. Great to see!
So I finally got ahold of John Petrucci for a coffee. Even though I would've enjoyed it in person since I'm not a fan of Skype interviews, it came out pretty good. Next time it will be in person! Enjoy me being absolutely nervous and star struck!

JP has to be one of the nicest guys in metal. Always classy, friendly and incredibly generous. Total man crush.
God, The Cross over we Needed in this Time
John seems to be such a nice guy , its so satisfying watching him and Ola talking , this and the one with Kiko Loureilo are best episodes of Coffe with Ola
That smile on Ola's face when John started about how he checks out Olas videos. :)
After the second most requested episode make the most requested one happen ola. We want mikael akerfeldt now, the guitarist and singererr of opeth.
Or maybe Peter Tägtgren.
So glad you asked him about the memory thing!!
I'd always assumed the guys all had insanely good memories or it was just muscle memory. Sort of nice to know John struggles with it just like the rest of us!
Damn this show has some great guests now... you're getting up there Ola, good work!
So, Petrucci is human. That's new for me.
Hearing that he feels the pressure when he is about to practice and memorize all those impossible instrumental parts makes me feel a little bit better.
That was pretty huge. Genuine lovely interview. Finally some new questions for John.
I think this is one of those rare opposites of the old saying “don’t meet your heroes...”
Just two extremely cool dudes showing their respect and love of each other. Great to see!
