Nick - Preach! My parents still have sheets (and blankets and pillows) from before I was born -- I'm 42. I recently visited them and the sheets they used to make up the guest bed were for their California king bed and the guest bed is a full size. Also, my dad kept arguing with me that the guest bed is a queen size and not a full. This combination of madness broke me a bit and I insisted that we clean out the linen closet and re-organize it. My parents have been in their house since 1984, and this was the first time they ever went through the linen closet - EVER. Anyway, very proud that I was able to get them to part with some of the old linens. I then bought a brand new set of sheets, pillows, and quilt for the guest bed (it is a full size mattress). My parents now use the guest bedroom to nap in.
So, I recently bought a house of my own after the end of my 25 year marriage. My previous house was modern/minimalist, which was “cool and “slick” but lacked warmth and personality (a bit snarky, but the house was my exes idea and he really kept control of the decor). Anyway, I started to purchase things for the new place before I moved in and according to Nick’s aesthetic, I did pretty well in my new bedroom, which is pretty large). I ticked most of the boxes he mentioned (except for extra blankets on the bed). The look is kind of “girly glam” which I am really liking. After the minimal look for the past 10 years I wanted something pretty and cozy (my motto became “screw modernist, I’d rather be cozy 😏). Wish I could upload a couple of pics and get his (and other’s) opinions. ☺️
One thing I will say to keep in mind about task lighting: If you're one of those people that like to rearrange your room every once and while, wall sconces and hanging pendant lights won't work well with that....once that lights are hung/attached to the wall, without a lot of work moving/refinishing walls, they're not moving. Which means the bed stays wherever those lights are. Just something to keep in mind!!
Bed perfection for me: Queen size bed, cotton sheets, silk pillowcases on the two soft pillows and linen or cotton on the two firmer pillows, linen doona cover, cashmere throw, spare velvet reading cushion.
I love a rug in the bedroom because besides the reasons you mentioned, it absorbs sound and you can notice that as soon as you enter the room. It feels more peaceful.
To me, slight asymmetry in shared bedrooms reflects not only interest but that the space is shared by 2 equally strong individuals: they obviously have a lot in common but ultimately do things slightly differently, no? Thanks for what you do Nick, not only your ideas but also the background work you put into this, the timeline, the detail of items... while still keeping your wit and unique throw away lines that always make me smile. ♥
I have three sets of sheets/bedcovers. One silk, one eucalyptus, and one cotton. The silk are beautiful but such a pain to care for that I don’t use them often. The eucalyptus are lovely for fall, winter, and spring. The cotton is great for summer. Material composition of sheets matters.
@@Keepinitreal55 it's a sub-type of tencel/lyocell, which can be made from a variety of fibres. Eucalyptus is apparently more sustainable throughout production. It's closest to sateen cotton in feel, but stronger that sateen or percale. It wicks moisture and thermoregulates well (they're cooler than cotton), and wrinkles similarly to sateen.
@@Keepinitreal55 those are mutually exclusive most of the time. I would try to get a 300tc cotton set made of good quality cotton, and wash the crap out of it a few times to break it in. They get significantly softer than you would think.
Great advice, per usual! Furniture with storage is a must-have for me. A tip for anyone shopping for a bed frame with drawers, consider drawer placement on the bed frame. Most bed frames have drawers on the longest side of the bed that are blocked from opening if you put a nightstand next to them. If you plan to use your drawers frequently as I do, think about a floating shelf or a three-drawer system that leaves space for your nightstands.
With our tiny bedroom we cannot add anything but we did invest in great sheets/duvet cover sets that match the chocolate brown wall I painted. I was really hoping you'd mention the position of the bed. We stayed with several family members in America this Summer and every single guest room had the bed directly under the window. So every morning we lay there staring at the ceiling or a blank wall or a single painting. I never realized how unpleasant that was but when we got home it was almost euphoric to lie in bed looking our our big windows at 3 trees of different colors with birds in them.
I saw a French country room that had a round table covered in a long white linen tablecloth and two delicate chairs, and it created just the most romantic, inviting little as-if-nook for two, breaking up what would have just been long flat wall space. Very lovely.
I love my Brooklinen sheets! I converted to all linen a few years ago and haven’t looked back. I love the soft, rumpled feel of linen and it looks so casual and lived in. My first fitted sheet became threadbare and tore after two years of daily use and Brooklinen replaced it with an entire set, no charge. I’m a devoted customer.
Random but I appreciate this SO much about your videos - your voice is super soothing and easy to listen to! I never feel annoyed by the end of even your longest videos. Idk why it's so common for people to be loud and obnoxious with grating voices here on RUclips, but you're a breath of fresh air, thank you! Always appreciate your advice and levity 😁
I swear you’re videos are eerily timely for me. I had literally just gotten back from walking around our framed in house and trying to decide where we would put the beds in each room, and came home to find this! I love that you acknowledge that we don’t all have big spaces to work with and offer some scaled down ideas as well. In our main bedroom I think we have the symmetrical-but-asymmetrical thing - one nightstand is wood and the other a small round glass topped table. I have a round glass globe table lamp for the wooden nightstand and a wooden-based table lamp for the glass nightstand. Wood and glass on both sides, but in reverse. Love all your ideas for bringing in different textures!
Here in rural France we get beautiful mid C20 linen sheets for a dollar or two in charity shops. Often you can find unused wedding sets kept for best and still in their packaging. Warm or cold outside, there's nothing like sleeping in linen. Sometimes old sheets are the best!
so true about the warm lighting in the bedroom. i installed (or rather had the husband install) a dimmer in the bathroom for the main overhead light. i found that doing my nighttime routine in a very brightly lit bathroom just woke me right up. now i do my routine in a dimly lit bathroom then go into my dimly lit bedroom. i fall right asleep! great post!
@@eljaykayaye1186 well, I feel like minimalistic styles can be kinda boring and soulless, even though harmonic, so maximalism would be a nice change! I wish he's brave enough 😆
I only use 100% linen sheets/duvet on my bed. Expensive, yes? Worth it, absolutely. Plus I love a lived in, cozy look for the bed. I add texture with my throw blanket and extra blanket at the end of the bed.
“If your bedroom is looking a little drab, a little boring these days and you’re looking for ways to zhuzh things up” NEVER FELT SO CALLED OUT BUT SEEN AT THE SAME TIME. How did you know this was the exact video I needed?
Saaaaame! All these "design this room" Nick's been doing has come at the perfect time as I just moved into a place alone for the first time where I have full control over how I design my space (or as much control as a renter can have :/ )
Hey Nick, during your asymmetry bit, I was hoping to see an asymmetrical bedroom. But I saw symmetrical bedrooms with touches of asymmetry. I’d love for you to do some truly asymmetrical bedrooms, as I have one by room size necessity, and am curious how my design fares with the experts.
Fenshui and Vasthu says not to have two completely identical thing in master bedroom as it could invite infidelity! So a little imbalance or asymmetry is good for a happy family 😌
@@sams6591 Cool! I did not know this. I have a queen bed with 2 identical nightstands, i.e. very symmetrical, which I thought was following feng shui rules? And lately I have been yearning to get rid of one! Thoughts?
I was feeling self conscious for using a pendant light over the nightstand in my guest room, but I’m feeling a lot better about it now! I always love designer validation. Lol
A few years ago I changed from cotton to linen bedding. I love linen sheets. They’re warm in Winter and cool in Summer, very comfortable and the texture helps to make the room look and feel cosy. I use dark greys in Winter and pale grey & white in Summer.
We just downsized from a King to a queen bed in our new (smaller) bedroom so we could have decent nightstands. I was totally worth it on other levels. As much as we loved the roomy bed, now the whole room feels bigger, brighter and more comfy.
@@Person-mh6xq It wasn't a difficult decision for me- the really small room was just one big bed. Hubby OTOH loved the huge king bed. He took some convincing but once he saw how nice it looked with the smaller bed and the chair we now have room for, he was sold. :-)
I recently added a task light to one side of my bed. Needless to say, it was one of the elements that really pulled the layout together. It's next to a small nightstand. A table lamp is on the other side on an oversized nightstand. It balances. Above the bed is a good size textured ball lamp. I'm not quite done with the reorganization, but you are right with this asymmetrical look.
Thank you for the Brooklinen recommendation. So hard to find great sheets. Expensive doesn't always mean luxurious. I also support the floating shelf nightstand! I was gifted a bed but it only left 18 inches on each side of the bed. I agree the bed is big but it was free. By using the floating shelves it made it look bigger than it would had I shoved a box on the floor on either side. Huge difference.
Here’s a bedroom “storage hack” that works for me so I thought I’d share: you know the hall trees that usually go in a mud room or entryway? They usually have a little bench, some shelves, hooks for coats, scarves, maybe a bar to put hangers on. Get one for the bedroom. It may seem unorthodox, but I find it super practical. While Nick is absolutely right to point out under-the-bed storage, that works really well for seasonal stuff, like he said, but there’s every-day storage that can make a room messy: I need a place to put a couple decorative pillows I don’t use for sleeping (I don’t just want to throw them on the floor), or what about clothing items you pull out of the closet and wear them for a bit; they are not ready to go into the laundry bin just yet, but you don’t want to put them back in the closet with the fresh cloths. What about your nightwear or loungewear? Where does that stuff go during the day? For me, a hall tree is a great solution to keep all these things organized in one place and prevent my bedroom AND closet from becoming a mess. It even goes well in your bathroom if you have an on-suite. The hall tree is a great transitional space for keeping your transitional items (items not quite in need of storage but not in immediate use) organized and neat. And they come in such varieties of design styles that you can probably find one that looks like “it belongs” in your bedroom/on-suite. I highly recommend it.
Interesting idea. I can envision hats and a scarf on the hooks, decorative pillows on the bench overnight, a throw blanket. But in the bedroom especially, I don’t like clutter or chaos, which seems as though it would be both, hanging workout clothes and nightgown where they are seen all day. I have a row of hooks on the bathroom door, one across the inside of one closet to keep some things, and a shoe storage bag with pockets for incidentals, gloves, muffs, hats, scarves seasonally. I like your “out of box” thinking though!
So glad you posted this, thank you!! I had this exact idea yesterday, as I'm trying to make my room more ADHD friendly, but I totally second guessed myself! At the end of the day, I know I'm not going to get all the clothes where they need to go. Might as well dedicate a place for them so it at least looks intentional and everything doesn't get wrinkled.
@Sharon Fleshman It's going so well! I'm actually undiagnosed myself, but I struggle with depression and my psychiatrist thinks it might stem from adhd. No proper diagnosis yet. Organizing has been helping a ton. The key has been to throw away all notions of how it's "supposed" to be done and just look for what is the easiest for me. Baskets have helped, but they need to either be clear or labeled. No lids. I changed all trashcans to some that have wide tops that are open, and somewhere within arms reach in most spaces. My dog gets into the trash all the time so they are stashed inside cabinets or on top of counters. I assigned and labeled zones in my fridge for certain categories of things, so I don't have to make choices about where to put things away. A labeled and contained place for everything so you don't have to make decisions and when things don't get put away the first time it makes it easier to tidy up when you do have a good day. I say this as if it were easy, but it's been a long journey and my meds are sometimes used off label to treat adhd, so I might be betting a boost there. Start by thinking of a single task you perform daily but very inefficiently or that you need to be doing but it doesn't get done. Then start by organizing the space and things needed to perform that task. Try to take away as many choices and decisions you can. Think about how to make it as easy as humanly possible. For me, once I started with the things I need to get myself to work, then little by little other parts of my apartment have come together. Good luck on your journey!
This is perfect timing! I am remodeling my bedroom and I was so lost. Thank you so much! I like how you show a number of different styles to exemplify. Classic, minimalist, industrial, which is really useful to be able to imagine an interesting space that is also coherent with the rest of the house.
I found a 60's table lamp at a thrift store & put it on my nightstand months ago. I love it so much it makes me happy every time I look at it. It's just gorgeous. But it's apparently one-of-a-kind. I'm looking for another lamp for my husband's nightstand to replace his old boring one. I'm hoping nightstand lamps that don't match will look ok.
My situation is similar and I can assure you, it is going to work. I have different 60s table lamps on each side. They work well together though, because there are similarities in Material and shape.
My uneven floors make my bed slide so I have a low antique dresser at the foot of my bed to anchor the bed. It works as a bench because I can sit on it and put my euro decorative pillows on it at night. It was necessary bit now I realize it's a decorative element as well. Thanks, Nick!
With the help of your videos I recognise what I love and what I don't, what is right to do and the things I should avoid etc. I learnt a lot from you Nick and now I will design my new apartment with the things I learnt from you 🤞🏼thanks so much for the great content ❤️❤️
I am totally going to look for a nice rug for my bedroom! I am never going to have more pillows on my bed than needed - maybe that's very european of me. But i do want my space to feel a bit more cozy!
!! About lighting…you’ve inspired me! I’m doing a full renovation on our home. I’m having different lighting installed. I’m thinking I will have “daylight” lighting in the main living areas, but then have very warm lighting on dimmers for late evening, to switch the mood to “sundown.” My mom sometimes has great difficulty with her circadian rhythm. I think this will help her, and also create that serenity I’m aiming for. And definitely I’ll take your tips about bedroom lighting. Thanks!
I´m obsessed with linen sheets. They´re expensive, so I´ve bought a set, like once a year. I have 3 sets and a mixed linen cotton one. They´re so beautiful that I rarely use a bedcover on top. Plus they get softer and lovelier with every wash/dry cycle. I mix them up with quality cotton fitted sheets and pillows and I love it. But I have a cupboard stuffed full of other sheets that are just sitting there, I need to do something about that...
As much as adding a rug on top of carpeting is a home decor faux paus (Did I even spell that right?), doing so was a huge improvement over the carpeting, which I promise myself to replace with the flooring that matches what's in the rest of the house.
Re pendant lights: You can also get pendant lights without having to affix it permanently and dealing with putting electrical in. There are pendant lights now that are plug and switch, and you can use a strong Command hook and affix it to the ceiling. All Command hooks have a weight limit so you need to find something within the limit, but they're surprisingly strong. I'd head they were great, but didn't really believe, but now I'm a believer! I currently have a wicker pendant light hanging from a Command hook, and it was super easy to install, I even used a second hook to direct the cord where I wanted it to go.
I downsized from a large house to a 2 bedroom apartment and I bought a bed with storage under the mattress, all you have to do is lift the mattress part up and that’s where I store bed linen and shoes and handbags - all hidden! Best Buy ever!I love your videos!
Hi Nick. It's 3.06 am in Melbourne Australia, I fell asleep early and woke up, checking out Instagram and your story came up. I absolutely am obsessed with my linen, I use a top sheet as well, the majority is white. Plus, I iron the top sheet every day when I make the bed!!!!! Crazy I know but it's lovely getting into a fresh bed every night, and not into wrinkled bedding. But the saddest thing is that I am on my own and the left side of my bed has never been slept in!!!! How sad😢😢😢
I love making my bed with 3 sheets like at a hotel. However I can't be bothered ironing so I think I should use a blanket instead of a sheet on top. I need to find a nice looking blanket.
I seriously appreciate how practical you are. I am not going to be able to remodel this place since I'm renting! I want a nice place tho. So many designers seem to cater to rich people with no limitations.
Hi Nick! I put a bookshelf behind my king-size bed. It holds (obviously) my books, lamp, diffuser, etc. I had to choose between a queen-size bed + nightstands or the direction I went. I’m so pleased with my solution.
Ooo. I just found this fantastic bedroom that has floor to ceiling bookshelves behind their bed, as well. Here is the link: ruclips.net/video/VCAFxHMWVCs/видео.html
The Bed in a Bag is great (I need Queen) I do replace the 200TC fitted sheet with an 600+TC 100% cotton (non-microfiber) The Bed in the bag is great for start on a budget.
If you do a follow up to this video I would really appreciate if you touched on how to style a bed with two separate duvets. I live in Germany and sharing one isn't common here and I can't imagine not having my own. My husband and I would be fighting over it every night.
With heat and air we sleep under 1 perfect weight blanket it's not attractive, could you have your 2 duvets then a 3rd big one or quilt on top just for looks? Like the decorative pillows off it goes fir sleeping.
We use different bedding. Mine is a king size duvet on our queen sized bed, that we use to make the bed, I pull it across to my side at night. My partner uses a queen one that gets folded up in the morning and sstored during the day.
So the dog is in the bed and that's all I needed to know. Any man that cuddles w his dog is alright with me. No wonder I subscribed to your channel longtime 🤣😭 sincerely, a dog owner who cuddles w their dogs 🙏✨
I love neutrals a layered bed, adding in textural components with soft throws and accent pillows. A side note, I love your sense of humor and fab diplomacy, your videos are wonderful. Thanks.
Hi Nick! I just discovered your channel and have been binging it all day - it’s currently 5am and I’m still watching 😂. Anyway, I’m wondering if you might consider doing a video on working with knee walls/sloped walls and ceilings. I live in an 80 year old Cape Cod and the upstairs is bananas. I really want it to be my master bedroom but these walls are so frustrating. They begin sloping at ~24” from the floor, which is much lower than I usually see when I try to search for inspiration. Thanks in advance!
I used to buy new sheets in January every year. Start the New Year off NEW! My husband said why not!! So after Christmas we went sheet shopping and new pillows!! It was fun!!
@@Nick_Lewis I sometimes sleep on 30 year old sheets! Before you die of shock ... they were in storage for my entire marriage, as my spouse hated the pattern (big zebra print). They are a top quality heavy percale that washes really well and looks only slightly worn. Most of the year I prefer flannel, so they only get used for a month or so every year. They may be ancient by the calendar, but not by the amount of use. Speaking of flannel sheets ... I'm addicted to flannel sheets. Is there any way to make those look more upscale?
There are a lot of older sets that are superior quality and can last a lifetime if they are well cared for. I do have some that are almost 20 years old and still in great condition.
After attic renovation, we ended up with a very large, high ceilings bedroom, so we even had a space for reading corner with coffee table. That was before Corona. Now our bedroom has three office desks 😭😭😭 (each for partner and I, and one for my kid's school (so we keep an eye she doesn't play games during lessons). I can't wait to get back to normal and to have my reading nook in our bedroom again. 🙄
How fortuitous. I literally just ordered a pair of nightstands. I love your videos. I just moved to a new flat and I'm excited to use your videos for ideas to decorate my space.
I just moved into an old apartment where the bedroom has a really weird layout - one wall is at 45 degrees and the only two light fixtures are in random places on the walls (and I've no budget to move them). I've found in this case that going with extreme symmetry in the areas I CAN control (bed, nightstands etc.) has brought some regularity to those irregular elements, and they now look intentional rather than nonsensical.
Speaking of warm light - the dawn and dust simulator alarm clocks are great. Besides being a good alarm clock, they can simulate a warm, mini-15 minute sunset right before sleeping.
Definitely taking notes. I've only found your channel recently but I'm loving every second of every video and I love your personality! Thanks for the great content. Some of us (me) absolutely need this!
I use bamboo sheets in winter and pure cotton in summer, white so they can be bleached when they start to yellow, and they look gorgeous. Good quality sheets will last years if taken care of.
I have to be able to see in my room, especially when I'm cleaning. So, warm light for table lamps and cool light for overhead fixture. Cool light with a dimmer is good, too.
In regards to a large mirror in the bedroom, I'd say take a moment to consider if you want one standing and leaning back or one that you can keep straight. I mention this only because having a mirror that leans back will ever so slightly exaggerate your lower half. Not a big deal but when you're trying on a nice new outfit it does make a little bit of difference. (and I only say this from personal experience)
It seems like almost everyone puts a huge rug under the bed leaving it peeking out at the sides. I guess that works better with neutrals. I usually prefer a bolder color palette and like to put smaller rugs around the bed, usually one on each side. That way, I can appreciate the rugs in their entirety and they make more of a statement.
And under the bed is where the dust balls settle. I don’t get it. I’d like a large rug but I think it would just get dirty where walked on and most of it would be under the bed.
My bedroom is so narrow that with my queen size platform bed, the only way to have a night stand of sorts (for now) was to add a floating shelf slightly above the headboard and put two matching lamps on it. The design on the dark grey accent wall behind the headboard that the lamp lights throw on the wall above the bed is magnificent, and goes amazingly with my subdued checked design scheme for the room. A surprise treat! The shelf doesn't provide the best functionality, but with remote outlets for the lamps, at least the lighting element is a convenience, and provides a layering of lighting options along with the dimmable overhead light for the room. The final piece of the puzzle will be having 4" wide × 3 ft long custom night stands built in on both sides of the bed for stowing cell phones, cups of water and/or reading glasses. (Yes, unfortunately, 4" is not a typo!) I just have to find the right contractor.
the bedroom I have is is almost square....I have my bed at a 45deg. angle with the headboard horizontal facing the corner.....foot of the bed faces the door. There is only 2 windows & each one face the sides of the bed....works out great!! Wall to wall carpeting matches the color of the wall. Th ewindows are small so I hung the curtins ( same color of wall) from ceiling height to floor.
And to that extent, a “bachelorette” apartment even. I recently moved into a gorgeous studio that is genuinely not lacking in structural style and flow but I’m flabbergasted as to what to do in the entryway/dining area/foyer/entertainment area. The bedroom and closet areas are separated beautifully and the studio flows in an open concept kind of way. My style is what I call English Colonial meets minimalist glamour where nature, wood, glass and crystal make fair play as they remind me of growing up in a tropical rainforest in the Caribbean. My place how I’ve decorated it thus far looks gorgeous, relaxing and like a beautiful jungle escape. But I’m genuinely lost as to how to coordinate my entertainment area as I don’t have a couch or can’t have one. Granted, I only have a very small family to visit me and equally small circle of friends, so I don’t really have the need for a big space. But still, I want the feeling of a cozy entertainment area meets dining room but still read slick and slightly feminine and futuristic. I have great design instinct but I am lost as to how to frame the dining area and how to search for a table and still not have the area read overfilled. Also how to maximize of create storage in a studio please. Thank you for your videos Nick!
*Add a plant. The greenery helps to calm and to nurture. Plus the oxygen and air cleaning properties of most houseplants. Something like a ZZ is bombproof and beautiful
If you do a follow up to this, it would be great to get some ideas for how (if possible, haha!) to style a bedroom with only one nightstand. For one, I'm single and always sleep on the same side of the bed, and for another, the nightstand I've got my heart set on is from a vintage set that I'll be lucky to be able to justify spending the money on ONE of someday, let alone two (the best price I can find anywhere is $1100!).
How about one night stand and on the other side a plant friend on a nice pot, maybe even a tall plant stand? I’ve also seen night stand on one side and desk on the other?
About ten years ago I invested in luxury bed sheets and they are still wonderful today!! It's worth the money, believe me! How about layering rugs in the bedroom? I cannot find a large rug I like but do have a 5x7 cotton one. My floors are tile so I need something under the bed. Now, I might have to "invest" in a nice chunky throw and another rug.
Hi Nick, how do I choose the right night stand for my bed frame (oak colour). If I wanted to avoid going matcha-matchy what rules do I need to follow to ensure they all go together and don’t look out of place? Thanks!
I use programmable blue tooth lighting that goes from cool to warm through the day, gives me a great wake up int he AM, but shifts to warm colors at night time
I appreciate your tips. All are practical and thought provoking. My taste leans to a traditional style. Think Mario Buatta simplified, transitioned to Barclay Butera calm of the Hampton Showhouse. Crazy combination, but each are comfortable, with texture, pattern, and a calm chic character. Struggling to achieve in in my small home on my small budget. Your tips and ideas are always helpful!
Hi Nick! As usual, entertaining and Ahah! moments. Im a firm believer of letting chi float around your bed, hence nothing under. Great idea, but I'll feel like im breaking a fengshui rule😬
I literally cheered when I saw the sponsor (first time I've ever done that 😒) because I'm snuggled up under my duvet with a Brooklinen cover, on top of my Brooklinen fitted sheet. Its the only one I haven't torn a hole in. I'm a bedding freak and I do like their products. As far as designing the bed goes, I think its good to have some really great feeling sheets, because its important to look forward to sleeping. Play around with different materials and weaves (I found I love cotton sateen), but avoid polyester and anything "microfiber," which is always polyester. Read the materials carefully, because deception is extremely common; good cotton sheets are not dirt cheap, so if it seems too good, you should read everything carefully to understand exactly what the product is. Thread count is a lie, anything above 400 or so is probably inflated to seem deceptively good quality; its not that they're bad per se, but certainly overpriced. I think 400 TC is just fine, and if you pick sateen it feels incredibly luxurious. I think Brooklinen is a pretty good example of a bedding brand that is good quality, honestly presented, and not deceptive, if a little expensive. Their percale sheets are 270 TC, and that is just great! It only seems low if you spend a lot of time looking at dishonestly marketed bedding. Target's higher end cotton sheets are actually a really fabulous affordable option, though their fitted sheet was one I did rip.
Good Evening Nick, Since I have discovered you via Utube, thank them, you have one more follower! Caveat to all the viewing of your videos, and I have watch 3 in two days. Love, love, and completely Adore all your design common sense. We are so on the same wave length! That is all I wanted to tell you. Please know there are many decorators and I know and have met some. But for my 2 cents worth You Babe have got it going on! Keep up the good work. I am enjoying your opinions they jive with mine, and I am a very strong and opinionated individual. So about design or anything that sort of alignment and agreement --- just never happens. Applause, Applause!
I only use 100% cotton sheets because I like the feel. I used to only do white but I think think they just look cold. Now I use colors (not red) and I think they make they make my bed look cozier. All those extra pillows look immature. I finally have a large bedroom so I got some substantial nightstands. However I'm a clutter-bug so they always have way too much junk on it.

One thing I will say to keep in mind about task lighting:
If you're one of those people that like to rearrange your room every once and while, wall sconces and hanging pendant lights won't work well with that....once that lights are hung/attached to the wall, without a lot of work moving/refinishing walls, they're not moving. Which means the bed stays wherever those lights are.
Just something to keep in mind!!
I have hemp sheets. They feel silky but are incredibly durable. They keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.
Eucalyptus? That’s interesting, never heard of it. How does it feel?
@@Keepinitreal55 it's a sub-type of tencel/lyocell, which can be made from a variety of fibres. Eucalyptus is apparently more sustainable throughout production. It's closest to sateen cotton in feel, but stronger that sateen or percale. It wicks moisture and thermoregulates well (they're cooler than cotton), and wrinkles similarly to sateen.
@@4mpersan any recommendation for a comfortable and affordable bed sheet set?
@@Keepinitreal55 those are mutually exclusive most of the time. I would try to get a 300tc cotton set made of good quality cotton, and wash the crap out of it a few times to break it in. They get significantly softer than you would think.
Why are the silk hard to care for? Please and thank you!
It's so satisfying when you watch a video on the "DOs" of decorating and you've already checked off every box.
Glad you enjoyed!
Here in rural France we get beautiful mid C20 linen sheets for a dollar or two in charity shops. Often you can find unused wedding sets kept for best and still in their packaging. Warm or cold outside, there's nothing like sleeping in linen. Sometimes old sheets are the best!
I love how you focus on function, not just looks
so true about the warm lighting in the bedroom. i installed (or rather had the husband install) a dimmer in the bathroom for the main overhead light. i found that doing my nighttime routine in a very brightly lit bathroom just woke me right up. now i do my routine in a dimly lit bathroom then go into my dimly lit bedroom. i fall right asleep!
great post!
Hi! Could you make a video about maximalism as a decorative style and how to do it successfully? Thanks!
It could kill him though 😅, House Beautiful has been showing lots but it was super wild and colorful. Even I was unsure of that much wildness!!
Same here.
Yeah I have a way of doing that!
Saaaaame! All these "design this room" Nick's been doing has come at the perfect time as I just moved into a place alone for the first time where I have full control over how I design my space (or as much control as a renter can have :/ )
You explain things so well. I recently put a wool blanket across my bed to add color and texture. It made a HUGE difference. Thank you!
I appreciate all these videos about specific rooms. I just bought a single family home and need this!
I have an asymmetrical bedroom... the baby's cot is on my side
Fenshui and Vasthu says not to have two completely identical thing in master bedroom as it could invite infidelity! So a little imbalance or asymmetry is good for a happy family 😌
@@asayy2450 LOL ;0).
@@sams6591 Cool! I did not know this. I have a queen bed with 2 identical nightstands, i.e. very symmetrical, which I thought was following feng shui rules? And lately I have been yearning to get rid of one! Thoughts?
@@LittleMissHoop I’ve never followed fend shui - probably gone completely against it - and I’ve had great nights sleeps. 😊
I love how you just get straight into your video content! Love your stuff!
But, please, use the king top sheet and covers. Feels SO much more luxurious. And if they touch the floor, you’ll feel like royalty.
Very unusual to do that! Great it worked for you.
@@Person-mh6xq It wasn't a difficult decision for me- the really small room was just one big bed. Hubby OTOH loved the huge king bed. He took some convincing but once he saw how nice it looked with the smaller bed and the chair we now have room for, he was sold. :-)
@@leeeakin936 We don't use top sheets and haven't since we've lived in Europe but we did keep the king sized comforter.
@@DogsDogsAndMoreDogs I like the wash ability of sheets, and actually always triple sheet. Cleaner and easier.
Also on point 4, I use cocktail side tables. They are elegant and petite. Any more storage can go into a basket under the table.
Its crazy luxurious mental sheets out of the blue line because I have blue walls. So they fit all in landscape .
Great suggestion, thanks!
@@mgu513 how is the ADHD journey going? I am just starting to organize things for my (undiagnosed) ADHD. It has already been a game changer.
I have managed this scenario successfully and I think that the key is that both lamps need to be the same height at the top.
maybe try a floor lamp for your husband instead? you may be able to find a beautiful 60s floor lamp !
My uneven floors make my bed slide so I have a low antique dresser at the foot of my bed to anchor the bed. It works as a bench because I can sit on it and put my euro decorative pillows on it at night. It was necessary bit now I realize it's a decorative element as well. Thanks, Nick!
Now you’ve got some extra seating!
With the help of your videos I recognise what I love and what I don't, what is right to do and the things I should avoid etc. I learnt a lot from you Nick and now I will design my new apartment with the things I learnt from you 🤞🏼thanks so much for the great content ❤️❤️

Thanks!
Yes! Yes, yes! Warm lighting! It is everything. 🤗
Easily one of my fav Nick Lewis videos. Would you do one of these for living room as well?
I´m obsessed with linen sheets. They´re expensive, so I´ve bought a set, like once a year. I have 3 sets and a mixed linen cotton one. They´re so beautiful that I rarely use a bedcover on top. Plus they get softer and lovelier with every wash/dry cycle. I mix them up with quality cotton fitted sheets and pillows and I love it. But I have a cupboard stuffed full of other sheets that are just sitting there, I need to do something about that...
Donate them to a local Veterinary hospital. They always need these items, as well as towels & blankets.
As much as adding a rug on top of carpeting is a home decor faux paus (Did I even spell that right?), doing so was a huge improvement over the carpeting, which I promise myself to replace with the flooring that matches what's in the rest of the house.
I’m in UK. Your bed is about the size of my bedroom. !! But the overall ideas transcend over the pond , so thank you.
How sad😢😢😢
Can you please come over around 10am everyday to make my bed?! Ive always wanted ironed sheets, and well im just lazy AF for that! ✌😆
@Emily June Sure, if you pay the airfare I'm happy to help.
I love making my bed with 3 sheets like at a hotel. However I can't be bothered ironing so I think I should use a blanket instead of a sheet on top. I need to find a nice looking blanket.
@@riihab312 of course I will 🥰

I love my storage ottoman where my purses are stored. And my full length wall mirror definitely makes the room look bigger.

One of your best videos Nick. I did all sorts of rearranging during this video and my spaces look better!!!
I used to buy new sheets in January every year. Start the New Year off NEW! My husband said why not!! So after Christmas we went sheet shopping and new pillows!! It was fun!!
I don’t think people who sleep in sheets that needed to go 10 years ago, would be interested in watching your videos lol
Sometimes we all need a reminder! I mean 10 years is a long time… haha
@@lizcademy4809 I agree.
Quality linen will last for decades. People used to make things that last. Now with materialism, things barely last a couple years let alone 10.
Ooh, the plant at the end of the bed is wonderful!! Great idea for my next bedroom!
Great idea for a little nightstand, a shelf from Ikea.
And the mirror!!! Yes. Thank you Nick
@@louannhuber2651: I agree.
I can't stop bingeing your videos. Didn't even realize this one just came out. They're just playin.....one. after. Another. And I love it😉
My bedroom is so narrow that with my queen size platform bed, the only way to have a night stand of sorts (for now) was to add a floating shelf slightly above the headboard and put two matching lamps on it.
This is exactly the video I was looking for!!! I'm just finishing up my room and need this advice to wrap it up!! Thank you!!!
Nick! Can you please do a how to decorate a studio/bachelor apartment?
I agree about putting rug in bedroom as for myself I think,it dresses it up.
Who wants matchy matchy!? On purpose we have different night stands.
maybe, put the one nightstand on one side, floor lamp on the other (for reading, etc?). Or a complementary styled bookshelf, ottoman, etc?
About ten years ago I invested in luxury bed sheets and they are still wonderful today!! It's worth the money, believe me!
How about layering rugs in the bedroom? I cannot find a large rug I like but do have a 5x7 cotton one. My floors are tile so I need something under the bed.
Now, I might have to "invest" in a nice chunky throw and another rug.
They are totally worth the splurge!
Hi Nick, how do I choose the right night stand for my bed frame (oak colour). If I wanted to avoid going matcha-matchy what rules do I need to follow to ensure they all go together and don’t look out of place? Thanks!
Great question!! 🤔 I am wondering this as well.
I have my grandma’s lowboy for my dressing table and long mirror for my small bedroom. Just perfect.
I do overhead lights as daylight and lamps warm light. That way my bedroom has both options for different times of day
Yes, just love my new bed linens. They are cozycompfy
I like the idea of different bedside tables to add interest and pizazz ⚡️
I use programmable blue tooth lighting that goes from cool to warm through the day, gives me a great wake up int he AM, but shifts to warm colors at night time
To add a little style to my pillows I use two pillow cases on each pillow of different or similar colors. It’s a small thing but looks rich.
Great video Nick! Would love to hear you about all things dining room!

I appreciate that this guy's videos are so well organized.
I always wanted some practical and good duvet suggestions for couple who doesn’t like to share their comforter
Any cozy 2 part ones pls
Love the photo example of Too many pillows on the bed, hahaha. Liked your guidance on balance versus symmetrical.
Good Evening Nick,
Since I have discovered you via Utube, thank them, you have one more follower!
Caveat to all the viewing of your videos, and I have watch 3 in two days. Love, love,
and completely Adore all your design common sense. We are so on the same wave length!
That is all I wanted to tell you. Please know there are many decorators and I know and have met
some. But for my 2 cents worth You Babe have got it going on! Keep up the good work. I am
enjoying your opinions they jive with mine, and I am a very strong and opinionated individual.
